TIME TO LAY DOWN SOME FUCKING FACTS.

1. WILLARD NETWORKS IS NOT A SERIOUS RP SERVER. IT IS DARKRP MASQUERADING AS SOMETHING SERIOUS.
2. MANAGEMENT OF THE COMMUNITY IS APATHETIC AT BEST. THEY DO NOT TAKE ON ANY FEEDBACK WITHOUT EXTRAORDINARY EXTERNAL PRESSURE.
3. GMOD IS A BAD MEDIUM FOR GOOD RP, AND MOST OF THE PLAYERS HERE DO NOT KNOW HOW TO RP PROPERLY.
4. THE MAP IS NOT THE PROBLEM. THE VENDORS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM.

THE PROBLEM IS YOU.

Clickbaity schizo introduction over, hello. For those unaware, I'm Sachi, ex-mentor, ex-admin, and all around cool person (do not fact check this.)
As some of you might be aware from there being one of these types of posts every few weeks, there is a lot of discontent around the state of the server. This will be yet another addition to that, except with some actually non-shit opinions for you all to consider.

So, with all of us on the same page on what this is, let's begin with the obvious question: "Why server bad????"
Well, with an obvious question, comes a few more not-so-obvious questions.
"What do you mean by bad?"
"When exploring why, do we look at absolute root causes, or simply what we can affect?"
"To what standard are we holding the server in order to call it 'bad'?"

By tackling these not-so-obvious questions, the answer to the obvious question can become clear, so here are the answers.

What do you mean by bad?
I mean that the server is boring/not worth the time requirement/not up to standard.
It's common sentiment that the server currently appears to have little going for it in terms of engagement. On the rebel side, the civilian side, and the combine side
, all, there are plentiful issues that players wish to see addressed, and no small number of ways how players want them addressed. More oppression, less oppression, more loot, less loot, more faction freedom, more faction oversight, so on and so forth ad infinitum.

When exploring why, do we look at absolute root causes, or simply what we can affect?
Trick question! Look at both! Identifying the absolute root causes helps to differentiate which that simply is, and which that can be changed. And looking at what we can affect allows us to see to what degree change can be made. So look at both, dumbass.

To what standard are we holding the server in order to call it 'bad'?
The exact standard the server seeks to hold itself to. Specifically, what it advertises in the "New arrivals" section of the forums. After all, that's likely what a prospective player is going to draw their expectations from the most. If the community can't even do that, then what really is the point of trying?

So, with those answered, let's answer the big one: Why server bad?

The community. You included.

That's really the simplest, shortest answer for it. And yes, you are included in this, doesn't matter if you're reading this as a developer, as an admin, as a mentor, regular player, CT, faction lead, rebel, combine, citizen, God-King Atle himself, whatever. You are included in this, as I am too.
Now, to fully explain this reasoning, we have to step back again. What is it about the community that makes the server bad? For starters, let's look at what would make it good, according to the criteria I said above.

"Discover the fresh Half-Life 2 Roleplay (HL2RP) server, featuring an overhauled combat system, gameplay and UI, forming a unique experience." - Okay, so we want the experience to be unique. That's certainly doable, and a good server would have this nailed. I will admit, WN is certainly unique.

"Our unique skill system offers a brand-new look on player progression unlike anything seen before. Freedom is key, and we allow you to play the character you truly want to be." - So, a good server will prioritize player freedom, and ensure people can play the characters they want to play? Alongside a unique look at progression, of course.

"Indulge in our unique lore, fun features and interesting mechanics and bring your character to life in our HL2RP!" - Unique, fun, interesting. All hallmarks of a good server, naturally.

From this, we can get a basic image of what a good WN is supposed to look like. A unique departure from the norm of HL2RP servers, with mechanics designed to facilitate player freedom and engagement, and an evidently engaged team dedicated to bring this about.
Right...

Now, let's look at the WN we have, from the perspective of me, the only objectively correct person in the community.
Majority apathetic/inactive staff and management, who are more concerned about appearances then proper moderation and development of the community? Check.
Confusing, buggy systems, with dev work dedicated to creating more of these systems instead of refining the ones we have? Check.
Poor foundational design leading to a majority of players having big gear-fear, refusing to engage in any conflict, and in turn killing any engaging non-staff created events? Check.
Extreme grind for any kind of progression towards major factions, gating higher positions behind braindead number go up instead of quality of RP? Check.
Lax quality control, allowing for downright minging to be not only allowed, but captured and posted to discord in a "lol so funi" moment? Check.

Let's be honest here, it's quite evident to see just how far WN Reality has deviated from WN Expectation. It's no surprise people aren't particularly enjoying it, but how does the blame fall to the community for these issues?

For one, the quality of RP cannot be dictated from down-on-high. It is your responsibility, as it is for everyone, to quality control themselves on the server. If your average /me goes like "/me I would shoot at the combine office because he hates him." Then the fault of the server's quality being low lies with you and everyone who plays like you, and it is then your responsibility to fix that. Don't think because you're better then the hyperbolic example I placed before that you are not beholden to this, either. Everybody can improve their writing. Even professional authors can improve, and it's by improving yourself that you do your part to improve the server.

For two, every player must create as much as they consume. RP is a non-zero-sum game, meaning the more people that create RP, the better it will be for everyone. This doesn't require you to be 100% on the ball at all times, but if all you do is AFK for workshifts and the ration timer, and complain there is nothing to do, then the blame lies with you and everyone who plays like you. Of course, if you are limited in the stories you can tell, then there may be other issues, but if you simply refuse to be proactive about RP and just sit around with your thumb in your ass waiting for people to interact with your character who is "totally really deep and cool once you get to know them", then you are the problem.

For three, it is every single member of the community's responsibility to be proactive and passionate about improving the server. Be the change you want to see. I feel I have some authority in posting this thread as I actually have tried to work for change, both in a public capacity (running events, expeditions, and creating RP on non-event chars) and a private one (working with staff behind the scenes, discussing better reform, etc). To those of you who complain, and expect others to fix the issues in your stead, you and everyone like you is part of the problem. Stop contributing to the "discussion", start contributing to the solution. Create RP, facilitate others, be a god damn team player.

Naturally, there are other issues that stem out of the general "Why server bad?" question, that can be addressed independently of the larger whole. To compartmentalize the issues discovered in answering the big question, and to work through those flaws one at a time presents itself as the optimal method to get it done without getting bogged down. So what, pray tell, are the most pressing issues that need to be fixed in the community? Well, whilst the matter of prioritization is partially subjective, I feel these few are the ones that should be addressed foremost:

Management Apathy
Simple enough, really. Purge inactive staff. Purge inactive management. Get people on the helm who want to be there. It's almost shocking how the most elementary part of a good management team is missed. Seriously, get rid of the dead weight, or the active people will leave (quite a few already have).

Quality Control
Death to shitters. I am being completely unironic. If you are mingey, if your /me's are god awful, if you purposefully shitpost IC and OOC for "wacky discord screenshot moments", you should be removed from the community.
This is an effort on both the staff and player's part. If something is fucking stupid, but amusing, don't support it. Players, don't screencap the wacky moments, because it reinforces and encourages that type of play. Staff, ensure it is moderated quickly. Seriously guys, if you just committed to playing better, and encouraging others to play better, things would improve.

Foundational Design Reforms, IC and OOC.
There are many inefficiencies within the server. Factions need reworking again and again, the atmosphere is too dark, then too light, then too dark again. WN tries to strike a balance between every single players wants and wishes all at once without any idea of what it should be. Fucking knock it off. Pick a vision, pick an idea, one that works, and fucking stick to it. Willard Networks has no identity aside from constantly bouncing all over the place trying to cater to everyone all at once, and such an effort is doomed to failure. Learn to say "no".
This isn't just a management thing, either. Players need to learn to quit fucking whining any time their character gets a toe stub. We do not need rebel complaint thread no. 5102 because you were touching dicks with all your rebel gear when a sweep happened. We do not need combine complaint thread when a meticulously planned ambush goes off without a hitch. Grow the fuck up. It's all make-believe anyway.

In Conclusion
There, the only good complaint thread ever made is done. You are welcome. If you have criticism, stick it up your ass. (Or down below in the reply box where criticism goes.)
No, I do not actually expect shit to change, the issues here are very institutionalized and it would take a serious shake-up of the existing management team to provoke such a change.
Remember, stay in drugs and don't do school or some shit, I'm gonna go play FFXIV.

PS. NW on top /)

Can't wait for this post to get locked after the comments get turned into a warzone.

Anyway, now for a semi-serious response, or an attempt of it.

Yes. WN definitely sucks.
Can we make it better with complaint posts? Nope.
Can we make it better with aggressive complaint posts? Nope.
Can we make it better, period? Nope.

No, I do not actually expect shit to change, the issues here are very institutionalized and it would take a serious shake-up of the existing management team to provoke such a change.

So one can only ask, why bother? Why waste energy on typing a big "Willard is shit" post if nothing will change? I mean, why would one bother?

It's all make-believe anyway.

It's a HL2RP server. Sure, it might be one that you like, or liked, at some point, but what is it that makes you want it to actually improve? Is it the experience, the community, or some wild case of Stockholm Syndrome?

It's a genuine question I want you to ask yourself. What is it that keeps you here? Reading discussions posts that deep down, you know will parrot the same things you already knew, just in a different way? And, whatever your answer is, should you even be taking all of these things into account?

After all, this has been a dead horse beaten over, and over, and over. Same overused topics. Same overused images. Same overused jokes. It's almost comically depressing how unchanging everything has been.

But whatever, I went off topic. "RP Bad", "Staff Bad", "Rebel/Combine Bad".

Just have fun. Gmod was built with that as its purpose.
So if you aren't having fun, why are you bothering?

So one can only ask, why bother?
Because like most people, I'm not a being of pure logic, I'm not here to 100% empirically analyse every single facet of the server down to it's bare minimum and identify the greatest path forwards. I'm here because at one point, I had fun with the server. It was fun, and now it is not. And if things can get worse, then they can certainly get better, and I want to be a part of it getting better.
Can we make it better, period? Nope.
I disagree with this statement whole-heartedly. We can make it better. That's the point of this thread, to try and remind people that it can be better, if you only tried.
I do not expect things to get better, because previous attempts to improve things have left a sour taste in my mouth. I do, however, still hope that my expectations will be shattered. I guess this post was an expression of that same hope, even if I worded it angrily.
What is it that keeps you here?
As for this? I'm staying partially out of hope things can improve, and partially because I have made a good many friends from this community. Despite what you might think, I don't hate WN. I hate how it is right now, and that is born from a desire to see it improved.
Because this community, at it's core, is fucking brilliant. It's full of talented, inspirational people who are passionate about their hobby. I don't wanna see that go.

anyway positivity over uh uhm uh grr hate willard grr

WN's unique brand of problems revolve specifically around being utterly unwilling to change the setting (back to C24 lads!) or allow genuine free-form roleplay to be fostered outside of events (corruption is mechanically very difficult to pull off, etc). Most of the best roleplayers that could have done this have long-since gone elsewhere, which is why WN continues to stagger from event to event, hoping something draws interest in it again.

I've commented this before but its almost comical how it takes almost no effort to get something approved if it involves lengthy dev work but things that could easily be solved through roleplay adjustments get shut down or argued against. The writing was on the wall for these things well over a year ago now and complaints about the growing trend were met with mockery because the community was high on its own post-launch success at that point.

But it was never going to last, and it hasn't.

At least some of your post though, @Sachimii, is unfortunately something you see in every community and very little can change it. But in combination with what I said above it makes WN suffer particularly hard.

I disagree with this statement whole-heartedly. We can make it better. That's the point of this thread, to try and remind people that it can be better, if you only tried.
I really doubt it can. It's easier to sit on the same place instead of getting up and walking, only to risk falling down a metaphorical flight of stairs. It's pretty much what I'm doing right now, and it isn't exactly lost on me.

At the end of the day, we aren't really a hivemind. Some people will try their best, other will do their worse. In its current state, I sincerely doubt WN can be perfected unless it's a clear wipe. There's too many issues, too many different wants, too many opinions - all of which basically try to rip the server apart. This is obviously Doomer talk, but this is what I've been seeing from experience. Not to mention all of the issues that have already been brought up ages ago have yet been even addressed.

As for doing better roleplay. Don't. I'm being genuine here. You will waste your own energy doing something that most won't appreciate.
Do it only if it brings you some sort of euphoria. If you do it for others, you'll get burn out, be it with time, or when your character gets PK'd.

It's better not to lose your sanity playing a quirky HL2RP server.

I lmao (laugh my arse off) at every bitter willard rper desperately wanting their breadline simulator to be less bad while they complain about (clearly are jealous of) OSF.
I simply go on the server when I feel like it and run cool army man events and have fun with the faction. I won Willards.

This is why you haven't gotten into CP.

You just wasted time, Willard is dying and nothing can stop this. It's an infinite cycle, there's a popular server and then it disappears, passing the torch to another server that will then die and pass the torch to yet another one. OSF on top

This is why you haven't gotten into CP.
I know, I don't hate rp enough to want to join them anymore.

this is literally only going to be locked within 2 days
and then nothing happens
cycle repeats

Alright,
First of all I would like to thank you for your criticism! Usually threads like this just look like schizo posting but I can surely agree in some degree with some of the points. There are a few things that stand out and I want to address:

2. MANAGEMENT OF THE COMMUNITY IS APATHETIC AT BEST. THEY DO NOT TAKE ON ANY FEEDBACK WITHOUT EXTRAORDINARY EXTERNAL PRESSURE.
Do you have any prove of this? What made you take this decision as I am willing to work on such a statement.

3. GMOD IS A BAD MEDIUM FOR GOOD RP, AND MOST OF THE PLAYERS HERE DO NOT KNOW HOW TO RP PROPERLY.
Agreed. But why play yourself? It takes time to get the quality we want; you knew that as you were part of the staff team (actively) helping players.
THE PROBLEM IS YOU.
Why point fingers? You cant just blame everyone else for your own bad experience. Thats quite the dick move.

I mean that the server is boring/not worth the time requirement/not up to standard.
I thought your thread was objective? Not everyone thinks this.

Trick question! Look at both! Identifying the absolute root causes helps to differentiate which that simply is, and which that can be changed. And looking at what we can affect allows us to see to what degree change can be made. So look at both, dumbass.
Agreed! I, myself, always look at all the causes. Calling me and others a dumbass is not necessary.

the perspective of me, the only objectively correct person in the community.
Subjective.

Majority apathetic/inactive staff and management, who are more concerned about appearances then proper moderation and development of the community? Check.
Proof? I am willing to discuss this as I, in fact, would like to improve the staff team as the newly assigned Head of Staff.

Confusing, buggy systems, with dev work dedicated to creating more of these systems instead of refining the ones we have? Check.
Not true. @Aspect™ can confirm this.

Extreme grind for any kind of progression towards major factions, gating higher positions behind braindead number go up instead of quality of RP? Check.
People always want to reach for the highest possible. Its in our nature. We want to be the best, lead the others and be the utmost alpha of them all! Of course people grind for that, not only in Gmod. People do have to watch their quality, agreed.

Lax quality control, allowing for downright minging to be not only allowed, but captured and posted to discord in a "lol so funi" moment? Check.
True. It sometimes is annoying. How much did you moderate this?

you and everyone who plays like you,
Again, pointing fingers. Rude.

but if all you do is AFK for workshifts and the ration timer, and complain there is nothing to do, then the blame lies with you and everyone who plays like you.
These kind of people barely complain as they know they *can't* complain. Again pointing at everyone else instead of a few individuals or looking at yourself first.

(working with staff behind the scenes, discussing better reform, etc).
Then why did you leave? If you want to improve the server, makena difference.

Management Apathy
Simple enough, really. Purge inactive staff. Purge inactive management. Get people on the helm who want to be there. It's almost shocking how the most elementary part of a good management team is missed. Seriously, get rid of the dead weight, or the active people will leave (quite a few already have).
I agree. Feel free to contact me with a few names you have in mind as a former staff member. On the other side, its December as we speak so people are busy and dont put Gmod on the first place. It is and will remain a voluntary task.

the only good complaint thread ever made is done.
Subjective.

stick it up your ass.
Rude?

No, I do not actually expect shit to change,
Then why make this post in the first place?

management team to provoke such a change.
Oh? I am more than willing to change things for the better. Matter of fact, the whole team does! We are having a meeting about it tonight! You should have stayed a little longer!

TL:DR; i agree and disagree with a few things. Why did you play in the first place and why complain if you dont want to see a change?

Thanks!

Do you have any prove of this?
Personal experience as an admin, alongside witnessing how many concerns have been brushed aside/put on hold/outright ignored in the past. As for screenshots or something if you're looking for that, I can't provide.

Agreed. But why play yourself?
When I first joined WN, I was actually pretty ignorant of this fact. It's been a more recent realisation after taking into consideration what I'm looking for in terms of RP, and the average audience that Gmod attracts.

Why point fingers? You cant just blame everyone else for your own bad experience.
Part of the schizo clickbait intro, so it was pretty hyperbolic. My expansion on it further in the post actually clarifies how I am not exempt from this issue.

I thought your thread was objective? Not everyone thinks this.
Sure, not everyone, but if you check the links that I post in the very same section (aka the next line) to reference each claim I make. It's hard to be 100% objective when the main issue centres around negative opinion, the best I can do is find supporting activity for my claims. Which I did.

Calling me and others a dumbass is not necessary.
True, but I found it funny.

Subjective.
I am always objective, never hyperbolic, and certainly did not shitpost even once during this complaint thread.

Proof? I am willing to discuss this as I, in fact, would like to improve the staff team as the newly assigned Head of Staff.
Recent staff resignations/activity have ensured active, passionate staff members, such as Phoenix, Sif, Leudo, Myself, and others are/were burnt out to the point of apathy. The proof you ask for can be seen in the logs of the staff roster. Or just- you know, ask your staff team how they're doing. That's also an option. In fact, your ignorance to the issue is evidence in itself. I understand you want to improve things but if you are unable to gather the basic facts on the health of the team you are designated to manage, well. I feel it speaks volumes.

Not true. @@Aspect™ can confirm this.
The systems I was referring to were things like TBC, which is infamously buggy and required certain NPCs never be touched due to their complete incompatibility with the system. A secondary example would be the skills system, where if you unload your character, you *lose* skillpoints. This (as far as I am aware) has yet to be fixed, and is a common trap for newer players.

How much did you moderate this?
As much as I was able to without causing shit. Changing descriptions, telling people to cut the shit in /looc, there's only so much you can do before you realise the atmosphere of the team you're working with doesn't fit with what you want.

Again, pointing fingers. Rude.
Civility is good for getting things sorted without drama, but some rudeness is much more effective in getting your point looked at.

These kind of people barely complain
False, have you played the server at all? The people that complain most of the server being boring are the ones I find who contribute to RP least, at the best they will do some reactive /me's on the periphery of a situation, at worst they are practically in spectator mode.

Then why did you leave?
Like you say later on in your post, the position is entirely voluntary. I left for the sake of my own mental health and to focus on my studies, if you really want to know. It's much less taxing when my rant posts on the forums don't require me to moderate them on the side.

Feel free to contact me with a few names you have in mind as a former staff member.
I'll be sure to.

Subjective.
Sure, but judging from the reactions it's gotten, it's not a statement without merit.

Then why make this post in the first place?
It was 9am I hadn't slept and wanted to air out my thoughts on the forums, as I am allowed to. Besides, as I explained in a reply, my expectations and my hopes aren't in line. I don't expect shit to change, but I hope my expectations are wrong, this time.

You should have stayed a little longer!
Nice try, cabal. You won't keep your hooks in me.

Why did you play in the first place and why complain if you dont want to see a change?
I played because it was fun. I complain because I do want to see change. I'm just realistic in my expectations.

Also, in case you were wondering, I don't hold any actual bad blood to management. WN is very beaurecratized and institutional, and if there's anything I know about those systems, it's how much of a bitch influencing positive change is, no matter the position you hold.

P.S sorry for the late response I was busy cranking 90s on counterstrike (global elite btw (2000 hours))

Hello. First off sorry if this comes in a bit too corpo or non-personal. This is how I personally like to write! :)

1. WILLARD NETWORKS IS NOT A SERIOUS RP SERVER. IT IS DARKRP MASQUERADING AS SOMETHING SERIOUS.

We are in the works to announce changes that are directly a result of the feedback provided on this perspective. The changes are set to be implemented soon with a broader community meeting soon to address it as well. Changes such as these take time to work on and can not be implemented in a week nor a month's time for that matter. But they are coming and we have addressed it as a collective in our recent staff meeting.

2. MANAGEMENT OF THE COMMUNITY IS APATHETIC AT BEST. THEY DO NOT TAKE ON ANY FEEDBACK WITHOUT EXTRAORDINARY EXTERNAL PRESSURE.
This is a very subjective take on management in general. I am sorry that you believe that management is apathetic, we are not. We are in a position where we have to work as a team in order to collaborate properly and provide good plans for the future of the community. Apathetic is not something we wish to have been categorised as, and we are sorry that you feel that way. Perhaps our lack of presence towards the feedback is what drives you to this conclusion.

In any case, we do act on feedback; perhaps not to the decree that you wish in order to facilitate your previous historic expectations of enjoyment.

We have conducted several changes without "extraordinary" external pressure. Our previous community feedback form has provided us with a multitude of changes, the most noteworthy one being the map cycle change, an increase in CT presence, IG CCA presence, CP atmosphere and a larger variety of changes. Previous changes also include the workings of the clothing update which was wished for alongside a reform of our economic model which I myself, am looking very much forward to.

In rather broader terms of personal change, we as management have increased our activity overall OOCly and IG, though IG still remains a hard task to combine especially now during xmas season with IRL priorities, OOC management, community management, and well- the list goes on. We are doing our best. :)

In conclusion, to point two, I feel sorry that you perceived us to be apathetic, and I do believe you probably mean another adjective in consideration that if we did not show any enthusiasm, interest, or feelings towards this- we would not be here, on a Gmod Community, doing HL2RPG.

3. GMOD IS A BAD MEDIUM FOR GOOD RP, AND MOST OF THE PLAYERS HERE DO NOT KNOW HOW TO RP PROPERLY.
The first sequence of your sentence is rather subjective. I believe that GMOD in its current state in regards to it not originally being a RP-based medium, is good towards its intention. It is what we as both players and volunteers make the most out of that matters.

In regards to the final sequence that players here do not know how to RP properly, this correlates somewhat with your statement in claim 1. We hope to arrange certain implementations that can allocate fixes permanently to increase the quality of RP with the consequence of the flow for intake of new players and possibly retainment.
However, it can also be looked at from a different perspective; a lot of players are experienced RP'ers, and with our current state- despite our quality assurance measures both for community-wide, server-wide, and faction-wide solutions we are due to have some individuals who are not kept up to the standards both expected personally and server-wide.

4. THE MAP IS NOT THE PROBLEM. THE VENDORS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM IS YOU
A lot of RP is based upon individual initiative and overall voluntary initiative in unison. This might not correspond as much to the standards that we expect, but sometimes they do and we get great results. I won't repeat what I said too much earlier in my post however I can say that;

There will be both radical changes and others concerning:
- narrative
- admin management
- player quality
- faction collaboration
- quality assurance

There will be a wider-community meeting as well sometime soon.

Now I will be closing off this thread if there are any more personal instigations or shitposts. Keep it constructive.
