Introduction

If you made it this far it means you're either a disgrace to the human race, or a pioneer among the Overwatch forces. The Overwatch Transhuman arm are a constant bunch, who's loyalty is always, without fail, dedicated towards the Combine. To become the best Overwatch solider one can be, this guide was concocted to offer insight into what constitutes for a deployment, behaviour during a deployment, and many more.

It is important to recognize ones faults when making mistakes, this guide is just a mere outline for how to act, and most experience comes from acting within the field.

Combat Deployment guidelines

Deployments can vary in reason and quantity, ranging from an attack on a group of Civil protection, to an escort for a member of the administration. Faction leads reserve the right to modify deployments based on the threat, number, or position of the threat. This part details information regarding combat deployments.

COOLDOWN: N/A

Following a containment field failure within the Infested Zone, a smaller-scale stabilisation team is to be deployed alongside CWU personnel to locate and amend the likely sabotage. Stabilization teams on these types of deployments are to attend to the main objective strictly and not make an effort to pursue sighted trespassing unknowns; warning shots are welcomed. These deployments by nature will be as frequent as sabotage actions that occur by resistance forces.

Infestation Sweeps
COOLDOWN: 2 HOURS

Infestation sweeps are lead by Ordinals with the purpose of sweeping the sewer part of the map. The main purpose of these sweeps are to examine the local infestation growth, expunge any necrotic or exogen threats, or to capture any citizens who've found themselves unlucky enough to encounter you. Any citizens found within the sewers are automatically tagged as NOMAD, and therefore expected to be stopped, searched, captured, and later handed off to civil protection for questioning. In the rare instances the citizens you find fight back, it it common courtesy to hold your ground and scare them away. In rarer instances you find yourself actively pursued or attacked by these unsavoury individuals, it justified to not only fight back, but also pursue them. What constitutes as holding your ground or being pursued is always left to the discretion of the squad leaders. The responding force is expected to be reasonable and justifiable, if this is later found out to not be the case, the squad leader will be put under heavy scrutiny by faction leads.

Response Sweeps
COOLDOWN: DEPENDENT

Response sweeps are much more spontaneous and spur of the moment deployments. This is usually brought on by attacks from the rebel player base or similar occurrences. Due to it being more spontaneous it is highly advised players within the faction prepare their Overwatch characters prior to these kind of sweeps. When these sweeps are in effect, the team of soldiers are expected to probe the slum and infestation areas, in search of any resistance members. Unlike infestation sweeps, response sweeps are much more aggressive, with the squad itself acting with much more haste. Depending on the circumstances of the sweep, it is ideal that players only search for armed and dangerous citizens. If a rebel is ever caught during a response sweep, they are to be mended back to health and handed to civil protection for questioning.

Shadow Sweep
COOLDOWN: DECIDED BY FLs

The most restricted sweep, as it allows the Overwatch side to very easily catch unsuspecting rebels by surprise, and in return PK them, or lose them a few items. Shadow sweeps are often rare, and done in very limited numbers. Shadow sweeps are only approved by Faction leaders, and only done under very specific circumstances. If the Combine side repeatedly experience loss after loss, a few shadow sweeps may be organized to level the playing field. These deployments mainly take place in the underground but may extend to the slum area. Due to a shadow sweep being done in near complete stealth, it is mandatory to turn off radio chatter. Because OTA provide more noise when running, it is also advised that upon entering the sewers, the squad walk rather than run, making the least amount of noise possible to catch anyone by surprise. Shadow sweeps are done with the intention of capturing and crippling the rebel player base, usually after a string of successful attacks against the Combine.

Spikewall Deployment
COOLDOWN: DEPENDENT

The Spikewall unit is a unit to bridge the gap between the strength with Civil protection and the Overwatch Transhuman arm, to act as a powerful mediator between the two. In situations where an OTA deployment would be seen as excessive, but Civil Protection still need the assistance, a Spikewall unit may be used. Spikewall units are either used to reinforce protection teams or to assist them in an ongoing fight. To request deployment seek approval OOC from either an EOW player or a Faction lead, to request it IC ask so on the radio.

Hardpoint Guard Duty
COOLDOWN: N/A

Hardpoints are remote outposts of significant importance to the Combine, often being placed in the perimeter of Cities to serve as a buffer against any outside threat. In the context of our current map, hardpoints are mainly located in the underground portion of the map, providing surveillance and security against potential anti-citizen incursions into the surface. Your objective when stationed at any hardpoint is to repel all lifeforms from the immediate area and hold off any attacks, so don't chase or leave the hardpoint for any reason. Captured individuals must be held within the hardpoint until collected by Civil Protection via the outpost's nearest elevator.

Passive Deployments

Passive deployments are to add a little extra character to the surrounding environment. It's important that during a passive deployment, you do not encroach on any RP situations unneeded, and are merely there to either observe, or guard.

Intact/Marginal: 2 OTA passively flagged-up.
Unrest: 3 OTA passively flagged up.

Street patrols can be done on Unrest/fractured (max 2 grunts and 1 ORD).
EOW may authorize OWS patrols during JW/AJW.
FLs may authorize street patrols outside of these conditions.

High-Priority Region

High-Priority Region is a located based deep within the Nexus. It's not uncommon to find high tier loyalists and possibly even administration members wandering the halls and pursuing their duties. OWS and EOW are free to roam this area. You are encouraged to question the intentions of any single person in this area, save the Administration.

Vantage Point 1/2

These vantage points do offer a good overview of the city streets. It's not uncommon you might find passing citizens pointing up to you, waving, or offering some other gesture to catch your attention. If this does happen don't be afraid to call civil protection over to have them escorted away. Grunts and soldiers may patrol between the vantage points as well as the Nexus, but by no means should you mix-match unit types.

Nexus Courtyard

The courtyard to the Overwatch Nexus. When it is open, citizens may transverse into and throughout this space with immense scrutiny as outlined in the guide. You are encouraged to patrol this area as a soldier whilst it is open, but you are not required to do so. However, do not engage in conversation with a citizen. You are expected to act similar to the British's Kingsguard. If this area is closed and citizens are found within the perimeter, you must remove them without lethal force unless resistance is found. This first strike rule does not apply to the Overwatch or Administrative wings.

Behaviour during deployments

It is important to remind everyone reading this that the characters we encounter on deployments are real characters, characters that people have put extensive time and effort into building. With OTA being a strong and powerful faction, we as faction leads do not want players to use this position as a proxy for their OOC motives towards players. This also goes for the death and capture of players, we expect all members of the faction to keep their OOC behaviour as cordial as possible.

Containment Units: As seen in Half Life: Alyx, the containment units, or better known as Grunts, are seen with much more expression when compared to their Half Life 2 brethren. Because of this, members of the faction are given much more leeway with how they express their character, either being disgusted, scared, or maybe even sarcastic if the right circumstances are met. With that being said there are, and is, limitations to how extensive one can portray their grunt characters when deployed. For a direct reference watch the video HERE.

Overwatch Soldiers: Half Life 2 gave us a glimpse into how the strict the regime is, and at the front of that were their soldiers. The Overwatch Soldier is expected to be as precise, and accurate as possible, acting as the Combines fingers and hands. Try incorporate these facts into your character when you play.
Overwatch Soldiers dislike small talk, and shouldn't offer any, unless said small talk involves critical information to their current directive. For example, when escorting a member of the administration, talking about if the break room has any coffee left is obviously a no-go. On the other hand, if they ask whether or not the streets are safe to walk around on, a response is suggested.

Special Units: OWH, APF, OWM, SPK are all units considered special due to their unique weapons or armour. All of their behaviour is the exact same as Overwatch Soldiers.

Overwatch Squad Leader - Ordinal: Overwatch Squad leaders are the second highest ranks in the Transhuman arm, just sitting below the Elite Overwatch Soldier. Squad leaders, just as the name implies, lead squads on any given deployment, leading their units with as much efficiency as possible. Squad leaders are expected to be constantly communicating with their squad, issuing commands and other related directives, all with the purpose of executing their designated task with ease. In a roleplay setting their behaviour is akin to that of an Overwatch Solider, though this time around with much more authority.

Elite Overwatch Soldiers: At the top of the hierarchy are Elite Overwatch Soldiers, the top of the top. Aside from their behaviour being much more commanding and authoritative, they also have the ability to speak Imperial, a language only known to Overwatch soldiers. Imperial is not a language that should be spoken without purpose, and should only be used to delegate directives with the mask of secrecy.

Communication

Communication is key to any important deployment. Use of OTA terminology is highly advised to help squad coordination. Squad leaders and other units are once again, advised to use and deploy waypoints at critical times. Waypoints are an essential tool for OTA to passively explain or point out areas of interest to their other squad mates.

Escorts

Escorts are one of the core purposes of OTA, and serve as a barrier to prevent assassination attempts on the local administration. Escorts that are provided to the administration member supersede all previous directives, and regardless of who it is, must protect them at all cost. This does go for Civil protection also, so if a civil protection unit is threatening your escort without just cause, you are justified to stop them or prevent them from harming your escort. Outside the nexus is a dangerous place, as its where most escorts open themselves up to being assassinated. To prevent this OTA are within their right to terminate the escort, and direct the escortee back to the nexus. For the next maps iteration here are the list of characters and their escorts.

Behaviour during escorts is rather simple, but also the most strict as the factions quality is being put on full display. Use of Overwatch terminology isn't to be used when conversing with a member of the administration, and when it does happen, it is expected to be as brief as possible. Examples from the OTA guide will be provided here:

"We are getting reports of anti-citizen activity within the local district; your escort needs to be terminated." ✘
"Anti-Citizen readings within local district, escort terminated." ✔

"You shouldn't go inside. It's dangerous." ✘
"Location deemed Hazardous; entrance is not advised." ✔

"Step aside, Citizen" ✘
"Move it!" ✔

"I heard we are getting new stun-sticks this year." ✘
"..." ✔

Obviously if one is playing a city-containment grunt, they are once-more allowed leeway in their speech.

ESCORT LIST

A brief list of the current administration members who are eligible for an escort. Requests from these characters can be found in the <ic-request> channel on discord. None of these individuals may leave Nexus without an escort that consists a minimum of 1 OWS (excluding CA/VA). Elite Soldiers may be played in the absence of EOW players, only if approved by a Faction Lead.
