This is a bit of a hot-take, as I don't know the innards of the situation and I only know what some people have told me, but let me put up a huge goofy-ass rant for y'all. This is a minor complaint about a lack of IC action being taken toward the CWU/CMRU Factions, out of what I think is mostly just a fear of OOC Complaints from members of the faction. I'm not mad at all about any of this ofc LOL, I just felt like it gave me an excuse to write about what I want to see more from the faction I've been playing and LOVING for the past few weeks.

PICTURE THIS.

You're in North Korea. You work at the most famous hospital in Pyongyang. Kim Jong Un is at this hospital after an attempted assassination.

He is STABBED at the hospital by a doctor and KILLED. What would happen to the hospital workers who even KNEW the doctor at this hospital? Would they go on about their days? Would they be able to go back home and talk to friends and family?

As far as I know, the CMRU and CWU are still in much of the same spot as it is today after a member of it committed such a grievous affair. No high-value loyalists have been investigated or tried for corruption, no public executions and kangaroo courts, no huge sweeps (I'm not a JURY member so I wouldn't know about the investigations, but still, publicity yo) No fun, groundbreaking stuff that changes and effects what is popularly seen by many Civil Protection units and citizens alike as the most decadent, corrupt limb of City Twenty-Four's Industrial Zone.

Put simply, I wanna beat up more Civil Workers and Doctors. I wanna see CMRU members flee to the slums/sewers to avoid getting firing squad'ed in front of a live audience during a paranoia-driven purge. I want a brain-drain that'll make us ICly regret killing so many medical professionals. I want the lack of committed Civil Workers to cause machines to break and citizens to lose their hands in workshift machines. I wanna see chain-gangs and slave labor and I wanna see uprisings and people under pressure, entropy man! The Combine need to be untrustworthy, evil, irrational, and paranoid, and it'd be so much fun to be the bad guy in a situation like that.

Give me oppression or give me death! Thanks for reading, and have a nice day.

EDIT: YES, this could totally be solved ICly. I'm at work though so yelling on the forums is easier for me than bringing my laptop in and setting it in front of my desk to ask an RL the same thing

EDIT 2: I slightly regret putting a huge emphasis on death as it just makes me sound PK-hungry. After reading tons of feedback I still would love to see some actual consequences be brought against the Unions by Overwatch forces, but I'd also like to see a huge load taken off their IC/OOC shoulders in the form of a GRID-style Engineering Division being filled with metrocops who help with city-projects and allow them to focus more on workshifts than anything. I wanna see consequences that help stimulate RP and make it more fun, not just add more shit onto the un-fun gameplay loop they already got going on.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this, personally. For transparency's sake, I'm a member of CWU Management.

Lemme start this off by saying, if CWU were halted, beated, demoralised at every turn, then C13 would own C24 by now. The only reason the debt was paid off was because CWU grinded both OOC and IC to get as many credits as possible in order to pay off the debt. Furthermore, the only reason that Citizens and CPs ICly have food to eat, have maintained buildings, that the city wasn't lost to the infestation, is because CWU risked life and limb to ensure the City stays stable. Apprentices, sure, they're only CWU by technicality until they get the required training. But everyone from worker to management plays a crucial role in ensuring the City is kept afloat.

I'd also like to mention that in the past, when CWU had no protections and could be beat at any point on the whim of Civil Protection, burnout was constant. You'd be walking from the warehouse to a CWU /request or any other assigned job, and you'd be lucky if you hadn't been harassed or beat by a CP on the way there. This not only slows down work ICly, but also causes players to oftentimes have to stay on the server longer than they might've planned to. It happened to me constantly when I first joined CWU, and we've since worked hard liaising with FLs & politicking ICly to get us the protections we need so we're able to actually have some passive.

I cannot overstate this - last year when first starting out, there was zero opportunity for me to engage in any character development or passiveRP because the minute a cop saw I was a worker they'd assign & then force me to do a job that had little to no impact on the wider situation.

Now moving onto the recent fiasco with CMRU. CMRU =/= CWU, we're two completely separate factions that barely interact, and I've never worked as CMRU, so I can't state how burnout is there or how much 'free time' they get. All I can fairly say is that CWU had nothing to do with that incident. There have been times where CWU could've assassinated a high-level CCA official because there were no bodyguards around, but no worker has ever took that opportunity (At least, not to my knowledge)

CWU management who are in CWP or any other loyalist party do still get scrutiny from other loyalists however. This is fair, it's all part of the political game, almost a hazing ritual to assess their true loyalty.

Finally!

If a worker fucks up, they're still subject to punishment. If they fail to complete a assigned project in a fair timeframe, if they screw it up, or otherwise show behaviour that causes discourse/shows they're not loyal to the Union, then they can be subject to the usual punishments. In the end, CWU management can't punish even a i5 for being overzealous. The most they can do is go to MCP and report it, and it's up to MCP if they want to investigate.

Plus, if it's just a beating here and there, management aren't going to waste MCP's time. Management only raises issues to MCP when it's a repeat incident or when CWU was unable to complete a task due to overzealous punishments dished out by CPs.

Thankyou for coming to my Ted Talk.

This is a GREAT insight on the innards of how the Civil Workers Union is! Thanks, I actually really OOCly appreciate the Civil Workers' presence in all the things they do, and they're great fun to be around and RP with, but at the end of the day, the Combine kindof make Stalinist Russia look like a utopia. Civil Workers to the Combine are immensely replacable and all the work they do is just a side-show to the Combines' end-goal of absorbing all of Earths' resources and transhumanizing every worthy human into a fighter/worker for their expeditions to absorb and conquer new worlds. OOCly I understand a bit of mercy being given as I enjoy a lot of Civil Worker characters and think they're really fun to be around.

BUT, is that the kind of environment the Combine would ICly want to cultivate? Do they want fun? Do they want loyalists to live forever and be happy? Do they want people to have their work get celebrated and cherished outside of a few state-sponsored 'parties' with artificial food and beverages and medals made out of recycled car-parts? No, not at all, the Civil Worker's Union exists to hold the corpse of Earth still while Civil Protection and the (forced) citizens zip up the body-bag.

We all agreed to play Half Life 2 Roleplay, a universe where in some depictions, Earth lost 98% of its' population in a period of twenty years. The impermanence and lack of IC respect for every character is more than apparent, from Civil Protection Units being shot over small fuck-ups to citizens being nearly beat to death over being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Why should our characters change their IC attitudes for OOC reasons? I understand being burned out, but if you aren't willing to change up your roleplay to save your character from getting thrown on trial, your character should atleast feel comfortable with dealing with the consequences of trying to snuggle up to an alien-run dictatorship full of violent sickos.

I love the outside perspective though, if a person with a CMRU character or an administration/rank leader would like to comment, I'd love to respond and give my thoughts on the matter. My CP is just a lowly i5 so y'all definitely know more about the inner faction politics of the server than I do. Thanks for replying!

oppression is cool and all but you gotta do it right. it's gotta be tasteful. if you are just going around and pking people for "muh dystopia" then you will quickly discover that people will stop playing.

Oh yeah, definitely; random PKs and OOC disrespect are reasons for why servers like Shockcore and Aurawatch either went the way of the dodo or are constantly falling asleep and getting restarted. That crap is really lame to me even though it does make sense, who wants to deal with that?

If I had my way, I'd definitely pull some Great Purge-style Stalin/Maoist style struggle session events, with anyone from low-ranking citizens to high-tier loyalists and Civil Worker foremen being selected to 'prove' their loyalties to the Combine in front of a mass audience of every citizen the Civil Protection can gather off the streets. Then, depending on the trial, they're either exonerated, desecrated from their position and beaten, or if there's actual evidence of rebellion, publicly shot/hanged. We could even do this with underperforming Civil Protection Units or anyone else, because ATM the server just feels too chill to me. I don't get that feeling of adrenaline anymore when I'm around cops or if I see a Rank Leader as a low-ranking cop...I don't know if that's just me feeling accustomed because of how long I've played HL2RP or if its' legitimately feeling less oppressive.

I want some chaos in my roleplay experience, man! My black, corrupt heart needs it! 😂

so, would these death result in PKs? Like the example of the CWU doctor who killed an important person. Would you PK the entire CMRU because one guy did something? This just seems to be a way to just be more PK hungry. Also, the point of the server is fun, getting punished/killed for something you had no actual involvement in is not fun.

So, as a CMRU member involved in this, its not like this didn't impact us at all.

Without meta'ing pretty much anything, even now, there is some level of impact from this old thing. Whether the investigative side of things, or the relations that it also affected. At no point did we ever OOC intervene in this affair - CP's simply just didn't do anything drastic with it, which honestly may be for the best up to this point cause more long-term issues sprouted from the slow burn. So this had nothing to do with CMRU, this was just how CP's chose to deal with it.

As far as this stuff goes, there's just a point where you have to apply the brakes. I've had loads of hostile interactions with CP's Icly. Despite that, they've all actually been notably good simply because there wasn't some inherent drive present to throw the book at my character for the maximum punishment or whatever. There's lots of creativity present because there isn't some unit just waiting for the first technicality available to shoot her and be done with the whole thing.

This oppression business in RP is about the ebb and flow of things. Each side has to give and take a little to actually make it more fun. If CP's start acting like hardline canon HL2 cops, no citizen is even going to open their mouths outside.

Hell nah, I'm more in favor of something like that one series of scenes from The Hunger Games 2 where District 13 really gets the boot pressed on its' back. Anyone that fairly gets caught, admits to guilt, has some evidence to show for rebellious acts, etc. Should get PK'ed, just like a unit got selected for de-servicement (death) for the insubordinate act of talking back to a superior Officer or how a conscript got firing squadded for the simple crime of a fist-fight resulting from gambling. A public purge, some demotions, beatings, struggle sessions, imprisonments, and public execution for the worst of the worst offenders would be great, because the only real comfort in HL2RP is death. It should be chaotic, with non-lethal consequences being prioritized over lethal ones.

Even then, there should be no sweat. You can still make a new character. My baby girl Raquel almost got PK'ed by rebels in the goofiest scenario possible and I wasn't complaining to staff over it. She played around with fire, and in a Civil Workers' case, thinking you're safe and not running or hiding when someone in your department fucks up (or rather, several investigations prove that there are malignancies in the Civil Workers Organizations, I'm not just talking about the Consul's death here, though that is a big thing) is a testament to your characters' trust in the Combine, because in an irrational dystopia, the fun of it is having no trust at all for the system your OC is involved in.

When some shit goes down, I don't want my first thought to be "Eh, don't worry, the admins'll find some way to lessen my characters' consequences." I want it to be "Holy shit, my character has to FLEE, I GOTTA HIDE, I gotta THRIVE, I gotta make a new life for myself, I'm gonna be hunted, I gotta FIGHT......." Something along those lines. That's the fun of HL2RP for me. No one is safe.

Again, being demoted, killed, ext. for shit you did not actual do is not ok. Also, PKing is a big deal, it a loss of year of progress for some people. You also have to get that these factions need people to work, same with rebels. If you can just get killed or demoted on a cop players whim, then no one will play those factions let alone the server.

Oh yeah totally, I'm more just dissatisfied about the lack of the Civil Protection factions' response to everything. Everyone deserves a chance, but I feel like at the end of the day, a lot of cops are simply playing too nice out of OOC fear that the players will quit. IC oppression should inspire your OC to rebel and kick-ass, not get mad that you did everything that the combine said and they're still treating you like garbage and quit the server.

Again, thanks everyone for the responses, I'd love to read what more people have to say. I still consider myself out of the loop in terms of Willards' greater attitudes toward RP and I still hold a hardcore old-school view on things, so feel free to continue with the quality discourse!

You also don't need to go full hard oppression, people need to be allowed to do things like passive rp without CP constantly interjecting themselves, or a beating people. It the same reason why the slums/sewers exist, that are area where rebel can passive rp, and talk to each other with the constant fear of cop breaking down their door 24/7, or sweeping the sewers every 5 minutes.

Agreed, but some moments where the shit hits the fan would be nice.

I guess it's just a difference in perspective tbh! I've never had a HL2RP citizen last more than three months because mine always get killed, and I kindof enjoy that. I love a character like my latina chick Raquel, but I think it was good that she got nearly PK'ed, because it encouraged me to make a new OC and want to do more things since she got NLR'ed and lost all of her stuff instead. I basically considered her dead to me and I enjoyed that, because in my mind for my citizen to stay around for OOC years on end is crazy, don't these guys get transferred every few months?

My perspective doesn't factor into the reason I made this thread, being that we should totally look past OOC mercy and do some crazier, more dystopian shit, but I totally love the oppression of having to keep quiet around cops and other shit like that, but maybe that's because I'm crazy and dig dystopias where I feel insanely oppressed. Only gives me more of a reason to fight back. I almost force my OCs to have semi-knowledge that the combine are destroying Earth because without that, what reason do they have to revolt? Oh boo-hoo, the cops are mean and beat people at random...For an American or Western European character that'd be horrid, but all my characters are from third-world countries where that stuff already happens on a regular so I need something extra for them to be rebels lmao...That's just my personal perspective on HL2RP though and shouldn't factor in to my minor complaint for Willards's CPs as a whole.

at least for main, a character can be on the server for years, my current main character is a rebel that has been alive for almost 2 years. And i have taken many, many risks on said character. It just from my perceptive, i should choose those risks, not have them thrust upon me, especially when it relates to something i never had any involvement in.

CPs should be reactive antagonists not proactive. rebels blow something up, then they crack down. Same with the Combine as a whole, rebel should be initiating conflict, then the Combine factions react.

Yeah round them up and beat the shit out of them if they fuck around, Just lay those fuckers out - have the lowest ranking unit grab 1 worker randomly and make the others watch as that cop beats the worker either nearly to death or to death.

Give them a reason to want to resist.

Hello, CWU Lead here. I will respond to this in a few hours

I mean, we did reach a point where CPs would actually walk into the CWU and ask some random worker to make them something unimportant, or get PK'd and lose the character. That was a really bad problem.

Those thoughts still linger in some of the workers, memorially. It actively hurt the faction and its entertainment value due to how widepsread it became, than it had inspired fear from the Combine actively being portrayed as The Combine.

Yes I would prefer the Combine being more totalitarian but not actively genociding the CWU because some i5 - i3 came in and demanded that if they don't make some bullets for them or something, they get incinerated. It's not fun and makes playing the server a stress strain.
