The Holland Tunnel
1927 saw the opening of the Holland Tunnel - a cut of road between Lower Manhattan to New Jersey. Slicing right through the Hudson River. The Holland Tunnel acted as an underground roadway/tunnel for those traveling between the two cities. It'd be an easy skip across, with the other way across being the Lincon Tunnel (Constructed in 1937) miles away). The Holland, as New Yorkers called it, was crucial if you wanted to travel to take the roads to New Jersey. At the time of its opening, the tunnel would've officially taken seven years to construct, and the cost - close to 700.000.000 in 2018's American Dollars. This nine-lane underground vehicular tunnel was crucial to travel. Needed for the cities it helped.

The Seven-Hour War

The Combine launch an invasion of the planet Earth - weapons, unseen before, with munitions that rain hell on anyone or anything in their way. Damage to cities, landscapes, and the earth overall is affected. Xen growth comes in, days after earth's surrender as the occupiers do what they can to claim cities and territory. They expand outward - only being able to grab what they're able to, leaving a majority of what they see 'useless' to their regime, unmaintained, whilst they prioritize the grabbing of resources (Both people and earth's minerals, oils, and so on). New York's version of the invasion was as seen in movies. With even the United Nation's headquarters - on 42nd - having taken damage as striders and soldiers pushed onto the streets after being dropped from technology unseen before. Explosions go off just as people try to flee the city, not knowing whether this was a war among people - World War Three - or a similar catastrophic event such as the September 11th attack of 2001. Regardless the streets were chaotic as people fled and the national guard tried to best follow the orders - only to be canon fodder, unmatched to the superrior combine tech'.

The Holland Canal
The Holland Tunnel was no more - taken out during The Seven Hour War. No one is able to pinpoint exactly how it fell, speculation (Pretty much all New Yorkers can do nowadays) says that a precision strike from their pre-occupied government blew a hole in the top end, causing flooding, leading to subsidence and then collapse. Others speculate the 'Combine' aimed to blow it up to prevent troop movements from Manhattan to Jersey. Both of these opinions are pushed - One by the city's loyalists who are brainwashed with the idea that their own government tried to keep them in to fight. The other by rebels who pushed the idea in the combine wouldn't even allow people to flee the city they were invading. Both push a harsh reality, one could be right. Both could be wrong. No-one knows.

Currently, the tunnel remains flooded. The lights are somehow powered this was seemingly at the same time the city started going through utility repairs once they went into the occupation - but that still won't help anyone wanting to travel through. Cars, semi-trailers, and general junk/debris are converged underneath the watcher, which reaches the full height of the tunnel (12.8 ft). The entryways on both the Manhattan and Jersey side of the tunnel are unmanned, with bio-restrictors, but growth and general mismanagement of the checkpoints make it easy to get in. Patrols sometimes go through the entryway areas - though not specifically for The Holland. The citizens now just refer to it as the 'Canal', 'The Holland Canal', with the only promising thing about it being some national guard and police vehicles, being nearby - for anyone hoping to get something they shouldn't have. Other than that. The Holland is now useless.
