"T u n n e l R a t s"
Triumphant was the interdimensional forces of the Universal Union, conquering the Earth at a point where it was already in a state of decline, within merely 7 hours. Many fled to safety; seeking a spot of security, away from the lingering threat of the Combine. Some succeeded, others failed, but in the end, everyone was affected in some way, shape, or form. Earth was no longer what it once was, no longer what its inhabitants had adapted to, everything was entirely alien to them."Underneath the land, we delved,
sheltered beneath a surfaced Hell,
a place of comfort, we had found,
and the only place where we are bound."
sheltered beneath a surfaced Hell,
a place of comfort, we had found,
and the only place where we are bound."
As the mighty fist of the Union impacted upon planet Earth, society began to crumble, and the new rulers planted their own flag on top of it. Fields of once green and luscious grass were now uninhabitable barren wastelands, prosperous towns and cities began to fall, and those who resided within made an attempt to flee, with some finding success in doing so. Among those who successfully escaped the grasp of the Combine were a previously unnamed group of ritualists originating from Paris, France.
Not much is understood about this group's history before the war as they kept themselves well hidden for a while, the only for sure known fact is that they had a cult-like presence, and whatever/whoever they worshipped is still unknown. Not long after the 7-hour war scarred Earth with the Combine's presence, word of the group started spreading around City Thirteen, or UU-controlled post-war Paris. Various individuals had found graffiti located in different parts of the city, having a connection to this anonymous group, featuring cryptic messages, symbols, and other mysterious markings.
People scrambled together to solve the meaning behind these laid out puzzles, and eventually, a part of the mystery had been solved. After a lot of arduous work, they managed to uncover a poem, labelled "Poem of the Tunnel Rats", along with a pre-war twenty euro bill, both buried away in an abandoned trainyard. Closer inspection of the bill revealed a set of coordinates written on the bottom right-hand side of the note (48.833857, 2.332333), leading to an old abandoned building. Inside this building was one of many entrances to the Paris catacombs, a network of underground tunnels expanding beneath Paris, holding the remains of over six million people, built to prevent the city from overflowing with cemeteries in the early 1800s, when the situation became urgent.
Ever since the discovery of this location, it has been a goldmine for anti-civil activity, and the clues laid out lead people to believe that this is where the Tunnel Rats fled to amidst the war, and whether they remain there or not is still unclear to this day, although their infamous poem highly alludes to it. There have been reports of mysterious lights, noises, and figures inside the tunnels, but it cannot be confirmed if these are connected to the mysterious group or not, many people linking it to the occasional visitings of urban explorers and rebel groups instead.
Various relics, such as jewellery items, have been found by those who dare venture the endless tunnels, perhaps left by the mysterious group, although there is no real evidence to support this, and sceptics believe them to just be items belonging to the original constructors of the catacombs. Some who wander in never even find their way back out again, due to the complex layout of the tunnels that expand deep underground, making it almost entirely impossible to locate an exit without navigational equipment. Occasionally, groups of people will gather together and will venture carefully inside the catacombs to look for items worthy of trading/selling in the City Thirteen Black Market.
The mystery of the Tunnel Rats may remain unsolved, forever.
