Juice Crabs, as the name suggests. Its abdomen is a lot like a Mosquito due to the fact it fills up with a Purple Liquid, that is very nutritious to both Vortigaunts, and Humans. The Juice Crab is roughly around the size of a Coconut Crab, but acts like a termite of sorts making large colonies deep underground or in high above areas, such as trees, abandoned buildings around 5 stories high or mountains. The combine tend to get rid of them, due to the fact they can chew their way through anything. Concrete, Wood, Brick, Rusted Metal, except for Combine Material and Higher Quality Metals and so fourth. As for the rebels? They keep them around, for very obvious reasons. If you squeeze their abdomen hard enough, it'll spill out the liquid for you to consume as long as you do not get bitten by it. They are slow, walking around the speed of a centipede, or the speed of a turtle when its abdomen is full.
Their appearance resembles a Tick, but far larger and more colorful. Its abdomen when not full of its Nutritious Juice, is a green at the end of the abdomen, but blue going towards its body, its body works like a Chameleon, despite its abdomen, it'll blend in with its environment to the best of its ability. The Green and Blue Abdomen was more suited for Xen, not earth but as of recent 2016 some of the 'Juice Crabs' abdomen have shown no colors. Combine Scientists have begun to study them, and potentially use them as a food source, all the while limiting their expansion as they are a general threat to infrastructure.
Their main home as of now is South America, thriving in the lush forests.. Or what remains of them that is. Some instances have been seen in Europe, but they are on the verge of total extinction in the region due to mass extermination. Thus, an act of 'Co-Existence' formed, the Juice Crabs found a way to live with the antlions for protection, in return they gave their Purple Nutrients for the Antlions to feed upon, currently only 2 Antlion Hives hold these Juice Crabs, their population in total is about 1200.
The Combine have attempted to extract the Juice Crabs Nutrients, however the requirements to have them produce such Nutrients took to long (roughly 2 weeks to be full), and to maintain as the Juice Crabs require specific conditions to thrive, mainly in small spaces like caves, large pipes, or dug outs the Juice Crabs made themselves, thus the project was abandoned. Mainly due to them escaping a bunch, and poisoning people it bit killing about 4 scientists.
How they appeared is interesting, their arrival on this planet was by total mistake due to how isolated these things normally are. A portal erupted, bringing about 300 Juice Crabs into the world, majority in South America and they wasted 0 time to try and make this new place home as quickly as possible in hopes of surviving this unknown and very hostile environment, the vortigaunts cherished and took care of the Juice Crabs as they made for a good food source when the time is right.
Current Day - The Population of the Juice Crabs is around 89.000, 87.000 in South America, 1200 or more in Europe. And 1000 in North America.
