Living in a bunker or being cooped up in a castle cultivates one of the most dangerous natural resource on the planet; boredom. Thankfully a number of free TVs have found themselves filtering out into the wastes and wonder of Sector 10 for some time now, like so much industrial cast offs. A most fundamental question arrives. One which predates the cultivation of the cathode ray by untold eons; what should you actually watch?
You leaf through the collection of City 24 media. As for who is cataloguing it an why you can only guess, but as you flip through the files a certain name catches your eye, and curiosity compels if not the commitment to a full episode's viewing, at least a brief gander. You're not even sure you caught this episode when it aired.
"William. May I call you William?"
"Certainly, Alfred."
"William, what do you have to say to allegations that the Certified MoE Classics line of book publication is a flaunting of Old-World sentiments, and that such works ought not to see the light of day?"
"Well to that I'd say, I can see we at the Ministry ran with the Nightly Crackdown as the name of your show. I'll say that much first."
Both parties laugh for a time at the guest's banter, their sensibly staged chuckles further assisted by the still in-use digital recording of audience laughter. The slightest look of discomfort works its way across William's visage for less than a second before he brushes the allegations away with a magnanimous wave of his hands.
"But no, of course not. The Disbursement of Attenuated Literature Act was adopted from Terminal Seven because it got results, and similarly positive trends are already presenting themselves here as well. Socio-Stability is up 3 percent week-on-week this last month and I think a significant portion of that is owed to the adoption of the Certified MoE Classics program here in City 24."
"And just what do you think drives those marginal criminals towards obedience? Books? Really? Do slummers even know how to read?"
"Well not for very long."
"Not for long?"
"Not for very long at all, no. They simply stop being slummers."
"You know I've heard the folks at the MoP are getting ready to make some pills to help with that."
"Well until then there's literature."
"Yes, literature that until quite recently was banned from public consumption."
"Quite right, it is the Ministry of Enlightenment's working theory that old world literature can serve as an inoculate against Anti-Civil thinking. Say, you're old, you've no doubt taken your fair share of vaccines over the decades."
"Of course."
"Well think of the way vaccines work by training your body to respond negatively to certain viral stimuli. The Attenuated Literature from the selfsame act functions in such a way to induce gut-negative reactions to Anti-Civil thinking. In essence, we are vaccinating people against bad ideas."
"Seems a little far-fetched."
"Well I think we live in a rather far fetched world, we cannot limit our thinking... about how to limit thinking," concluded William with a grin.
The sound of a not too far off explosion has you pause the old recording. Something else soon takes your attention. Perhaps tomorrow, or tomorrow still.
