I also don't remember them possessing superhuman strength in the games. Perhaps they are more fit than your average human, but not surpassing them in every way.

The very first vortigaunt you fight in Half Life 1 tears down a sealed metal door with his bare hands so this is the one thing where I feel like they have an actual basis for that claim.
