The reason "plusgood" and "doubleplusgood" work to diminish thought is through reductionism. It prevents the masses from thinking for themselves. Think of all the different degrees of good and the ways you might describe them; there will be thousands of degrees; but the aim of Newspeak is to reduce the number of degrees; to create as few meanings as possible (just doublegood and doubleplusgood); the process is aimed at controlling thinking; reducing the power of speech; neutering the masses.

Doublegood and doubleplusgood give two vague, subjective degrees of meaning; if people accept that these are the only two possible ways of perceiving good, other ways are lost and other points of view are ignored; even treated as insane; like saying we know blue is a colour, so we don't need other colours or words for colour; then we lose the rest of the spectrum. Reduction of the lexicon is aimed at shrinking thought capacity; ultimately to try to stop the masses (customarily idle thinkers) from thinking for themselves; because this would undermine totalitarianism.
