  • "I suggest keep it that way, after all, there's no saying that we've been completely abandoned if we turn the situ....."
  • "No no, you listen to me. I am still in charge of this city and I'll be dammed if I let it all slip away now, who knows what'll happen if it becomes a threat to them"
  • "I will not tolerate such disloyal speech, you get in line or I'll make you. I still have control of the systems"

Welcome to the Middle Kingdom

______________________________________________________________

INFORMATION
-This Event will be taking place from the evening of 14th of October till the afternoon of the 30th

-Set in 2008, city 51 has been the major population center for all of Asia for the last 5 years, although it certainly has been more of a strain on the combines resources then providing any actual benefit. To call it more then one giant refugee camp would be a mistake. Gangs have become the foremost point of governance, depending on whatever criminals control the area rather then the actual administration has become the norm for most living in the city.

-The focus in this event will be on TOTAL PLAYER FREEDOM. Everything will be set up IC, and if an important character dies, that's it. The player has to start from scratch with the next person in their organization's hierarchy being promoted to take their position.

-There is no chance of city 24 characters coming to this city, due to it being set in 2008. Write your characters with this information in mind

-Depending on the conclusion of the event, it may be possible (but unlikely) that you character may end up in city 24

-Anything you want to do, you can do. Just shoot one of our staff members a message and they'll be more then happy to facilitate any RP (Provided it makes a bit of sense). Just remember you are responsible for your actions, and that City 51 is far from secure in the clutches of the combine

SIGN-UPS
-For those of you who want to have a more involved character, such as a gang leader, CP officer, unique character or loyalist. this is the place to be.

-The chance of us accepting an application drastically goes up with effort put into the application, though this doesn't mean we want as many words as possible.

-You DO NOT NEED TO APPLY TO PLAY A NORMAL CITIZEN.

CHARACTER FORMAT

The * symbol represents a required filling, below.
Please DO NOT put your answers in bold, as to make the entry easier to read. Failure to do so will only result in me angrily staring at you from across the screen.

  • *Character Name: Al'huur
  • *Character Role: Undercover Vortigaunt
  • *Brief summary of the character: A vortigaunt. A healer. A saint. Many things, are this vortigaunt. Some of which, they themselves speak of as false. But their calling as a healer holds truest. A sagely one, a kindly one, though to kin. To humankind they remain distant, yet ever sympathetic. For the kindred ones are as shackled as they. Perhaps through them, he will learn. Perhaps through them, will he become truly vortal.

Circumstance weaves coincidence, and coincidence weaves incidents, either good, or bad. They stride through life, beneath the gaze of those whom would deem their freedom to be undesirable. Or rather...right beneath it. To find true wisdom, to study the creatures that fascinate them, they must be among them...so through an arrangement with a passing by band of humans, he dons the false shackles, and his fate unwinds. What lies beyond?

  • *Why do you want to play this character?: There are a couple reasons, some less complex than others, but I figure I might as well mention it in a comprehensive list.
    1. Playing a healer character would make up for one of my prior medic characters meeting a rather sudden and abrupt cut to his progress. Sort of a revisiting of my attempt to be a medical oriented character, although on an entirely different scale, interspersed with humanitarianism and hard decisions.
    2. Playing an undercover free vortigaunt would likely be very excellent experience for the eventual freeing of my actual and current character, so I wish to acquire and play this character on the basis of wanting to acquire more perspective and knowledge of how to roleplay such a vortigaunt.

Al'huur, the Sagely one. The saintly one. The merciful one.

    Age : 1356
Vortessence submersion : Masterful (50, if possible, can be knocked down if too much)

    ---------------------------------
    "Me. Myself. I."

You walk through the damp tunnels of whatever underworld exists beneath the city you had known so well, but decided to separate yourself from. Your shoes damp, your pants soiled, and your lungs defiant to the foul odors dancing all around. Yet throughout the dark nothingness, a light in the void. A small fire crackles in the distance. You approach, and find a cloaked vortigaunt sitting by a blaze. Their shackles sparkling in the flame, but they rested not upon their aged form. They rested around. The weaver gazes at you in alarm, but soon sees your pathetic state of being, returning to themselves. You approach meekly, barely able to utter a word in your panicked state, thinking a million miles a minute. The vortigaunt cuts you off before you even speak.

"You may remain here, while I hold it fit that you may."

You sit. The vortigaunt looks at you for a moment. And dialogue begins. You speak about your circumstances, and the vortigaunt seems receptive to your speech. As if they actually care. After a brief delay, they begin speaking of their own, but unlike you, they provide ample context. Tuck in, and get comfortable.

    -THE ARRIVAL-

"Yet still do I remember the vibrant flora of the Ooz'Merian realm...yet still do I hear the kin speak...do I still see them hunt...walk the soils beneath their feet as the world itself sings a song of unity in our presence. The world...the world I...and many others miss. The kindred's grief. The kindred's sorrow. Us. Ours. All.

But the grand fields hold little influence over this one's existence. Fond, as they are, they are not what truly matters. The world that they belonged to is gone. Though the memories, the feelings, the experiences remain, they are foreign to us, for the entity to tie them to is gone. Like the humans may say...'missing someone who is already gone'. It is alike.

But the human does not need to hear what was before. They need to hear what is now. Though I have said that the Ooz'Merian realm is where I hail from, my existence within was largely monochrome. A harmonious monotony. I still yet miss it....nonetheless, it is important to convey why I am here. I am here, because of the humans. Fascinating and simultaneously saddening are you. Though forever more do you instill a curiosity unlike anything else within the grand sanctuary.

Pardon, I have been straying from what I wished to convey to you. My arrival..yes...it was heralded by a singular human. A man. The most free man. The savior of us. Of vortikind. Through their battle against the enslaver of past did we finally taste freedom. And through their battle did we wind up here."

    -THE EXPERIENCE-

"Now, the human may be curious as to what my stay was like within your world. It has been...complicated, I believe is the appropriate word to describe the interactions of our kind and yours...though many of the kindred detest you, I hold a distant...interest. Your kind, as self-destructive as you are, hold traits similar to that of vortikind...though sadly, not innate, as is proper of any sufficiently intelligent being.

I have witnessed much. I have witnessed many. Humans whom slaughter, humans whom heal, humans whom hunt and humans whom perish. Many of your kind don many different roles and many different masks...it is an intriguing trait. Though present within vortikind, the intense divergence of your kind's mindsets is a thing of grotesque beauty to behold. Utter chaos, and unrestrained emotion. A concoction that an artisan would consider to be most volatile, yet frighteningly potent and self-sustaining.

So, to be succinct, the humans remain an enigma, primitive as you are at times. Your emotions rule you, your minds diffuse into an endless array of personalities and individualities, to such degrees that one would be surprised how your species has survived for such a long period of time. Yet you hold light within you, yet still you hold a semblance of the vortal truth within you. Perhaps, you hold the key to my own quest as well. What it means to truly be vortal."

    -THE JOURNEY-

"Now at the stepping stone of decisions, what lies beyond is unknown. The threads of fate unravel and lead to infinite possibilities. Severance. Prosperity. Discord. Harmony. Many lie ahead. Though the vortal sight does not grant me this wisdom, I trust within myself that the humans shall prove to be the catalyst to reveal what fate has designed us all to become, what roles we were destined to play, how significant, and where our journey ends.

And yet still, many things remain to be discovered, to be considered. As such, I choose to rise above my preconceptions, to rise above my present beliefs and go beyond. To see. To study. To observe. To adapt, it is what my quest shall be, as should be yours, human."

The vortigaunt imparts upon you a tale you most likely did not care to hear nor were expecting to, and when you inevitably bombard them with questions, they remain ultimately silent. Yet still, life goes on. With, or without you. This vortigaunt is one of many gears within, yet holding more wisdom and perspective than you ever will. You think on this as you yet blindly follow the narrow cone of light that will perhaps guide you to salvation, or doom. And as you depart, you briefly see the vortigaunt look in your direction. Perhaps you weren't as inconsequential as he might have first implied.

  • Tell us about yourself:
I'm a pretty active roleplayer with a passion for trying out new things. Though I've had some incidents with people in the past, I hope to be a contributing member of the community through my roleplay and otherwise.
  • Are you new to Willard Networks?:
I've been here for around 6 or so months if I were to consider total time. So, relatively new, but I've gotten my bearings.
  • Are you familiar with anyone around Willard Networks?:
I'm familiar with a lot of people here, a bit too many to list here. To varying degrees.
  • What's your favorite thing about Half Life?:
The fact that it's so open ended yet still has a cohesive narrative to follow, which has allowed a myriad of roleplay server to fill in the gaps in their own way, permitting imagination and creative freedom to run as the main driving force of it all. On top of the fact that it has fascinating creature designs and world designs I've ever seen in games (excluding half life 1, and using black mesa instead).

  • *Character Name: Liang Zihao. (l i昂Z I号)

  • *Character Role: City 51 Civil Protection Officer.

  • *Brief summary of the character: Native to the great motherland (祖国). Liang Zihao is afraid to slide a few credits in his pocket and then look the other way. Being selfless or heroic all that was bullshit to Liang, he only cared about himself and he's always only cared about himself. He will do whatever it takes to put himself in a better situation in life even at the cost of others. If you've got something that he deems useful, he'll be willing to 'bend the rules' or 'forget about what he saw'. Although he does take bribes he isn't extremely corrupt and still up-holds the combine's law and performs his duties.

  • *Why do you want to play this character?: With the presence of multiple gangs in the city, it will be an interesting dynamic to see if these gangs clash and if Liang will be caught in the middle of it. He'll have to decide if he'll intervene or maybe someone going to pay him to go mess with the other gang. I am also looking to play an extremely selfish and greedy character who is willing to put others at risk to save his own skin.

Life Back Home 回家的生活

O7uQKY8.jpg

The records of Liang Zihao's early life are lost in the passage of time. Apart of a large native family to the city of Xi'an, Liang was born in the time of industrial reforms in China during the 80's to 90's, these reforms allowed entrepreneurs to spring up across the country and begin forming their own markets. Liang was one of these early entrepreneurs and started a small store in Xi'an with a few of his university friends. No further information is known about the store or it's success but some records may show signs of money laundering or any illegal activity being performed within or around the premise of the shop.

Seven Hours Later
七小时后

eQoHdME.jpg

After the conflict which lasted seven hours, Liang Zihao was relocated to City 51, walking the streets now without purpose, Liang saw an opportunity he saw the civil protection enlistment drive and enlisted, being at a relatively young age he was able to pass the physical requirements and the mental examination wasn't an issue for him as well. Working on the job Liang started off somewhat caring about the lives of the civilians but after a few years of upholding socio-cohesion, the power trip got to his head, being anonymous put behind a vo-coder and mask gave him a new sense of power over others he had never felt before. He put his life before everyone else and was willing to take some form of payment to bend a rules a little or look the other way.

What Now? 现在怎么办

0cowxoX.jpg

Liang seems content within his position as an experienced member of City 51's civil protection force of course drugs, alcohol and whatever else helps fill the void in his life as well. He continues to move forward in life advancing his status through illegitimate means. He sees himself now in a junior leadership position and is awaiting further directives within City 51's nexus.

Our lives completely conquered by an alien race, it doesn't matter what anyone does from now on out, might as well make my life the best it can be before I bite the dust.

Character Role: Race x Shock trooper and leader of the Remnants group
Brief summary of the character: Drone#8151 is a shock trooper that got stuck in Bejing after the Cascade, It's the ''alpha'' of the group and is ruthless, cruel and heartless.
Why do you want to play this character?: I've always liked race x and found them interesting, being able to play one of them would be a super fun experience and rp, especially when my only characters so far have been citizens.
Full Backstory:

half_life__opposing_force___shock_trooper_by_tadeu_costa_d3jclu6-pre.jpg

--- The Invasion ---

When the resonance cascade happened, Drone#8151 was apart of one of the last waves to be teleported to earth. It was send to Bejing in a squad that consisted of its kin and pit drones. They set up a FOB in the undergrounds of Bejing and infested it to make it more habitable for their kind.

After doing so Drone#8151 and its squad set out to join the war for Bejing, fighting for hours slaughtering anything they could come upon but their group became fewer and fewer in numbers after each hard fought battle.

The tide soon changed as all of a sudden, support stopped coming through and comunication was lost with the home world, they started losing more and more battles, being picked off slowly becoming less in the squad until there was only it left.

Drone#8151 retreated underground, back to the FOB in hopes that it could get in contact with the home world or maybe get home but it would soon find out that it could not. So it send out a message from the FOB calling for all remaning Race X forces to retreat and regroup at the FOB but only one came, another shock trooper, Drone#2199. Due to them both being of equal rank a few problems arose between the two but was quickly fixed when they both engaged in a fight of strength which Drone#8151 won.

unknown.png

--- Post Cascade---

After the Cascade the two shock troopers continued to live in the FOB and sending out signals to get in contact with the home world and other troopers but they never got in contact. So they kept on fighting alone, sabotaging, kidnapping and killing but most importantly surviving.

They would feed on anything they could find, catch or kill, they weren't picky and had no sympathy for the earthlings. One day though, their lives would become even harder as the Combine arrived to earth and started the 7 hour war. The drones took no part in the war and stayed underground for the duration of it but they did reap some benefits from the war. A lot of people seeked refuge in the undergrounds and the two drones exploited that.

Years later of hiding in the underground the great Under Red Skies would occur. In which the drones had noticed the Combines weakening grip on the city and so the drones would yet again seek to exploite the situation to their benefit and creep out of the shadows and into the light and finish the war for Bejing.

Salvatore Cullinan was born in Boston, Massachusetts to an Irish Immigrant Mother and an Italian Father . They struggled throughout his childhood and young Sal didn’t receive a good education. He barely made it through a crappy highschool with his diploma and became working at a nightclub as a bouncer. Over the years he slowly became respected at the club and put on considerable muscle mass and seemed quite intimidating, he had a buzzcut that made him look the part as well. He eventually made his way up the chain becoming the supervising bouncer before the combine invaded. He survived the seven hour war and was relocated to City 24 at first. He was moved around quite a bit but was finally settling down in City 18. He made connections within the city and finally felt like he was a part of society again. He got a job with the C-C-U and worked as security for a small restaurant. Him and his manager formed a strong relationship and were good friends, they would work, chat and have laughs constantly throughout the day.
1665799631443.png

One shift Sal was closing up shop when outside there was a loud bang, followed by multiple other loud bangs, it was the sound of a fully automatic machine gun, he heard the sound of a civil protection officer being ripped to shreds by the machine gun, he took cover within the restaurant until the situation was over. He walked outside only to see his boss face first on the concrete, his body was riddled with bullets alongside other officers and citizens alike. Shortly after he was relocated to City 51 and he had enough of his crappy rations and constant relocation, he also had a burning hatred for the rebels that had caused this grief in his life and had ruined the lifestyle that he had finally grown accustomed to. He enlisted in the civil protection force and passed the mental and physical evaluation he now awaits training in the City 51 Nexus.

Míng jié

giphy.gif

<:: OUT-OF-DATE VISUAL DOWNLOAD; DATED 3 YEARS ::>
<:: SUMBISSION OF NEW VISUAL DOWNLOAD REQUIRED ::>

Character Role:
Civil Protection Officer ; i3
Brief summary of the character:

Míng jié is a decorated member of City 51's precinct, having served since almost its creation. However, he has seen himself stuck in the monotonous ladder of the Civil Protection rankings, finding himself not moving up or down. His gang ties extend far into his past, whether he still has them is up for you to find out.

Why do you want to play this character?:

Ever since I received my CP whitelist at the end of August, I've enjoyed Civil Protection RP and what it gives ever since. With this event, it gives me the opportunity to play a Civil Protection character much differently than I ever could on the main server (given where my current character stands). Corruption is my main goal here. I personally would like to experiment with corruption to see just how much it can influence RP or the overall storyline.

Full Backstory:

PART 1 - LONGING

rp_city30001.png
From the start of his life, he found himself waist-deep in the muck of gang relations. He grew up as their muscle, the person to get things done. Being tasked to infiltrate the ranks of their local Police Force, he very easily weaseled his way into the force and provided protection for the Triad. Whenever an investigation got too close for comfort, he took care of it. Someone get too close, he took care of it.

The fall of humanity and the invasion of the Combine intensely disrupted his life, as it did to many. It dislocated his family and severed his ties to the Triad, both of his families being smushed under the boot of the Combine. Friends, children, cousins, and many of those close to him had their lives swiftly stamped out. Xen creatures, portal storms, nothing stopped their lives from being saved. Being native to China, he found himself quickly assimilated into the populous of City 51.

PART 2 - CONSCRIPTION
rp_city30002.png
Just as fast as the gang he was submerged in was wiped, he found himself in the Midnight Marauders just as fast. Míng fit into the gang just as well as red paint mixed with red paint. However, once the Civil Protection program kicked up, he instantly knew what sort of opportunity it could provide and naturally, enlisted. Sort of a play-by-play of his pre-ascension life. The growing pains of the program reflected heavily on his person, destroying his mental state and throwing his physiology into a state of disrepair. He has only meer years to live if his mind or external elements don't get to him first.

PART 3 - DOWNFALL
1665962202060.png
Currently, Míng follows the protocol instilled in the precinct day in, day out. Every day he goes on-duty, his body battles with itself, killing itself with no support from anyone or anything else. His co-workers may have suspicions, but, nothing has been confirmed with his continuous gang involvement.

Part three will continue to be open-ended and will come to a close upon event conclusion.

Tell us about yourself:
I've been apart of the roleplay scene for a while, outside of HL2RP and Garrysmod as a whole.
Are you new to Willard Networks?:
I am not new, but my activity has been intensely sporadic until August. I had a time where a played a lot around April that didn't last long until, well, August.
Are you familiar with anyone around Willard Networks?:
I am! I'm close with Nesh, Madpro, and Xtra, as we've both come from the same server. I know Willum from another server as well.
What's your favorite thing about Half Life?:
My favorite thing about Half-Life in general is the overall dystopian feel of it. I've always loved dark and gritty things, I am naturally drawn to such settings. It just strikes a certain niche with me.

  • *Character Role: Quartermaster of the Civil Protection garrison
  • *Brief summary of the character:
  • Jochi is an ethnic Mongol in the CP force of City 51 with the rank of intention 3. Growing up in a traditional household, but had to change in order to fit in to this new world order he is apart of. His main job is to maintain the armory and its contents, and log the weapons that is given to every single civil protection functionary within the district, aswell as any authorized VIPs or POIs, (Persons of Interest). He will mainly be passiverp and inside where the CP's will be, at the armory if there is one.
  • *Why do you want to play this character?: I wanted to go for something unique. This idea popped into my head first, and I am going along with it. I decided to go as a quartermaster as I wanted to change up my playstyle, as usually I am a beatcop in other servers.

He seems to have been amalgamated into the horde of faceless officers and performs his duties without questions although some of his methods may be questionable. Although he doesn't shy away to taking a bribe or doing some dirty work on the side.

  • *Why do you want to play this character?: I've never really played a combine affiliated faction on Willard and want to try out Civil Protection during this event to test the waters and see if it's something I'll like and maybe I'll try to give it a show on the main server.

    • Yin Huang was born in a single-parent household in a rural town in China. His whole life leading up to the occupation of earth he lived in poverty. He attended public school and was bullied for not bringing lunch to school frequently and having old or dirty clothes. Even his teachers would make subtle remarks degrading him as a human throughout his education. He picked up a job at the local newspaper office when he was about 10, he used the small amounts of money he made from the job to chip in to help his father. He continued to live his life barely making it by until the Seven Hour war began; he was fourteen years old at the time. The combine destroyed civilization, established their regime, and then built it again. Since he was under the age of eighteen he was brought to the Echelon Facility in Belfast Ireland. There he began his education under the combine’s rule and watchful eye. He studied hard and was grateful for the opportunity he was given, he was no longer in a state of poverty or despair, and the only thing he missed was his father. He had food, clean clothes, a safe place to sleep, and even a medical office not too far away. While he continued his studies, usually graduating somewhat near the top of his class, around the age of sixteen-seventeen he specialized in the security wing of the Facility. He learned the basics of what it meant to serve the combine and how to maintain cohesion on earth, he didn’t graduate top of his class or with the highest marks so he wasn’t offered the gift or transhumanization but he was able to be sent to City Fifty-One to undergo Civil Protection training to start his new career within the universal union. He feels as if since the Union gave him all these things to be grateful for, he must serve them in some way and he took up a career in Civil Protection. After a year or two within the local Protection force, he is now a fully-fledged member of the Force.

--- Early life ---

Tai was the only child in a "Traditional" Chinese household, his parents raised him in an authoritarian manner, constantly imposing incredibly high standards on him and shaming him when he failed. Should Tai have gotten anything less than an A on his schoolwork, his parents would shame him for his failure, among other things.

This parenting method made Tai incredibly critical of himself, constantly attempting to improve in hopes of earning his parent's love. He never truly earned his parent's love, by the time he became the chairman of an accounting firm, his parents had already passed away.

Tai ran his company how his parents raised him; like a dictator. Anyone that underperformed was fired on the spot, this left only the very best in the company. Tai's methods helped the company thrive, but his actions ended up causing a number of suicides over the years.

--- Post Cascade ---

When the cascade tore the world apart, the Chinese government gathered the surviving population in a secured city center. Tai survived the years of the cascade in hiding, fearing that the employees he had treated terribly would use the chaotic situation to take revenge.

The Combine's liberation was a breath of fresh air for him, although cruel, the Combine brought order to the planet, something that had been missing ever since the cascade. It was bittersweet, while Tai had the safety he wanted under the Combine, he lacked the authority and power he once had, and he once again began to climb the career ladder.

After "The culling" in 2005, many positions in the administration opened up, Tai hastily applied for the position of Vice Administrator, hoping his skills in management would get him the job

    *Character Name: Nikolaus Volpis
*Character Role: Combine Civil Administration | Minister of Health
*Brief summary of the character: Italo-Russian Male, who got after many transfers around the world an opportunity in Asia, City 51. Not a Pleasant one, but one that might help his chances. He is Politically attached to his own Ideology "Volpism" which has many marks of Stalinism and Collective ideological, but other than that. He is Lawful Evil.

I honestly want to play someone in the Management position, who organize and leads. Perfect for the Character I am planning and to make him go into a more fitting setting, that he would be in the Combine Civil Administration Faction. Despite the Event being set in 2008. Nikolaus might turn up in C24, If he survives the Chinese hell.

Besides, I want to try out playing the CCA despite the High-PK risk it brings with it.

  • Full Backstory:
  • His Youth
The story of an Italian-Russian who calls himself "Nikolaus Volpis". Born in Kursk , who nevertheless received Italian citizenship through his Italian father and traveled back to Pisa directly after his birth and grew up there. His mother, who was Russian, called him Nikolaus, mixed with "Volpis" which was his father's surname. His father was a reservist and electronics technician, while his mother was an accountant. He had no siblings. He had been interested in history, philosophy and politics a little earlier. Politics in the sense of what makes Italy the way it is. At 15 he also started to join parties. What he joined was the Christian Democracy Youth Movement, which he became quite involved with. Despite his innovations and ideas, he had a good career somewhere if he continued to get involved there.

    Adulthood

But left the party in 1980 when he turned 20. He then committed himself to the military and made his career as a non-commissioned officer there and went into the reserve. There is not much that can be explained about his school days. He did his thing there and came out. But now forward to the real thing. One day he read the Communist Manifesto and admired it somewhere, as it suits his philosophical nature and curiosity. At the same time, he also despised them because it resembled Stalinism, which was also interesting. Since his mother's family suffered from hunger and oppression under Stalin in the 1920's, his family was very Orthodox. However, he puzzled himself 1 + 1 and began to puzzle his own ideology "Volpism" which, like the namesake, represents itself. But it should be a collective idea and Conservative ideas. He left this somewhere in his notes.

    The Combine
But after a long philosophizing there came a cruel thunder and a bright light during the day, which seemed impossible. He left the home with his wife and son and looked up. The portal storm happened, but no one knew what it was. Before you could find out what, however, it was too late. Earth has been invaded by an alien empire. He took his family and fled to a private bunker because he had himself made out of fear during the Cold War and was locked in it for the 7 hours. But when the surrender was declared, he left. He couldn't believe it, neither could his family, but it was just what it was. More recently, he was shipped on a work program to assist in rebuilding for the Combines Overlord. With that he sold himself. He didn't see his family again and it went through the years that he was transferred from City to City until he came to City 08.

    The Events leading up
Someone spoke to him, that was around 2006. "You there!" The Asian man said to him, "Yes?" returned also looked back as a man spoke. This one began, "I've been on a search with the Combine Civil Administration for City 51 to help the Chinese there manage their shit. I've taken the liberty of taking up their cause and have found nothing but good things in their files. Hence the offer , before we continue. I'm Matsumoto Tojo" Matsumoto said. Not in big reflection and in hope of higher authority and desire for his family he accepted it and was recently later taken to City 51 to help the population there and that's gone until today.. 2008.

    Present
Nikolaus wakes up, knowing City 51 is one of the most crowded City with Gang rising and falling and corruption spreading everywhere, even within the Administration. He gets notified by fellow Administrations Member, that the City is being cut off. "Cannot be" he said, before stumbling out of bed and preparing for the worst.

“加纳!对三项谋杀罪的罪犯进行审判”
Twas what he yelled. I knew my downfall was imminent. My felon mind couldn't have dreamed one's execution would be so fused with romantic rage. I’ remember the roar of the rats, reliven by my presence. Officers of the police had found of my deeds, and yet I was a free man. Twas valigents whom found me, sulking back to my residence, then in what was the blink of an eye. My execution was planned, and my sentence was to be delivered in an hour. Couriers were dispatched to spread information of the villainous felon, who had been captured.

Spreammers fell upon the street stone, from the apartments above as my name was harkened, and cursed by the mob. My blood ran ice, ice cold upon the realization there was no exit. My end was nigh, what was I to do? What was I to say? My mind ran blank. It felt as if the world slowed, twas this my time to escape? Twas this my time to continue living? No, utterly verboten. A sack slid over my face, the world turned black as pitch, and my senses dissimulated and the cries of the proles vaded. I was dead.

Instantaneously, a spike of pain tore through my scalp. I slowly dragged my eyes open, twas a mircale! There I layed, in the bed of a military base. My mind raced, as my cognitive abilities settled. It dawned upon me that I had experienced a nightmare. “哦谢天谢地” I coughed aloud, and flopped back below the covers of sleeping warmth.. Common as it was, the alien passes continued pouring from heaven. Sleep was but a dream of the past.

谋杀!谋杀!谋杀!

Twas shrieked through the block, blowing beyond the weak walls of the apartments, waking my tenant mates, including me. A level of annoyance irked us, and the dim lights from the roads below clicked on, breaking the blackness thick as pitch.. I bore witness to a collection of ‘Overwatch’ soldiers dash into an alleyway, and the night fell into silence once more. This sight was not original, crime was rampant in my district. Overwatch was unable, mayhaps, unwilling to secure the stability of the district.

In the night, black as pitch I harkened. A whisper, a rumor, a discussion hadn’t missed my hearing. So acute and powerful I could hear the slightest shuffle of clothing in the other room. Twas unsurprising the news reached me, of a ‘民事保护” made for policing.

I stirred in my sleep, the power, the unbridled power of this Protection Force filled my cognitive functions of romantic thoughts. All I needed, twas to wait for the call, the call for unquestioning authority to any whom simply signed away his soul.

<:: 请注意。二九三区的功能区。您所在地区缺乏指挥权。继续进行稳定-管辖-九,并准备命令处理。::>
The call came, and ended. The power was within my gloved fingers. Twas I lived in opulence, unquestioned and empowered. Life was more than acceptable, the thought dawned on me that it could be better. My targets could expand, my reach could extend. Oooh, the thought was more than great, it was glamorous, stupendous, mammothly beautiful! I had to take the position, twas my destiny.

Therefore this I wanted; this I want, I did; and I do the position was MINE. There was no applause, nay joy… I remain aware of my less than famous reputation, those around me, believed me a creep, a crazed madman in it for the killing. No! Twas not I could stand any longer, my power was greater, therefore I controlled their very lives! No, this show, this example of disrespect wouldn’t go on longer!

I acted. Praised, I was, and remain for rooting out the evil operations in our precinct. There remained one individual above me, one last step remained before total control. He needed to die.

“注意英雄二。满足推广要求。等级提升完成”

There stood and here I stand, the complete and unbridled power of this district. Any action I could commit, criminal or not, was unstopped by the masses, unstopped by the, rare, transhuman arm. My word was god; and final. There were no debts, nor discussion, my ears, more acute than ever. I prayed upon every sound, every word, every action was seen by me; this I did, and this I do. Twas then the day came, I whisper escaped from my ears rage, then another, then another, then another, then another, then another- THEN ANOTHER! The proles had found escape, and abused it.

I acted, I tried, my efforts failed, every action in vain.. Souls were rare, as my district turned into that of a ghostly town.. Days, weeks, months,, not a word, neither a sound to speak of. Twas my district that lay, ruined, desecrated and broken… Then, the terror came, the murders, the rapists and the bombers.. Resistance claimed my district, my cries and pleads for backup never came. I was abandoned.

I ran, twas nothing left, twas nothing to gain. My few assets remained, and I, ran. A god smiled as a neighboring district had found us, and rescue was secured.

“外星人”
My intention two commands remained, so therefore my power remained. Twas there I stood; and here I stand as a prosetyle, vargarent command in a district not of my own. A district already ruled, a district, which will soon be mine.

    THE BEGINNING

Whenu Ling. Born 1974 November 2nd in Beijing.
Whenu Ling was born, in a wealthy family under the Communist Party of China. His father Yuiao Ling a well respected Police Officer.
Whenu Ling was able to get away with more then he should've, even drugs. This was due to his Mother Jing Ling bribing people, that could well get him in serious trouble. Both in cash, and through other means. Whenu Ling learned Law School, ironically, and planned to follow his fathers steps in becoming a police officer, gaining a good friend named Quan Lao, a Vietnamese man who's wife was ethnic Chinese, they both knew one thing they wanted to do. Become powerful above all those below them, and to Whenu Ling. Becoming a Cop was the first step to doing so, joining the police in 96 at the age of 22, he abused his perks of being a cop under the PCP, he did this well and was encouraged by his higher up to keep doing it, as it got him paid as well. However, this would be cut short, as, both a blessing and a curse became onto him.

    THE INCIDENT
In 01-04 in China, the portal storms hit hard, hard and fast.. This was devastating for Whenu Ling, his dream of power was being destroyed. Or so he thought, still being a cop, he convinced a few of his officers that he would be in charge. And it worked, on the majority that is, making a little safe zone whilst still exploiting those below him. Finding out that some of the Vortigaunt species were docile, decided to enslave them, forcing them to construct defenses and power things, or it'd be their life, having about 10 Vortigaunt slaves under his belt, which would come in handy in the mere future. Whenu Ling found a Politician of the PCP who was an ex PLA Officer, whom of which he grew fond of, Zhāngjié Wang - his name was. Whenu Ling had a huge worry of the large Headcrab Zombie population in his safe zone under him, blocking it off instead of out right killing them.. Then the Combine came.

    LIBERATION OR SUBJUGATION?
Whenu Ling witnessed the absolute might of the Combine Army, both admired and terrified, Whenu Ling knew resistance would end in death. Whenu Ling willingly allowed the combine forces take his safe zone. Not in fear of dying, but as a way to perhaps gain power, or some sort of position of power to exploit the people. This didn't end 'exactly' like he thought it would, however it did give him a easy position in the Loyalty status, gaining better food and rights. In late 2007 December 26th he signed up for the Civil Protection force, and got in after a vouch from another unit who of which he knew and became friends with.

    This is his story.

"It is my will to join the Communist Party of China, uphold the Party's program, observe the..." Li's father shuffled out of the room as his son took the admission oath to the party before the flag. Zing Li, who had just turned eighteen, was becoming a full fledged member of the party. His devoted service to the Youth League and his father's former position as Wei Guoqing's deputy had scored Li a full party membership rather than the one-year probationary status. Zing Li had been born sometime in August of 1958 to the influential Zing family. The Zing family, based in Guangxi, had narrowly avoided several disasters. Li's father was targeted during the Guangxi massacre and the family was able to circumvent the purges of the Cultural Revolution and Xiaoping's Retributions due to their connection to Guoqing - The Chairman of the Region.

Two years after Zing Li's induction into the Party he found himself on the Fifth National People's Congress after several strings were pulled in the local and regional governments. Li would live in Beijing for the duration Fifth NPC, attending the occasional assembly but he primarily spent the period in the capital city building connections in the government. After a five year period in the Congress, Li returned to Guangxi upon the initation of the Sixth Congress and the conclusion of the Twelfth National Congress to serve as the Deputy Secretary of the Guangxi Autonomous Regional Committee.

Zing Li devoutly served as Deputy Secretary and a member of the Central Committee for another five years in Nanning, eventually meeting and marrying Haung Qiaoqiao in the city. The two would have a son in 1987. In 1988, as the Deputy Secretary of the Party in Guangxi, Li had been selected to fill in the position of Secretary of the region, after the former secretary, and his boss, Chen Huiguang had retired.

Upon filling the role of Secretary of the Guangxi Committee, Zing Li fully fledged out the goals he had set out as Deputy Secretary. Li had planned to industrialize Guangxi to catch up to the neighboring Guangdong Province, who would be benefiting from the upcoming transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong. Under Li's leadership, the southern areas of Chongzuo and Fangchenggang fully recovered from the fighting of the Sino-Vietnamese war and saw unprecedented growth in Nanning and other major commercial centers.
During the assembly of the 14th Politburo of the Communist Party of China in 1992, Zing Li was selected to serve on it due to the now prominence of the Guangxi Province. Zing Li served as one of the most influential men in the People's Republic for exactly nine years, when he was booted off the Politburo due to the waning power of the Eight Elders and the election of Hu Jintao as General Secretary of the Communist Party. Zing Li was placed as the Vice-Minister of the newly formed Ministry of Commerce. Li would continue his work with great pride for several years, slowly building his reputation and position back up under Hu Jintao. During his time in the Ministry of Commerce, China would see an extended period of economic growth into a world power.

In early 2002, with the cancellation of the 16th National Congress and the formation of the Ministry of Emergency Management due to the Portal Storm Crisis, Zing Li was chosen to serve in the Ministry and the response team. His diligent work in regards to the mass panics, riots, migrations, and fight against the encroaching Xenian Threat had led Li to be the defacto leader of the Ministry, his work continued until the Seven Hour War. In May of 2004 following the Seven Hour War, and the creation of Sol. 3 by Global Administrator Wallace Breen, Zing Li was chosen to serve on Sector Fourteen's Administration.

Zing Li, along with the rest of Sector Fourteen's Administration, gathered in Beijing following Unification Day. Li, an established member of the Chinese Government, served faithfully under Sector Administrator █. █████████ while also amassing power for himself. Following The Culling, Li himself was appointed to the position of City Administrator of City Fifty-One, having barely managed to escape the purge.

_________________

Zing as a Character:
Zing Li is an authoritarian by heart. His belief revolves around his leadership capabilities throughout his career, opting for a central and decisive power of one or a few men when it comes to executive decisions instead of a indecisive and ineffective democratic bureaucracy. However, his beliefs are still drawn towards 'Deng Xiaoping Theory' and Maoism in the sense that, as quoted from the PRC's Constitution, the State should still be a 'People's Democratic Dictatorship.' He still believes this to be true in relation to the Universal Union and the Board. Zing Li developed these beliefs partly due to his own work as Secretary of the Guangxi Province and his position as Vice-Ministry of Commerce and the effective system seem in the Politburo in which he served.

While also stating that he is an authoritarian, Li places himself towards a Socialist Status with Chinese characteristics on the economic scale. Li believes that the economy must be centrally controlled, unlike the semi-autonomous 'Worker's Union,' in order to better the state. His belief, in the modern day, is that an expansion on trade could better the Sector and city - An ideal clearly drawn from his time at the Ministry.

In the modern day, Zing is a pragmatic but corrupt City Administrator.

  • I have recently became an AUX unit on the main server, which gave me the chance to play as an officer in the slums, dealing with gangs and common thieves for a few days. It's a lot of fun and I would like to continue playing as a civil protection officer, as usually I only play citizens and anti-citizens.
  • Full Backstory:
Park Dong-Ha is the son of Mother Hye-jin Hangul and Father Chun-ho Dong-Ha, who also has a sibling sister, Ari Dong-Ha, who lives in Gamcheon-dong, a village near Busan. His father is an ordinary breadwinner of his family who is going through financial difficulties, which leads him to move to Boson to accept a job as a math teacher, where they, to who's surprise, experience the same difficulties, making the family live in very poor conditions. Park Dong was a very troubled child. Just at ten he had started helping local gangs traffic drugs to other city districts to help his family. His mother didn't accept the drug money and didn't approve of his actions, which led to him spending cash on unnecessary things. His mother eventually called her brother for help to discipline her child. Her brother was an army lieutenant. His mother's brother's name was Hajun Hang. Park had found a role model in Hajun than his father ever could have been, as he never had the time to care for his children.

  • Hajun had taught Park how to be responsible by helping him find a job in his early years. A lot had reflected onto Park from Hajun, so at the age of 18 Park Dong-Ha signs up for the police academy and makes it through the selection to work as a police officer. He managed to be assigned to the criminal investigation bureau, where he started to investigate major crimes like rape, drug traffic, fraud and also search for missing people. At the age of 23 Park had become an Inspector.

  • At the age of 24, the black mesa had decided to ruin his world. In the year 2001, he was just responding to a call to a drug trafficking incident when the news had been broadcast on the car radio. All citizens were forced to evacuate to military installations and bunkers provided by the government.

Eventually, the portal storm started hitting South Korea. Park had lost his sister who had been helping in a medical tent. She had been hit by a portal opening in the tent, killing her. He had moved into the bunker as advised by the previous government with his family to stay safe, using it as their new home for the next couple of years.
  • In the seven-hour war event, he had decided to protect his family and stay in an old bunker and wait it out. In the aftermath of the conflict, he and his family had been split by the combine into different cities. Park had been taken by local combine forces and questioned. In the questioning it became clear as what he had worked before. He had been given the choice to either work as an officer for the combine force or deal with the death of his family.

  • The union had decided early to involve citizens in the ranks of the combine, which had started the early civil protection officer program, where he had fit right in as his previous occupation was an officer in the criminal investigation bureau. He had a lot of issues at first with the protocols and the unethical treatment of people, but knew that if he didn't do what the combine wants, his family would die. He had accepted this as his reality and tried his best to go up the ranks to help his family, sacrificing his morals. After 3 years, he eventually reached the rank of i2, which came with a transfer to City 51.
He had learned to speak broken Chinese over the past year, making him able to speak to his colleagues who hadn't decided to use the now official union language. Park had been assigned as a quick response unit to local anti-citizen cells. His tagline is Quick-1.

Combine officials see City 51 as a lost cause and not worth the resources. Rank leaders and high-ranked command units have been transferred out of the city. Even though the city has fallen under the corrupt rule of gangs, Quick-1 had decided to stay disciplined as he was taught by his role model, continuing to follow protocol.

  • Tell us about yourself:
  • I have been a pretty active member of the community since the pre-beta release and have played in various factions already in my time here. My favorite is the bird faction as I can poop on people. I am known for playing the character Russell Makarov who is an old bastard that does anything to benefit himself by benefiting the union. My rather unknown characters are my Rebel char "Finn Fuchs", my alcoholic char "Bowie" and my domesticated bird named "Territorial Beast".

  • Are you new to Willard Networks?:
  • No, I have been here since Pre-beta

  • Are you familiar with anyone around Willard Networks?:
  • Yes, I am.

  • What's your favorite thing about Half Life?:
  • If we are just talking about the game, it's the gameplay, fun physics and atmosphere that made me replay the game multiple times in my childhood. It manages to tell a story without forcing us into long cutscenes and teaches us mechanics without the need of tutorials. Lore-wise, I enjoy it a lot too, as it is never fully known who we are fighting and who even gman is, which forces us to make up stories to fill the gaps, but in the end we don't know.. Basically, the mystery is awesome.

Character Role: CCA Member [De-Facto Minister of Commerce]

Brief summary of the character: An elderly member of Beijing's upper echelons of society. He was recently appointed to temporarily oversee Banking Clan 51, an organization tasked with overseeing the city's economy. An organization that managed to maintain its independence throughout the early era of the Combine's reign. Left vulnerable in the dangerous gang-controlled Beijing, he aligned himself with the Midnight Marauders.

Why do you want to play this character?
I like roleplaying as a member of the Administration. I believe the current year allows for more creativity in regards to the oppression / freedom during the early Combine reign. This character is essentially in charge of the economy. However, they're essentially a heavily corrupt pawn to the Midnight Marauders. An independent organization that's not "officially" apart of the Combine Civil Administration allows for more conflict to brew between the Administrator and their subordinates.

To clarify, Banking Clan 51 is intended to be an early rendition of the Ministry of Commerce currently present in 2018. Post-liberation with the establishment of the urban centers, the duty of the Credit Economy was hastily bestowed upon them. Numerous delays and the city's current state have prevented their full integration under the Administration's banner.

Full Backstory:

1665672601014.png

BEGINNINGS
Li Zuolin was born 1972 in the Liaoning Province of the People's Republic of China, a province that borders the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, better known as North Korea. His father, being an official of the PRC's Ministry of Commerce, often made trips to North Korea, bringing his family along with him for the most part, resulting in Zuolin learning Korean along the way, and having to be home schooled for his younger years by both his mother and father, though the parental-child relationship was strict, they never had many arguments.

His teenage years were a rather tumultuous time for Li, a placement at a prestigious school in the area due to his father's "Contributions" to the Party had left him a head start, more so than most. Said head start allowed him to make an eventual trip to Zhejiang's Police College in Hangzhou, pursuing an eventual career in Law Enforcement. His academic record was at best slightly above average, though his disciplinary record was poor due to Li consistently getting into heated debates with the teachers over certain "rules", often than not requiring his father to bail him out from suspension or expulsion.

1665673579625.png

TRACTION
His academic years ended with Zuolin eventually being placed within the People's Armed Police Force of China, a rather heavy-handed unit of the Police Force, meant to deal with Riots, Unrest, and sometimes employed at the hands of the Ministry of State Security. Though his service record remained largely adequate, and at the same time, de-sensitized him to tasks that would normally at least make someone feel a little bit shameful. It was an open secret that the Chinese Police oppress their own citizens as much as visiting outsiders. He dabbled here and there with corruption, as did most Chinese Officials at the time.

1665675373404.png

CLIMAX
2001, the sky turns unusually blue, and a huge vortex was present in the middle of the landscape, and Li woke to sirens blaring across the Armed Police barracks in Tianjin. Officers and Enlisted alike were running around, all in a panic. The evident sound of gunfire, artillery, aircraft, roared all across the City. Evacuations were placed almost immediately, the 'Important' individuals went first, clambering onto trucks to be sent off to secure locations. And Li, who was lucky enough to persuade his superior to place him as a guard on one of these trucks, was soon driven away from a burning skyline.

The next three years would see him evacuated to the Tianjin. A brief phone call revealed that his parents had been evacuated to Shenyang, and went he dismounted from the transport truck, he was met with the sight of angry rioters, demanding to be evacuated, to be included in "Priority Treatment", to be saved. Beijing had turned into a hub, the CCP had doubled down on the city and turned it into a last bastion. Where the countryside was devastated by Portal Storms, the Cities became the refuge of millions. And people were all clamoring for a ticket to Beijing.

1665675575520.png

TRIAL BY FIRE
The riots started almost immediately. The civilians acted exactly how the Evacuation Officials feared, they began rioting, each civilian attempting to place themselves before others in the race to get to safety. The lower rungs of the Army had started to become dissatisfied as well, as Command Officials frequently left them in the dark. This eventually left nothing but violence, as Loyalist Government Forces clashed with Rioters on a near daily basis. Hundreds being cut down by gunfire or makeshift weapons day by day, as Li was forced to join the fray and hold the horde back.

Tianjin had effectively descended into Civil War, gangs started to pop up, rioters, looters, insurgents, all ran rampant as war raged across. Two years passed, and bit by bit, Government Forces were eventually overwhelmed by the horde, outnumbering them by literal millions. Another evacuation started, and Li was shoved onto a train to Beijing, along with many of the remaining Government Troops, as they left Tianjin to its own fate.
1665675964868.png

DELIVERANCE
Li had arrived in Beijing and was immediately hauled off to become one of the many guards of the now Martial Law enforced City. Beijing was little better than Tianjin, but the influx of both forces and civilians alike from all sides had managed to keep the City in equilibrium.

The Combine however, cared not for equilibrium. New portals appeared on 2004, ones that spewed out objects instead of storms, ones that shot at them, killed them. The perimeters were overwhelmed and overrun almost immediately. Tanks that had been used as roadblocks and traffic directors quickly became burning husks. Aircraft that were in the air turned into scrap metal before they even touched the ground.

The Party had almost immediately surrendered, out of fear of their own safety rather than the safety of the City. This led to a systematic collapse of the People's Liberation Army, Ministry of State Security, Police Forces, and Militia. Surrenders occurred in droves, just as much as last stands did by Security Forces, along with desertions or disappearances of other forces as they ventured into the countryside.

1665676435339.png

OCCUPATION
Li was almost immediately thrown into an Internment Camp, prisoners being processed with brutal efficiency of the Combine, either being sent to the factories, sent to the unknown, or simply being killed on the spot. Li was lucky enough to be chosen for Labour Work, and later the Civil Protection program thanks to his service in the People's Armed Police, if anything because they told him that both his mother and father were alive and being "Supervised" at an unspecified location, the extra rations were a nice touch too. Li Zuolin's life ended there, and began the life of JURY-1.
1665676684205.png

PRESENT

Beijing has been abandoned by the Combine, eerily similar to how Government Forces had pulled out of Tianjin. The infamous triads are making a comeback and openly waging violence on the streets, claiming swathes of land for their own criminal enterprises, while the rebels and insurgents plot their next move, and the Administration scrambles for control. Time only tells what happens now.

  • Character Name: Chaa Hui'Seng 灰僧 "The Gray Monk"
  • Character Role: Free Vortigaunt
  • 1665983507283.png

    • Character Summary/Backstory:
    • A large figure emerges over the hill and into view. An immense alien creature, it stands on top of the hill outlined against the rising sun. The alien is cloaked in a bright, orange, threadbare robe of a Buddhist monk that contrasts the dark gray skin of an elder Vortigaunt. The cloak has been outfitted to support a hunting belt full of headcrabs as well as several different makeshift bags and satchels. The creature carries with it a walking stick of about seven feet in height, little more than a bamboo tree cut to length with the assistance of some razor sharp claws. After gazing across the landscape for a few minutes, the creature lifts its bamboo walking stick into the air. Suddenly, a green energy pulses through the bamboo and manifests into a sphere at the top of the stick. Once formed, the creature brings the stick back onto the ground, but the green sphere of energy remains in the air suspended above the alien. Within a few moments, additional figures emerge from houses and apartment buildings in the valley beneath the alien. They begin converging onto the hill, and before long a congregation has formed at the base of the hill. Without a word, the creature turns around and begins walking down the other side of the hill, followed by the thronging mass of humans and vortigaunts. In a short while, the group reaches an ancient Buddhist temple. The mass of humanoids amble toward the temple, entering quickly and taking a seat on the bare ground. The robed alien stands at the forefront of the gathering and proclaims in a guttural and booming voice,

"Close your eyes, and enter a state of right-mindfulness. Meditate and reflect! The Vortessence holds all wisdom and knowledge..."
  • 1665983574802.png
  • After the onset of the Resonance Cascade and the subsequent liberation of the vortigaunts, thousands of members of the species were scattered across Asia through portal storms, with many finding their way to the People's Republic of China. The communist government in charge was overwhelmed by the storms, as most governments were, and were hostile to all forms of alien life that came were teleported to Earth, including the humanoid and sapient vortigaunts. As a result, most vortigaunts fled to the rugged terrain outside of the cities, sticking to uncivilized portions of the Chinese countryside. During their hiding, they made contact with several small human villages, who were more or less receptive to the vortigaunts, mostly due to their proficiency in fending off the Xenian creatures that plagued the planet. Those humans who didn't flee to a fortified urban center attempted to make their own way in their ancestral villages, and the lucky ones had at least one vortigaunt to guide their defense efforts. In their dealings with the humans, the vortigaunts were exposed to Mahayana Buddhism, a religion/philosophy that holds various similarities with the spirituality that is associated with the Vortessence. Many vortigaunts decided to combine Buddhism and the Vortessence into a mesh between vortigaunt and human wisdom. And so, Vortal Buddhism was born.

During the occupation of the planet by the Combine, many followers of Vortal Buddhism, including both vortigaunts and humans, secluded themselves away from the watchful eye of Overwatch forces and constructed secret communes, which made up a small sect of the larger underground Resistance movement. Preaching asceticism, cooperation, and the restrained use of violence, most communes were dedicated toward humanitarian efforts of assisting refugees and providing assistance to the underground railroad, which funneled escapees from the newly constructed urban centers to various different Resistance hideouts and bases. In their free time, followers of Vortal Buddhism isolate themselves and meditate, attempting to access the immense knowledge of the Vortessence. With the assistance of the vortigaunt members, even humans have been able to experience a slight connection to the Vortessence. This melding of human and vortigaunt practices has resulted in a much more inclusive and egalitarian outlook toward human-vortigaunt relations, with some vortigaunts dedicating much of their time to teaching humans the ways of the Vortessence—admittedly with somewhat limited success.

With time, ideas from the Vortal Buddhist communes were disseminated to the various urban centers, creating a small following that practices their belief in secret, as all non-UU sanctioned religions/philosophies have been outlawed by this point. Followers within urban centers focus their efforts on providing assistance to the lowest members of society, as well as advocating for the peaceful cooperation between rival human gangs. In the midst of the massive amounts of corruption and violence that has plagued urbans centers such as Beijing, these followers have shone as a beacon of humanity in a dying world. Of course, many of the more violence-oriented gangs and organizations at work in the cities are apathetic toward the pacifist movement, and followers are often targets of harassment and extortion. However, while several non-violent tendencies from Buddhist teachings have indeed been retained in Vortal Buddhism, several ideas from the warrior-like species of the vortigaunts also have their place. As a result, preachers of Vortal Buddhism advocate against unnecessary violence, especially violence against the innocent. Violence in service of self-defense or against Combine forces is still completely acceptable.

Several leaders of the Vortal Buddhism movement have emerged across Asia. Most of them are humans, while a sizeable portion are vortigaunts. These leaders direct communes in the countryside as well as movements within the urban centers themselves. One such leader, Chaa Lu'Seng (a combination of the Vortigese word for "knowledge" as well as the Chinese words for "green monk"), has been active in the Beijing area, recruiting members and spreading the message of the movement to anyone who cares to listen. With the troubles that are manifesting in the coming days, The Green Monk faces a difficult road ahead. Will he and the movement be able to provide a viable alternative to the corruption and crime that has become endemic to the area, or will he and the movement be rendered extinct, exterminated by either the Combine or some rival gangs? The question remains unanswered for the moment.

  • Why do you want to play this character?:
Frankly, I think Vortigaunt RP has a wide variety of potential stories, many of which would not be possible without a concept such as the Vortessence. I always thought vortigaunts were an ineffably mysterious character within the Half Life universe, and such esoteric beings are vastly more intriguing than some Combine-hating rebel (or some UU-loving loyalist for that matter). During the course of this event, I'd like to be able to add something totally new to the lore of HL2 (to my knowledge such a blending of human and vortigaunt philosophies has never been given much thought and development lore-wise). Additionally, during the last event in Industrial 17 there was an overbearing amount of thoughtless corruption and greed. I'd like to make it so this event isn't more of the same, but rather carries some moralistic nuance. Will this movement be snuffed out in the first few days of the event or perhaps blossom into something unique and rewarding for all those who interact with it? I truly hope for the latter.

  • *Character Name: Yang Meng (i3 officer)
  • *Character Role: Civil Protection
  • *Brief summary of the character: A secret undercover gang member posing as a CP.
  • *Why do you want to play this character?: If this gets accepted, it would be my first CP character and I'm just wanting to get a hold of it before I get a real CP char on the main server. I also like the idea of an undercover CP during a city-wide rebellion and this surely will test myself.

  • Full Backstory:

    Life before

Yang was born to two Asian parents, who were very strict and wished to overthrow the government at the time, especially after what had happened in Tiananmen Square. That fuelled both his parents and him with rage, which is how he gained his 'rebellious' side of himself. As time went on, he became more and more familiar with weaponry and the likes... and then the Combine struck.

    THE SEVEN HOUR WAR

It was sudden and unexpected. Whatever those scientists did in Black Mesa, it certainly ruined Yang's plans along with inter-dimensional space freaks committing genocide, taking the lives of his family. He then proceeded to go hiding somewhere in now modern City 51, where he survived the war. After that, he went out. He blended in with the other civilians, observing the combine's operations.

    TODAY

Now, he finds himself alone and unprepared. He join the CPs as a undercover gang member. In his time being a CP, he has relayed classified information to several gangs and even has indirectly been the cause of some of his colleague's death. And when the gangs first start flooding the streets, it's his time to show his true colours.

    His fate is unknown..
