Theoretical Move to S&Box/Source 2

With S&Box well on its way, there is an obvious future for source modding and it would appear that Gmod will likely not be a part of that future. Simply put, I don't believe Gmod will survive for long after S&Box's release. It will still exist, but with a far diminished player count who stick it out for the niche of Source 1.

This is because S&Box is meant to be a direct upgrade/evolution of Gmod. It's Gmod but for Source 2, a better engine that can handle far more. In almost every case where we see a high player-interactive engine being outshined by an upgraded version, the old version gets left behind almost every time. We've seen this with Goldsource, and how Half Life 1 mods are now only enjoyed by a niche community of people who enjoy that.

With a likely imminent collapse in player numbers, we will undoubtedly see some sort of drop in player numbers for HL2RP simply because less people are finding HL2RP. What we will also see are new HL2RP servers appearing on Source 2, which I'm sure will have development put into it that utilizes the new engine.

1) What do you all think is the best move Willard should take, in the hypothetical that developer resources are permitting?
And
2) What do you think a S&Box HL2RP server would be able to take advantage of compared to Gmod HL2RP?

I personally believe that we should move to S&Box if we care about the continued growth of the server. If we don't move to it, we are essentially throwing in the towel and choosing the inevitable end due to an agreement on stagnation. Gmod's time is limited. The player count will not be growing in the long term and, like Goldsource before and many other engines which have become outdated, it will sink into obscurity as a relic of the era. It's an "adapt or die" moment for HL2RP servers because, as is the nature with all events like this, competition will rise on an engine that simply has better, more modern features. It will only be a matter of time before Source 2 is fully utilized AND chooses the right formula for running things, kinda like Willard has.

As for what a server for S&Box would look like, I am not entirely sure. I can only guess, as I also don't know the full extent of Source 2's capabilities. It can handle a higher player count much more effectively, supposedly thousands of players, and I know for certain that it can handle far, far larger maps. In theory, should an HL2RP server grow large enough, you could see a city with a few hundred people in it, if not thousands (though I imagine this would not be the case unless HL2RP saw a miracle revival by, say, a new mainline Half Life game.

On the other side of that coin, the logistics would be an absolute nightmare. It's already hard enough staffing a server of 50+ people, to include admins, faction leads, etc. We would need an elaborate and corporate-scale management system to handle more than a hundred people, to include a full hierarchy. To put that in perspective, people get degrees and get paid tens of thousands, if not over a hundred thousand a year to be at the top of that hierarchy. People of that caliber are not easy to find which is why they are sought after.

We'd also see general graphics improvements, the capability to handle far more props and entities, and less jank shit.

im open to it but its too early to say just yet, we'll see what the future brings:approve:

(hl2rp with source 2 graphics... yes please)

HL2RP would be lovely on S&Box, but it would require a MASSIVE amount of manpower to make it even work at all, and I'm just talking about the asset part of things. The biggest part arguably, is the map. You can't just port over garrysmod maps, it can't work that way given how source 2 works. Though, given time and resources, it can work.

There are a few items that excite me from Source 2/S&Box from my time in its alpha.

Map Size Limits
The S&Box theoretical limits are pretty insane because of Source 2. As of right now, the actual grid is limited and breaking those limits cause some janky physics. But there's no TECHNICAL reason anymore that maps are limited and some gamemode devs have already experimented around with inifnite maps. (This may have changed from my last use of S&box from years ago). To me, this is probably the biggest boon to HL2RP possible if done right. Imagine having a city connected to canals connected to outlands, with the ability of the combine flying seamlessly through each section naturally. However, this would introduce other problems that IMO only a massive increase in player counts could solve.

Netcode Improvements/Engine exposure
S&Box is much more geared toward massive changes and custom code. I was only invited in because of some mapping I've done in the past; so I can't touch too much on the code structure side of things since my knowledge is limited. However, the capabilities of S&box (C#) appears to be improved over Gmod's GLUA. UI performance should no longer be a negative detractor & limitation as it is now. Playercounts goes hand-in-hand with this.

Improved Hammer
Hammer is greatly improved in S&Box IMO. One of the biggest downsides to mapping in source is limitations, something that S&box completely eradicates. This gives a mapper much more freedom. This goes hand-in-hand with map size limits.

Models/Asset Party
This is a recent posting., assets can be streamed and added in without server restarts. For an RP's use case, you could have major events take place naturally and with surprise instead of "Downloading XYZ model" and giving a bit of a spoiler to the playerbase. Bodygroups from what I can tell also have no limits as far as number is concerned allowing for every rpers dream, more clothing. If I'm wrong on this someone please correct me.

Garrys mod has been out for longer than most of its players have been alive, there has been a ton of time for people to learn and develop the framework.

When S&B comes out I suspect it may be a few years before HL2 RP becomes a thing, and even longer before it has the amount of development Willard has on gmod. (plus gmod has *tons* of maps and mods that are used for servers that S&B doesn't have)

Regardless, I am eager to see the future of this gamemode

There will probably NEVER be HL2RP in S&Box. From what I've heard, they've been trying to go for the more sanitized route, think of Roblox.

i remember hearing that garry newman hates rp servers

This is assuming that FacePunch isn't going to have a digital bouncer that halts Roleplay related gamemodes to even exist.

It is absolutely no secret that there was an open statement saying they will lock out RP. I don't know what the future holds but I've heard from some very influential people with access to S&BOX that there is likely not going to be a trinket of support in regards to the RP playerbase taking hold in it.

Basically what you would expect in Source 2 is exactly what you would get in Arma 3's Half Life 2 modifications, and there's not a lot of people that take part in that.

I'm very skeptical.

I would really like to see this sort of server in s&box
i remember hearing that garry newman hates rp servers
One of his more recent twitter posts in April (regarding the Bub Games 1942 RP thing) says he doesn't mind them and finds them interesting most of the time, he says he hates the RP which is clearly a guise for something more sinister. Is this out of date already or something?
( Link to tweet: )

I doubt they would police HL2RP too heavily, obviously if anything is inappropriate for kids then it shouldn't be on s&box at all, or Garry's Mod for that matter as it is now, because there are so many kids playing it. If some people take RP to the extremes on s&box, or another Garry's Mod server does something similar, then a I'd see why facepunch would introduce a blanket ban at some point.

That being said, I would expect RP servers to eventually pop up, but not for YEARS, people probably aren't going to be into it for a long time, and alongside that you need time to develop these things.

I will be blunt and say S&Box is not a direct upgrade to Garry's mod nor is it intended that way. FP themselves have made it clear that S&Box is not Gmod 2 and has no relation to it in any capacity. I do believe they made their stance quite clear a few times already that they wish for no one to see it as a sequel or whatever because its simply not, its a whole new standalone game that is of its own design and making with the only thing connecting GMOD and S&Box together even remotely being its creators and sandbox genre.

As for Gmod dying when S&Box comes out is also wrong. Sure some players would move over but the majority more than likely won't given their communities and servers will take a long time to make a move over- it may even take years for some of the best gamemodes to even show their face on S&Box because of sheer development time and resources required for such. On top of that, there is a ton- and I mean a ton of skeptics looking at S&Box whom won't ever move over until their favourite gamemodes move over as well as being able to see the game 100% stable and being more unique and creative than Gmod- which so far some believe it won't.

Understandable given the history of games as of late has been nothing but disappointment after disappointment.

Ontop of all the above, you also got the claims of Anti-RP behaviour going around, as well as claims regarding the ability for FP to moderate other peoples servers, ontop of the claims that the way the MP side of the game is designed feels restrictive and controlling.

I of course haven't touched or even looked much at S&Box because ngl, I am not really that fond of it nor interested in it. Sure it does look nice but personally nothing really stands out or catches me eye. And all the skeptism around it doesn't help my view nor opinion either so I stick to the sidelines as there has been a lot of interesting things about it, but also some rather negative things at the same time. So sticking on the safe side of watching it carefully.
