Whats the difference between Willard and a standard HL2RP server?

New to the server and out of curiosity decided to hit the forums and ask what the difference is. I'm confused about skills and different starts - It seems an interesting way of doing things but just how radical is the change from other serious HL2RP servers of old? (Ie, like LemonPunch.)

Less minges. Thats about it.

The skill mechanics are similar to an RPG, and there's a few years of development behind the server.

It has big server syndrome, and that has its own set of pros and cons -- I'm sure you know what those are if you've played servers like LP in the past.

If I am to be brutally honest, the RP quality itself is somewhat below standard, simply because a sizable chunk of Willard players are very new to SeriousRP and came here because of the fresh mechanics (and the death of impulse). Your experience depends on who you interact with, though, of course.

Personally I found it that while the rp element out of combat is healthy and existant, in combat it just feels like they let TC decide PK's, which I feel should NOT be done. S2RP would be infinitely more interesting, and would allow people's characters to have way more satisfying ends than just dying because you are unable to do anything but stand still while ten billion combine flank you and shoot you.

This isn't really the discussion, but I just wanna say.

You should always have the chance to RP out your death, even if a fight in TBC decides that you have to die, being cock slapped by a fat charban the moment you bleed out sucks ass.

most things are kept IC and you can do mostly everything through IC means

(idk if there's other servers like that)

Well Willard is at its core an RPG rather than your defacto RP server that every other hl2rp is. Offering a wider variety of skills and leveling systems to define your character and its abilities rather than just having your attributes and very little info to base your characters design on. Also, rather than starting out as generic bluesuit number 242555, you actually get more customization options to your character than what some other hl2rp servers allow. Most servers run on default frameworks and thus have little customization available to their users while Willard continues to modify the framework to suit its needs.

Ontop of that, we utilize a special TBC system which stands for Turn Based Combat, something which you can't find on any other hl2rp servers. A new system developed back in 2019 after the 10000000's of discussions around S2RP, S2K and S2M. Since in the end all 3 of those has their flaws and TBC was a new system replace them. Of course, over time we have found a mix of S2K and TBC works best for the server mainly because TBC in large fights was a slog of a fight and thus far too slow. Faster than S2RP, but far slower than S2K fights.

Willard designs alot of its systems and gameplay around giving the player as much freedom as it can offer as most servers you normally have to rely on Admins to do pretty much anything simply because there is no simple UI for you to do anything yourself. Such as crafting an item. Normally if you want to make a pipe weapon in normal hl2rp you have to:
1. Check the server has such a weapon
2. RP finding the parts (Admin supervision required)
3. RP Creating the weapon (Admin Supervision required)
4. Spawn the weapon in (Admin only)
5. Use it in combat (Some servers need admin supervision for fights because ya know how players get when death is involved)

In Willard it changes to simply: Make it yourself with the materials and crafting UI, no admins required at any part of the process. Everything is findable pretty much and lots of items are craftable for ease of access. Willards core concept is to basically offer more power to the players vs needing staff to hold your hand like some other hl2rp servers seem so fond of.

Think that is pretty much all I can think of thus far.

Every community is original in its own way. When you say Hl2rp it can mean hl2rp from 2007 or hl2rp from 2022. There is no default, standard or you name it way of organizing a hl2rp community. We have heavily modified IX for example, our own factions, community, and way of roleplaying that gives everyone a chance to be a part of something. However, besides the whole "originality", this community was planned years before it was even in beta, and almost all mistakes of a usual hl2rp have been fixed, let alone the work and effort put in to make a server as we see it today. I hope I answered your question.

I guess I was used to S2RP being the dominant method to decide character deaths. Oh well, I'll have to adapt.

Its one of the few good servers that still operates that is public and generally higher standard of quality than most servers out right now. Not to say that Willard is perfect, and not to say all Public Communities or even Private Communities are bad. Willard just happens to have very poor competition at the moment.

Its also RPG-based rather than RP based. Which is way more honest than most HL2RP servers are about. Though if you were to compare it to other communities, that's when people disagree. There's no such thing as a Standard HL2RP Server since nowadays almost all of them have a specific niche to them.

You've got WN HL2RPG with RP ranging from very awful to decent.
You've got Nebulous which is pretty much a ForumRP community at this point. But they had some circlejerks back when they were alive with RP ranging from very awful to over-the-top yet decent.
I heard Cataclysm is either okay or bad depending on who you ask. I don't know if its good personally but when I played it it was a typical HL2RP server experience.
And everyone else is not really worth mentioning because they don't gather enough players anymore, dead, in development or are private servers and generally whitelisted.

But yeah, to answer your question. There's no such thing as a Standard HL2RP Server anymore. This ain't cloud sixteen or the heyday of Helix.

S2RP = Hour long scenario of arguing over what’s fair.

TBC may not be perfect but it is far better that the hell hole that is S2RP engagements.

I get that aspect, but I mainly just meant that dying in TBC just feels anticlimactic.

quite simply:

pro's:

- Good skill-based system, rewards commitment
- generally good people
- Active people in important roles.
- relatively decent Rp
- really quite inclusive and generous acceptance of character auth's

Cons:

- somewhat archaic PK rules, not awful but very broad spectrum and in need of a rework
- faction bias (this is in every server though, more a staple and constant of HL2RP than a con tbh, it's just not very good)

Additional observations:

- BMD is somewhat mediocre and needs improvement.
EDIT: BMD is significantly better now, it is still a bit rocky and stuff needs to be changed but it is now a more player driven role and economy
- Server is Roleplay centric with Script support, you will get situations in the server where no scripts are needed for a good Rp bit and vice versa, people who argue vehemently for one or the other are typically good at one and awful at the other and dislike the meshing of the two

PK is a thing and it is fucking awful, as it Punishes risky plays and being a rebel
I assume you come from either DarkRP, Impulse or an equivalent to it.

PK's are a part of HL2RP since the dawn of the gamemode, if you do not get punished for making risky plays and failing, you can just do it again, and again, and again... It would be chaos.

SeriousRP after all promotes creative roleplay and thinking rationally before going in guns blazing, there's been plenty of risky plays from rebels where they all survived, it depends on how you play
