The world map is one thing that brought a lot of us together. The idea to have a fresh, living world breathing with things to look into that links in with server and game lore with customised takes, where nothing will always be the same and is also highly player contributed. That's a first step I've wanted to achieve with an HL2RP community for a long time was to conglomerate ideas together. It marks a step for having a unified view to a degree, though ofcourse not everyone is a supporter of such - but it was a big step forward.
But one thing I see Half Life 2 Roleplay doing more than anything is leaving behind the City RP a bit. Many will say it's controversial, but I see City RP as the hub of all of what I said above, while things like Short Stories and episodic arcs on event servers or D&D like sessions with world map and such are the key future to how City RP is fundamentally shaped. Basically the way I see HL2RP is "do what ever the hell you want", though obviously there'll be definite challenge to overcome and with an obvious needed setting that differs from the norm.
Biggest problem is manpower, resources and the will for folks that actually want to put their time into it.
I had a character who was a Civil Protection unit who was a bit grizzly but deep down cared for the little people (he's PK'd now), I've got a French Overseer who's a French Hyper-Republican enthusiast from City Thirteen in Paris (still alive) and an alien grunt that got blown apart into smithereens due to a grenade (PK'd too.)
I've been playing the Serious RP environment since Catalyst Gaming in 2012 and watched it shift over the years. Though my best take is wanting to leave something worthwhile before, inevitably, we all move on with life and one day re-watch the memories of the things we took part in.
