Why RebelRP is dead and will always be.

I think what people miss when the argue the "there's no reason to resist!!" angle is an understanding of why the Combine's occupation works in HL2.

There are no heavily armed rebels in the sewers five feet away from the main road killing cops every day. There are no slums filled with armed criminal gangs. Your average citizen has not seen a rebel in 20 years. They are not going to be able to blindly wander across half of the city filled with scanners, cameras, patrols and checkpoints where they could be picked up and beaten or killed. They are not going to want to do any of that either.

They have one life just like us and are not in a video game in-universe.

You have no way to mimic this in HL2RP at all.

So yes, the Combine are a bit softer and less brutal for the sake of RP in an RP server. That's a given. It doesn't mean there's no reason to resist.

...Oh wait, no, that's a knife in your chest. Some guy saw your armband and decided to off you. What a shame, I guess that "profiling one's actions as someone else's" thing was actually a case of foreshadowing. You just got Alex Weaver'd. Serves you right for going into the slums with your fancy clothes...

TL;DR: Don't blame loyalists for not liking Rebels when said Rebels don't do anything to be liked, especially compared to Willard's version of the Combine, which is basically miles less oppressive than their vanilla HL2 counterpart.
My god, This.

Many slummers hate all loyalists by default. Loyalists genuinely require a degree of either IC or OOC masochism while attempting to establish a dialogue with most underclass types, be it slummers or rebels. I don't really care about this, as if your character is the kind of person to literally foam at the mouth at the mere sight of an armband, well that's your character. However, all the same you have to appreciate that loyalists have loads to lose just by making an attempt like that.

Unlike rebels taking similar risks, a loyalist has zero options of self-defense of hiding. Anytime you approach the underclass you are essentially just putting your life in the hands of other players OOC. There is roughly a 20% chance they will just kill you on the spot. There is a 50% chance they'll berate you, beat you or rob you. Even if you manage to succeed you draw the attention of the Combine just by doing it, regardless of your intentions.

At the end of the day, its just how characters are played. But, due to that, rebels have to realize that as of now there is essentially zero reason to support them. More than a few rebels are abrasive, gas-mask wearing, gun-slinging, sociopaths that revel any chance they get to abuse those weaker than themselves in the vein notion of some 'greater good'

Reminds you of another group, does it not? :angrycop:
doesn't apply to all, or probably even most of the underclass types, but has historically applied enough that its the most notable stigma they have gained both IC and OOC
That is the sad truth indeed.

All I can really say is to make the best out of it till V3 arrives.

I dunno... even in willard, civil protection actively cleanse mentally and physically disabled people from their population by shooting them in the head, the combine are genociding all of humanity in a single generation by stopping reproduction, they're expropriating all of the planet's resources to a foreign invading force, you cannot live with your family and getting discovered means you're forcibly broken apart (if you're lucky).

They're also genetically engineering dangerous fauna to use as biological weapons against the populace; they're actively sanitizing all non-english speaking cultures by criminalizing foreign language; they have stripped labor of all power and stolen the value they produce; they scoop out your organs and eyes and cut off your hands and feet if you resist their will

I could probably go on

ICly, half of these things don't happen due to gameplay reasons, while the other is usually hidden from the populace. Yes, CPs are obliged to "dispose" of mentally and physically unfit people, but usually this is done by sending them off to a special medical facility away from the City, so the populace wouldn't have any idea. This is how it was done in V4 most of the time, but unfortunately we don't have a train on the current map, which only leaves the trusty murder alleyways as your way of taking care of "unfit" people.

The suppression field and its consequences, as I mentioned before, are pretty much never even mentioned by anybody within the City, although yes, it should generally be a pretty big concern. As for the resources, ICly this doesn't affect anyone. The only time I think it could have ever played part was the murky toxic ocean water and the poisonous gas in i17. That's about the only negative result of Combine's resource harvesting that was shown in Willard.

The family part is also not exactly true. Recently, we found two people who confirmed themselves to be siblings ICly. They were both allowed to stay, which, granted, was mostly an OOC reason, but it still flows into IC. I personally never remember the Combine using bioweapons against the populace as well, except perhaps the Foul in i17, and then again, pretty much nobody knew it was actually Combine's doing and not a natural phenomenon.

Foreign languages aren't criminalized as heavily as one might think, considering I've seen at least 3 CCA characters who had extreme trouble speaking English and had to be communicated with their native languages. As for the scooping out the organs and eyes, the Combine have never, from my experience on the server, grabbed random people to transhumanise or stalkerise - the only IC ways of achieving the former is applying voluntarily in CP/OSF, latter might as well happen once a blue moon, and only to absolutely notorious Rebels when someone is feeling like a sadistic bastard that time of the day.

I'm not trying to say the Combine are the best and nobody has a reason to resist against them. What I am saying is that Willard's Combine are lax enough for post people to never be tripped over the metaphorical line. The general person, the average John Doe, could care less about all of the atrocities the Combine commit until it directly affects him. And, coincidentally, they usually never do.

Did you people miss the giant graffiti talking about it all over RDC? and the city lol

In the context of the actual setting, being "tipped over the line" doesn't matter tbf.

Contrary to what a lot of roleplayers think, living under the threat of constant abuse and violence doesn't tend to make you step out of line. It makes you keep your head down to avoid an angry cop robbing what little you own or beating you to death by "accident". Sure, you're likely quietly sympathetic to any Resistance movement that may exist but only a handful will likely actually try and act on it.

And even then your average angry or frustrated citizen isn't going to know where the fuck to go to get in contact with The Resistance and almost none of them will risk end up trying anyway. They'll stew in silence in their housing blocks, nothing else.

Plus, honestly? Most of the "uber hardcore!!!" stuff the Combine could do are absolutely terrible for roleplay, which is why they're not done anymore.

Let me tell you a story

I spotted a nobody wearing a jacket restricted to Collaborator Tier 4+'s and confronted her about it. I was willing to just hand wave any responsibility they had because the CWU/DOB and CCA refuse to actually document its restricted nature outside of a 6 month old discord announcement everyone and their mother could have overlooked. Instead of them just handing this jacket over and conspiring behind the scenes to see my character dead for the inconvenience, they decided to refuse and then sprinted away to the slums upon seeing me slowly take out a request device.

I later told them they had five minutes to come to the Community Centre or there would be consequences. This would have likely resulted in a beating by Civil Protection, your standard stuff. Instead of doing this they decided to go scorched Earth, revealing they may have (potentially) been an arsonist, then going on a tirade against the Combine over the radio, even handing it over to someone else so they can mass-leak IMS doccuments. Then this character decides it is the perfect opportunity to attack Civil Protection and I'm to presume they are now dead.

This person destroyed their life over a coat dispute. Went from 1 to a 100 very quickly.

I liked when a loyalist gave me a T4 coat and the fact that it was restricted was completely forgotten and the entire time I wore it I constantly got talked to by CP’s about it until I just gave it back

jackets are srs business

being full of drip in a dystopian universe is a privilege, not a right, and must be defended with your very life

that man knew this and fought to the bitter end to keep his drip; any cowards who surrender their drip deserve to stay a dirty, blue suit gnome
