Info Is Willard Dying?

Not open for further replies.
Normally I'd say 'yes, it's fucking crashing', but I wouldn't say that's the right terminology.

It's more like it's... changing in a way I don't necessarily like, and that most players will not. It's becoming a lot like Nebulous. From here on, many of the players who join will simply be cycled out for other players. People will pass by, try it from time to time, go back to the servers they main. It'll be a solid contester for highest player count.

But to be honest, that's... not something you can really brag about. Other servers will go on, almost unaffected by us. So would you rather a server die, or live but have most of its dedicated playerbase be cycling in and out of interest?

Hopefully the management makes good choices and we don't have to fall down either of those pits. I don't necessarily want this server to develop a soulless playerbase, or an empty one. Going the way of Nebulous is worse than going the way of Undetermined.

Me and Mendel and a few other guys are working on it and have a potential idea, though I can sympathise with your outlook.

Here's my main concerns that come from all of this though:

1. Terminal Six because that went "super-ultra-mega well".
2. Main map choice is very ill-suited for any city roleplay server and brought a lot of problems on its own.
3. Too much of an expectancy in regarding specific ingame systems / elimination of core roleplay fundamentals.

Yet the current stigma stems from this in its entirety: The 27th December Launch. A handful of people both in the team, in the playerbase and including myself always argued it was too early, same can be stated with my peers who I've recently spoken to, but here's one way of putting it;

Is the community dying? No.
But is it in a hard spot with a steep curve? Yes.

Why is that? Pretty much everything that can be virtually argued since the date of the 27th. The red flags were there, from the point of the first delay... but I think without the "launch" then regardless of time, this would have all hit us in the face so either way - better now than never. Everyone including me would rather play a server with twenty people knowing it's stable than seventy where it flails all its arms about maniacally like an octopus. As far as there's any general and mainline concern, Willard needs a very hard reality check and it needs to recheck everything from the ground up.

Individuals may question as to "what the next plan or step would be?" Well, depending on how well a rather specific conversation goes tomorrow afternoon, that'll decide it. But overall I'll try to answer your questions here, in my DMs or through forum private messages.

Aside from that and this is a bit off topic - there's one thing I can't make sense of and it's that HL2RP has got this complex of "I need to beat you / be better than you"... worst thing about this gamemode and if there's any place that is founded upon that alone, then there's no hope for it. Gladly, this is not the case. It's just a game that you can buy for £6.99 on steam.

We'll figure something out.

EDIT: btw it's 3:00am and I can't type nor formulate a great structure of sentences better than a monkey can. But hey, at least we got there. :P

The way it was advertised, Willard was supposed to be a roleplay server that incorporated RPG elements to create an RP environment worthy of taking down the inherent corruption within the now-dying nebulous.cloud.

Right now, I've seen too much RPG, not enough roleplay. We can easily resolve that, but we're trying to force the herds rather than incorporate the individuals. We're hardening the skills rather than softening them. We're PKing giant swarms of actual rebel RPers and then wondering why there are only bandits, knowing damn well the bandits just charswapped before the judgment waivers started. Progress is only rewarded through incredible effort, and if a single undesirable puts in that effort, the threshold goes higher.

It's the management. The narrow mindedness, the hollow systems, the shallow playerbase.

We can fix that. I just want to know why we haven't.

I would just like to say, I don't like the state of Rebel Roleplay at the moment. But any staff member who acts like these players are being stupid or toxic to the server have to remember that the reason these players act this way is because the schema and ruleset allowed it, in fact it promoted it. If you show players that grinding is how you progress, don't complain when players grind for resources. If you show players that the sewers are generally safe, don't be suprised when they got annoyed by you stomping on the underground. If you give low risk high reward events and an atmosphere or positive progress, don't be suprised when everyone refuses to play in the high risk no reward environment that you're making for this map change.

The systems in place promote a toxic environment that is antithetical to roleplay, and these are fundamentally flawed. I've said it before, the entire system needed to be thrown out and tried again. That wasn't the only option, but I think it was the best - the problem is that it required a staff team with a unified vision on what the server should be, and that same staff team to have the authority (or the guts to make their own authority) to adopt this vision. Instead, we have a weak period of constant compromises and half measures to get closer to appeasing everyone - and then when the players said 'this is not enough', staff act as though the minor changes they've made entitle them to praise and forgiveness. I understand you've been working hard on this, but that doesn't mean that you've been working in the right way. Pushing the rock up the hill doesn't get you anywhere, there needs to be a serious rethinking of how to approach these problems.

As much as I feel vindicated that the talks of a relaunch have had more traction and are now be taking seriously, to be honest, I think it's too late. It's been too late for a while, which is why I generally stopped pushing it. You opted for incremental change and tried to compromise and make everyone happy, but you just maintained the same fundamental issues with a few minor improvements here and there - and no one came out happy. There is no unified vision for what the server is, I do not see the kind of HL2:RP you're trying to present. It seems like you want a server up for the sake of having a server up, and by making that the goal you've failed.

What type of community, and server is Willard? Someone has to make a decision, and then everyone either gets behind them or is removed from a position of power. And if the decision you make isn't to my liking, I probably won't play - but a group of people will, and you'll at least having something.

I'm not sure what you meant by this, considering nebulous.cloud is topping the charts and, while it may be hyperbolic, killing Willard. Also, corruption? Didn't it spawn from Lemonpunch, a community with shit-tons of corruption? I thought they wanted to move away from that.

lol

Here's the thing, whenever someone mentions RPG systems in this community they are usually thinking about things like Skyrim/Fallout/Etc
This mindset is so antithetical to roleplay and the script's skill system currently screams it.

Let me give a very simple contrast between a RPG system today and a Traditional RPG system.

RPG: If I raise my barter skill to 50, I get 50% off!!!!
PnP: If I raise my barter skill to 6, I have a higher chance of getting success and also have the chance to make a argument to the DM through roleplay that may give me a benefit regarding bonuses / success amount.

The writing is on the wall, which one is better for rp in general? It's very obvious. This is how Willard missed the mark- this is why Lead Game Designers exist. Wanna' learn how to have a good system? Put down the controller and pick up a piece of paper and a pencil and get together with some friends for a change.

Spend 10 minutes developing a character, designing their history, where they came from. Spend another 10 minutes getting down what they are good at, where they are weak and where they are strong. Now play your character and let the DM craft a story infront of you as you interact with it.

You can very quickly discover who is a shit DM just like you can discover who is a Shit Admin in Garrysmod Roleplay because the crossover is incredible. You can also learn very quickly how to make a GOOD event chain through DMing.

How does it cross over?

-Well, very simply. "You enter a large cold dusty tomb, tomes line the wall as a faint fickle light glows in the North-Eastern corner of the room. Before you a pale elderly man sits cross legged upon a Alter as he echoes the words

"Ç̵̟̝̙͔̘̟̹̖̺͓͕̾͒̇̆͒t̷̨̬́̇̃̇̎̓̎̏̇̿̂͗̏͝͠ͅh̷̢̢̫̩̰͔̬̲͇̦̭̲̀̓́̓͗͜ͅư̶̗̪̼̹̪͉͙͍͚͋͒̈́̉̓̐͘͜ͅļ̵̢̡̛̟͎̻̥͈̳̺̟̖͎̙̓̑̃̽̑͗͑̅͂̋͘̚͘͝u̵͕̜͙̖͇͕͆͛ ̷̠̟͇͕͓͎̰̯̫̟͕̞͊̀̋͒̐̚ć̸̡̨͎͖̤͔̱̩̼̏̇́͐̌̂̋̈́͌͘͜͝ỏ̸̫͙͎̈́̆͑̃̏͆̀͘̕͘͠͝m̵̡̢̡̞͔̳̯̭͖̩̫̘͋̽͆͆̀̄̕e̷͚̋͒̀͋̍̓͋̓̽͂̋̽s̶̡̧̢̭̭͎̜̈̽͛͐͗̔͘͘!̵͓͓͔̍̃̑̽̆́͝ ̶̡̛̩̘̝̗̤͌͐͊͆̒̐̂̄̀̕͝͠C̶̢͖̙̭̺͈̟̙̑̔̔͜ͅͅt̵̺̲̮̱̎̀̌ḧ̶̢̗̙̪̫̮̠̖́̅̄̑̋̊̇͝ư̷̢̤̫̙͈̘̮̼͎͕͆͗̒͂̈́̋̓̈́͋͜ͅḷ̵̛̼͎̒̃̾̾̀̄̽ủ̸̞͇̙͕͓͙̱̼̣̂̾́͝ ̴̡̩͉̳͎͈̣́̓̽̄̂̌̾́̓̃̊̓̚̚W̵̡̨̠̠̠̙͑͑̌̔̂͌͐͌̋̐́̽͘͘ͅä̵̡̨̰̟͕̘́̐̇͂t̵̛̲̫̰̪͖̰̙́́̎̍͒͐̈́̆̒͛̄̚͜c̵̡̢̛̘̪͈̱͖̞̘͚̰̟̝̓͛́̂̓̇͆̇͌̾̽̀h̴̨̨͙̤̬̳̞̹͑̔̈́̀͜e̸̛̜̬̠͈̱̱̪͓̮̯̫͋̋͝ş̵̫͔͕̦͒̎͗̀̽̂̏͂͒̾͌͘̚͝͠!̸̢͉̠̭͚̯͌͋͒̈͋̾͐̈́͋͘͘̚̚ ̵̛̣̖̄̓́̈͆̊͌̔̿̚ ̷̨̭̮̱̹̣̈́͗̈͂̆͐̃̽̕ͅḄ̶̫̱̭̥̈́̎̆́̈̆͑͊̾̍̕͜͝e̶̬̼͉̠̬͔̙̟͇̤̮̔͗̓̿͋̀͛̅̑̽̄͆͜h̶̬̕ȏ̷̢̧̡̢̰̟̻̫̼̌̇̉̇̾͛͒͋̂̔̅̚̕͝ļ̵̟̠͌d̶̡̥͚͕̬̦̙̲̼̩̥̝̠̿͌̿͒͋̈́̀͆̕̚̕͝ ̵̧̺̯̩̥̳̮̩̆̆͒̊͗͝͝t̸̨̨̢̪͉͖̺̞͍̳̘͎̬̤̫͐́͂̿͗͆̈́̀̔̚͠h̴̙̎̀͊͂̌̽̕ẻ̸̩̮̣̺̺̭̗̗̎͊̓̌̌̎̕ͅ ̵̡͖̼̫̬͙͚̥͖̠͓͗̇̔͆̄͆́͆́͌̎͝ͅͅd̸̦̼̯̥̋̐͊̄͜e̸̱̋̈́͒̒̒̏̑̾̊̈́̎̒̈́̚e̸̯̹̭͇̮̼͆̆p̵̧̳̝͇͔̩͇̫̰̪̾,̸̨̱̱̺͚̗͉̝̹̲͙͈̃͌̃̈́͗̇͒̓͒ ̴̢̨̛̱̫̲̗̘͓̦͚̟̱̪́̃͆̀b̶̝͓̣͕̜͖̦̬͂̇͊͋͜ẽ̸̡̢̻̮̻̥̭̱͇̦̻̦̜̉̿̒́͂̀̚͠h̸̩͓̮̝̱̺͕̀̓̽̂̅̇͗̀̍̿̎̚o̸̪̺̗̗̼̹̝͈̺͒͜l̴̨̪̥̯̮̠̜̩̭͖̟͙̺̲̀̉̈̿̃͆͘͝ͅd̷̥̳̖̗̯̞̋͊̊̐͘ ̶̩͍̻͉͙͓̪̣͓̻͙̗̅̀̀͑̋̐̈́̕ͅt̶͈̝̣̳̤̩͓̩̩̯͉̜̀̐̋̑̀͠͝h̷̨̡̢͓̪̤͉̺̹̥̯͔̰̓́̀̋̎̋̂̎̕̕͠ͅe̵̜͉̒͂̊̆̈́̌̈͐͗́̈́͘͝͝͝ ̷̢̩̄̅̐̋̌̿͂̄́d̴͎̯̬͙͍̣͙̎̑͋̅̏̏̅̑́̾̔̈͝͠ę̴̞̳̟̠̖͚͔̬̈̓͋̑̌̃̈́̌̄̆̓͘͝͠͝ě̴̡̱̱̖p̴̩̰͎̑̽̅̊̌̈́̂̄̓̂̔̆̅ͅ!̵̧̨̼̜̺̤̯͎̳̥̳̮̮̹̏̍̒̾̌̈͆́̔͋͌͊̄͠""

Whilst in contrast a worse DM would say something along the lines of- "You enter a big room inside the tomb, a old man is sitting on a alter and saying stuff."

This is how in general most PnP games go, it follows the exact means to which a Garrysmod event coordinator operates and it translates in a myriad of other ways such as knowing properly how to scale the enemies, reward loot, etc. These are all very important skills a good event coordinator on Gmod should know.

Yet- no one in this community seems to understand it, what a shame.

Thanks for coming to my Ted-X talk.

Watch that series if you're genuinely interested in this shit, you'll learn some really important fundementals to making a good event that people can enjoy if you can use your brain in a interesting context for a moment. (Series gets better and better btw, it's also everyones first time playing.)

I'll be honest here, I haven't been on server after like, Day 5 or so simply because the people I'd play with lost interest after dealing with too much poor decision making and unprofessionalism. However, I've come to say that I really wished that Willard and higher staff wasn't so focused on development (aside from the smuggling system, a poor choice for fueling rebels in the first place). Plenty of these issues does come from the map, and I was rather disappointed that Willard is going to i17, but a good chunk of issues is because of staff. I'm not saying that all the higherups and faction leads are rather poor, but I do think there are enough that warrants concern.

My character was apart of the Helvetic Party, a party made with the purpose of creating a congress and attempting to bring some democratization. However, the lead of the party faced multiple attempts from game masters to literally shut it down or try and force a path that was objectively boring and cringe. Basically three Union higherups(?) that were highly affiliated with the benefactors forced him into a room and attempted to force him into a bargain which he had no choice. They got guns and masks, and almost seemed gang like considering the environment he was put in. Of course the lead committed suicided using a razor for OOC reasons that he didn't want to be in this situation. Eventually this was resolved in a PK appeal but on the condition his character agreed to the bargain in the first place, meaning he didn't have a choice in the end. He died like a day later because the City Administrator just killed him and that was it. Nothing came of it, no chance of you know, bringing something interesting to the table of the already boring CCA. It was just the admins and game masters didn't want it and so they gave it the reason that this was basically 1984 and there was no chance of it.

No, we are not in 1984. 1984's scope of level is beyond comprehension for how totalitarian it is. The entire group was effectively disbanded and left aside from me and a few initially. I was actually going to try and make an insurrectionary party in the ash of the Helvetic party, but I eventually stopped trying as there wasn't much left I could do.

Next, I thought that whoever decided to just throw a shit ton of NPC's into the sewer was actually braindead, who simply hated rebelrp. Why? Who thought this was a good idea? Sewers should be risky, but this is just idiotic for how they went. Yeah let's throw down some poison headcrabs, that'll surely will bring rp. Or better yet, the genius who decided to be a crazed gunman with little to no care for anything. He just shot everyone down there on terms of,"hE's CrAzY". Fortunately this was also considered dumb by the majority of the community and was handed accordingly. But I seriously thought after this that the staff have very fetishized and one-sided approach to HL2RP. No one wants to be in 1984, no one wants to randomly die because staff didn't want them to be in the sewer.

The staff here seemed hostile to a lot of what the now Hl2RP server considers as accepted, at least when I was still here. I truly think this issue lies on management, not devwork. What is the point of making v3 of this map when City 24 just doesn't seem compatible in the first place. There seems to be conflicting ideas on what's wrong here, and personally I don't think having more development on the server is enough.

Part of the issue there is with HL2RP itself. You have to sacrifice lore accuracy to provide RP freedom. Nobody wants to actually play as a useless citizen with no rights, no friends, etc. That's why HL2 is such a sad setting for the citizens. They're miserable.

It's like willingly playing serious North Korea or Iranian citizen RP.

Sacrifice some of the lore for more RP. I like lore accuracy, but it doesn't work.

So this post is very important, it's also a good sign and a good opputunity that was absolutely missed.

My character was apart of the Helvetic Party, a party made with the purpose of creating a congress and attempting to bring some democratization. However, the lead of the party faced multiple attempts from game masters to literally shut it down or try and force a path that was objectively boring and cringe. So this is a interesting point, I remember these threads popping up and I in general supported the direction of it. My only contention was a form of democratic party was going to be doomed by the nature of the totality of the situation we're in. However- this entire situation could've been easily played out in a more fascinating means. For example: Political parties are a interesting concept we played with back in 2007, we hosted parties and some political parties whilst praising the combine publicly were the biggest resistance operatives in the server. There is so much that could've been played out here but the administration didnt even bother to run a player centred approch and contact this guy from what I can see and meet some kind of suitable comprimise to give the person a idea of how to bring a fusion of ideas about.

Next, I thought that whoever decided to just throw a shit ton of NPC's into the sewer was actually braindead, who simply hated rebelrp. Why? Who thought this was a good idea? Brain dead indeed. This is a clear sign that who ever is doing this shouldn't had been a admin or didn't pass a quality check. I as a player can not roleplay with a NPC. I can not convince a NPC, I can not persuade a NPC, I can not fight a NPC.

Making a event character who's sole goal is to run around shooting everyone is also terrible and this should be obvious as fuck.

Guys williard is alive and well just the map is too big.

All will become much better after the change of the map.

I hope so.

at for running or get killed by the fallout new v
The issue wasnt about targets or anything. Hell, you could just be standing idle as a mafia all day in the street and I'd still have a issue with it solely based on the immersive element. The way such group is portrayed is so 1950's and uncharacteristic to the setting. It was but a sole example.
Dont worry, you're not the sole issue. Atleast you're calling out issues, that's a good thing right?

Fuck it, I'm here. Let's backtrack to day 2. Might as well take a sledge hammer to this thread, I've already rode in here yee''hawwing with a killdozer. Fuck it, I can unleash my diaper now. Que Music!

And that's only a taste, a mere drip in the water. (Regarding OTA)
Do you want the Blue pill or the Red Pill? Cause I got a fuck load more of these where they come from in the form of spicy memes and hot sauce.

I literally got PK'd by these brainlets for a bottle of toxic waste being next to me, which was not even mine, I was in group of 5 people, they said if we won't admit ourselves they're going to take our LPs, so of course I said it was me, even though it wasn't, I got dragged into Nexus and executed, These CPs are main reason why I don't visit this server, because of their toxicity and of their shitty roleplay, they have nothing better to do than beat you for holding shift for 3 seconds.

I guess not, from what i see we're usually getting around 45/55 players on average, you have to remember that the majority of the playerbase is EU based, so whilst 5PM in EST time is 11pm GMT+1 (Which is roughly the centre of Europe), and usually the time where normal people go to sleep.
