The Amazon rainforest, a beautiful jungle of green and the most stunning colors, is also one of the deadliest places, with all of its mysteries hidden inside. The green hell.
This is one of the few places not yet completely taken by the hands of the Combine Empire or the Xenian creatures. Some say there are still uncontacted tribes deep within the jungle.
When the resonance cascade happened, it opened portals all over the world, devastating all places it went to. But of all the places it came across, the Amazon rainforest was one of the few that was able to contain the threat of these alien creatures, as the creatures coming from Xen all perished due to animals and elements even worse. The Xenian creatures managed to greatly disrupt the balance in the forest, causing significant damage by decimating various species.
One of the few creatures that managed somehow to settle in the forest were the Vortigaunts. When the Nihilanth was killed by Gordon Freeman and they were set free, they started to form groups within the forest, discovering this new world they were dropped into.
As the Combine invaded Earth, they came across the Amazon rainforest. They tried to invade a couple of cities within the forest, achieving some success, but when they realized the logistical problem it would be, plus it being a hotspot for rebels to hide and attack using guerrilla tactics, they pulled out to focus on other parts of the planet.
The Combine kept their eyes on this part of the planet, making a plan to wipe out the area without losing its plentiful and useful resources, a plan still in progress. They built stations and perimeters outside it as a form of controlling the area.
The lost city
The city of Manaus, once a big metropolitan area, is now almost consumed by the forest. When the Combine invasion happened, the people of Manaus were still weak from the Xenian invasion. As the Combine invaded the city, people either fled to the forest in groups or formed fortified neighborhoods. The fortified neighborhoods didn't take long to be broken by the Combine, and the remnants also escaped to the forest.
When they noticed the Combine had pulled out of the city, they came back, only to be met by roads infested with Xenian creatures, left behind by the Combine to avoid re-occupation of the city.
They fought against these creatures, liberating a few neighborhoods and then occupying them in large groups of people who survived the fight against the Xenian invasion, the Combine, and the reconquest.
These people then formed expeditions to recover resources from surrounding commercial and industrial areas as a means to survive a little longer.
After years and years, the city was almost entirely overgrown by the forest, and the resources had long since run out. The fight for survival every day wasn't easy. The groups started to merge as a means of survival, and they returned to almost medieval times, with technology being rare and found only occasionally.
They weren't able to make vaccines, remedies, or anything for healthcare. They had to resort to herbs when they had diseases. The food was cultivated in large fields using old technology, like scythes and many others. One of the few farm animals they still had were pigs, since it was difficult to take care of other animals.
The number of people dwindled since they weren't able to have children, but they still remained strong.
Even with the combine, there is still some places that found
