There is nothing to do as a citizen in your spare time. If you can find inter-character roleplay, it's fine, but that is no guarantee. If you can't find that, which is a majority of the time unless you want to play not only the most extroverted dude ever but also gamble on someones quality of RP, you are relegated to walking around aimlessly.

"Go to the work desk."

The work desk is not manned nearly enough to fix this. Most of the time it is empty. People are literally clammoring for work just to do something in their downtime yet cannot find it.

"Attend workshifts."

These happen even less than the work desks, are low in numbers from what I've seen, and usually get filled with a minute. Sometimes they aren't even announced. If you don't sprint the moment you hear the call, if there is a call, you are out of luck.

"Interact with Civil Protection"

They are the most anti-RP faction I've seen on this server as far as an antagonist goes. Any attempt to interact with them outside of committing crimes right in front of them is met with a resounding "Fuck off" from all of them. They aren't even antagonistic unless something big happens, which results in everybody getting locked in a room for thirty minutes as they beat everyone and then walk away. These aren't even totalitarian police. They're just harsh police who will commit brutality and nothing else. No random searches. No nerve wracking questions. Nothing. Funnily enough, I've seen the fucking OTA interact more with you than Civil Protection in a manner that is actually intimidating.

"Go pick up trash."

No. I want to roleplay, not fucking grind.

"Go be an anti-citizen."

There is no fucking indication of actual resistance. There's wayward gunmen who proceed to shut down everything, and then just committing petty crimes in front of officers so you can get any sort of roleplay. People are now relegated to just doing stupid shit in front of cops to provoke any sort of reaction. Meanwhile, there is no hint of actual resistance. No anti-government graffiti. No posters. No vandalism. Nothing. What I'm going to assume, because this is the case every fucking time this type of shit is happening, is that rebels either don't exist (Staff Issue) or more likely, the rebels are just fucking around and circlejerking in the sewers and outlands instead of, you know, actually forming a resistance (Faction issue. Combine aren't being invasive enough.)

This fucking sucks. I am begging for literally anything to happen. Workshifts, interesting endeavors, etc. All I've seen that helps that is the CCDE (open for about 30 minutes and then never seen again) and some sort of attempted assassination that didn't actually contribute anything to Citizen RP other than giving a spectacle and the cops a reason not to man the work desk.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. BioticRP is in the same state right now, where you can only walk around and sweep, hoping to not get beat up for looking at a citizen wrong. I get that's the point, but just give us something to break the monotony of "wake up, sweep, get beat, repeat".

...CCDE (open for about 30 minutes and then never seen again)...

Primarily the issue of it being boring as hell. Usually, most people that bother visiting the place just go in, paranoically look around, then immediately leave. We try keeping it open to give blue suits some tasks every now and again, but it's even more obscure than the work desk, so we just end up standing behind the counter for twenty minutes before becoming bored.

Then again, it's not so advertised... Was saving it for the hopeful future, in which the desk isn't used just to give random tasks, but it's proving to take a long ass time, so... We'll see.

But yes, Citizen RP is boring as hell. Likely will always be boring, since making it interesting requires active effort, such as creating a group, organizing events, etc. The unfortunate solution to this dilemma (at least one most people come to) is to either join a faction, or do weird things ICly, just for the sake of making at least a bit of fun. The latter, unfortunately, requires you to abandon any hopes of making a "believable" character, which is also why the usual argument of "Just do interesting things yourself" fails a slight bit.

And to be honest, anything fun you come up will likely be shut down by Civil Protection, simply because... Well, that's kind of their job. That's why most of the "gang" groups that have been created eventually end up killed, like the Hoshi Clan and Fat Cats.

The only possible solution to this problem is to placebo it, since, realistically speaking, you can't make it so everyone has stuff to do all of the time. Different public events can help spice things up a bit, but it unfortunately requires things to be relatively peaceful, which is very hard when there are constant shootouts outside.

Another solution could be to incentivize player-made groups through political parties and such, but it unfortunately requires a bit of dedication AND a sizable payoff (that is, making an actual difference) to work.

Events, naturally. Although most of the time they don't actually provide Citizens with anything, and instead lessen the amount of things they can do (unless it involves crime). Fortunately, some guy wrote a post I liked about a year ago, so I'll put it here for the sake of shilling.

Essentially, it's all up to external forces. Doing stuff as a Citizen is a lot harder, and a lot less influential. I understand why some people don't bother, however. It isn't fun seeing all of your work give an underwhelming result (which most of the time is what you get).

Conclusion? Need to do more fun stuff. Anything. I've personally been quite bored with the current map. Of course, "be the change you want to be" applies, but it's hard and takes effort (as well as the Socio-Stability not being in the shitter).

what i personally like to do when it comes to citizenrp is just talk to people, like other citizens

i call this, smalltalkrp
you could sit on a bench and initiate a conversation with someone passing by or sitting down with you

you could lounge in the cmru clinic and chat with the doctors until somebody walks in with 17 gunshot wounds and a katana in their stomach

you could look for stores that are open and chat with the employees (this will never happen :3c)

if you have a job, you can even chat with your co-workers

it’s not much, but it’s something to do during downtime, it’s my favorite activity as well because funny things can happen as a result, like a crow walking into a store and trading a bagel for a shoe
i just realized that you seemingly mentioned something like this at the start (inter-character roleplay)

damn.

To be fair the cops are like that because the socio-status is on code red. Unless what you've experienced is before the socio-status being elevated, I don't see this as a permanent issue as it will go away as the district becomes more stable.

I don't understand why people keep acting like it's only this way because the socio-stability is bad. It's like that the whole time almost. It might as well be always on red. I'm so glad the citizens get to starve and thirst to death while the Combine circlejerk in the Nexus and the webuls do nothing be tote guns around acting like their actually doing something.

I also love how Combine complain about shot-copping, but that's literally what the Combine do to the anti-citizens lurking in the sewers/outlands at the wrong place, wrong time. You complain when you get shot in the face, but when I do it's my fault and I shouldn't have been there.

The rule about not needing a reaction /me after an s2k initiating /me is ridiculous, and I'm sure changing that will scare rebels into not shot-copping so much like bunch of snipers from Battlefield 3, because the Combine will actually have a fighting chance to shoot your anti-authoritarianistic face after you just put the whole city in lockdown.

But it really doesn't help civRP either when the only Combine actually outside the dang Nexus is walking around telling groups of citizens to disperse or you'll get beat. I'm so glad these guy are trying to facilitate role play. The city needs some more props around to help the visual imagery. Workshifts need to be outside the same dang warehouse somewhere else around the city to bring some more life into the dead streets we aimlessly walk on waiting for the trash and container entities to respawn.

I'm also tired of seeing people be like,

"Get a job"

"Be an anti-citizen"

"Do workshifts"

"Talk to people"

"Become a loyalist"

What are these things even going to do? It doesn't change anything. You'll just end up doing the same thing with a different set of priorities. And it only puts a band-aid on the massive gaping bullet hole in your chest, when you need a dang surgery to fix the issue instead of continually trying to tape over the hole.

bro you forgot... it's good for character development bro...

The only memorable experiences I have had as a citizen were during mega-events like City 8, that entire mega-event was amazing.

I had yakuza hunting my character down after I pissed them off after I helped the wrong guy, I actually had a tangible antagonist for my character. I was hired by the CPRD to assist on a project in an underground lab, and when the thing we were attempting to contain escaped, me and my fellow scientists gathered a group of citizens to charge back into the heart of the outbreak in order to set the facility to self destruct.

I really want to do more mega-events, Black gold, and rising sun were really fun to play and I really want to do more events like them

This has technically always been Willard from my experience, it's just elevated now because nobody is trying anything interesting with their characters. Every character, that be it loyalist, slummer or just normal citizen, acts the same way as the next one. To be fair, I don't blame them, why would you try to make an interesting character who'll get killed in the first week or two, when, you can instead just make a really generic character who can survive really long, and can get to experience everything at least once.

The best event in my opinion has to be hands down the Beijing event. Yes, it wasn't perfect but the interesting map combined with the corrupt CP's and various gangs made it oh so desirable. Everything worked off one another and depending on who you spoke to, you would hear different stories from places you never heard of.

One thing I'll always preach from the bottom of my heart is that the citizen faction never gets anything, that be it expos or events. But then again, maybe Hoki's right in saying that the server will pick up once red socio-status goes away.

It's a classic and common blunder of HL2RP servers. Citizen RP is undeniably the most important faction to support and yet often gets relegated to receiving the least support of them all. Every other faction should exist primarily to directly influence how Citizen RP is, and if it doesn't meet that first and foremost, it shouldn't exist at all.

Despite this, factions tend to start veering off and doing their own thing which only gets much worse once the staff stop giving a shit as well and enabling them through events that citizens don't even get to participate in, like today when multiple events and things were happening yet citizens couldn't even be involved in any of them, even when one of them was directly in the plaza.

What could be done to make citizen rp more interesting?

The only times I have enjoyed citizen RP was during mega-events (city 8, I17, Beijing, District 47, and even the black gold event). While I would like to see mega-events done more often, it would likely cause burnout in the creative team if overdone. The reason I found Citizen RP so enjoyable in these events was as a result of the freedom given to the players, citizens could actually impact an overarching plot that would affect the rest of the event.

The Freedom to impact an ongoing story is what makes Citizen RP enjoyable.

Black Gold was an excellent example of player freedom, the creative team had pretty much built a large portion of the story around the things the players did.

During the event, one of the players in the event a player named Alexander Weaver was sniped by another player. A massive number of players worked to save Weaver's life as he was one of the only competent leaders in the event. The players decided to venture into a large cave system in order to get antlion extract so Vortigaunts could save Weaver. They succeeded in this (though a number of players died in the process).

It was amazing to watch, none of this was planned by the creative team, this only happened because the players wanted it to, it was incredible.

There needs to be some sort of automated system to gain SC and creds, CP's dont man the work desk, you have to be lurking outside the warehouse in order to catch a workshift, CCDE is open sometimes and lets be fr no one wants to RP the work desk or giving people jobs to do thats why there needs to be an automated system, it keeps everyone happy i'd rather grind SC and Creds with a automated system like how rebels grind trash drops than not be able to grind SC and creds at all.

i think devs are working on automated workshifts or something like that

Citizens are meant to be a neutral entity; survival by not poking their heads above the ramparts.

The issue is that this inherently isn't fun, so people tend to slowly drift into one of two camps (loyalist or rebel/slummer) which is why the focus is there and not on the "base" experience.
