Ration units

This is not a suggestion. I'm not pushing for this to be added to the server since there's better things to do

I got the idea of 'Ration units' instead of just rations from two things: That one announcement in half life 2, and Half Life Alyx's individual food rations.
Ration units would work like a food bank. Food is manufactured by the workforce, and that food is then added to the ration center. Food is then purchased using dedicated ration units.

  1. Every character starts with twelve ration units, for example.
  2. With these ration units, they can head down to the Ration Distribution Center and redeem their ration units for ration items. These ration items are basic combine-branded and mostly flavourless supplies. Examples would be water-flavoured bars and boxes of calorie paste.
  3. After a certain amount of playtime, your ration units are increased back upto twelve
  4. Ration units can be awarded alongside social credits due to extra work for the union and supervised workshifts.
  5. If a large incident occurs, such as a shooting involving CPs, ration units may be deducted from either the 'block' it occurred in, or from the district as a whole.
  6. While lower tier ration items will generally not run out of stock and are automatically replenished after a while, higher level items may run out as they are replenished over a much longer amount of time. This is where production shifts come in. Players are assigned to package, label, scan, and weigh every food item that comes in. The result is that a large number of higher tier items are now manufactured and ready to be distributed at ration centers, and the shift organiser logs the results of the production shift which restocks the ration center with that particular item. Workers are then awarded SC and Credits as a general payment for going to their assigned jobs, and ration units. The amount of ration units awarded may vary. While credit and SC rewards are a set amount for everyone, the amount of ration units awarded will vary from person to person

I've been coming up with a few ideas recently, and this is the most current-hl2rp-friendly one I could think of.

What should be different?
1. No rations after the first 12, you have to do workshifts and all that jazz to get more rations.
or
2. You only get so much that you can barely survive.

So, say that you get a set of coupons/units basically as "key items" to obtain rations with. Like @adi. models:

You start with 12 "basic tier" units/coupons which you can use at will to feed yourself and obtain a basic supply of tokens over like a week or so. You obtain more basic tier units over time from a dispenser outside the nexus as per the standard method (rations over time).
You get medium tier units from work cycles or if you a medium level loyalist which actually give you a real supply of tokens and a decent food supply.
You get premium tier if you are a high level loyalist or someone who deserves a especially large reward.

These can be given out CP's or CCA's and freely used at the rations terminals whenever needed. With the obvious restriction that every use of these keys are logged and only one key can be used per hour-ish.

This sounds like a different way to do rations apart from the old boring "wait for rations ticker to hit 0 and get ration".

I approve.

This would actually make sense with Dispatch's broadcasts and actually add another thing for Loyalist/Citizen RP to actually do, instead of having auto-rations every hour and not having to worry about your money or starvation. Citizens will be able to get into the mindset that they actually have to SERVE the Union in order to benefit for it, or at the very least stay alive. It can also help Rebel RP by possibly driving discontented citizens who are unhappy with the UU to actually become a rebel, instead of just going "Combine bad!", they have another, more common place actual logical reason to rebel.

I’d keep everything digital if I had this in a server, maybe with redeemable physical coupons after workshifts but mostly digital would be ideal. It'd make it much simpler and easier for an RL or Dispatch to restrict ration units if something happened

What I might think about is putting stamps in your papers. Every citizen has a small notebook with their name and shit on it, but also pages for ration units to be logged every day but whoever's running the ration place, CPs can add more stamps, etc.

Everything except this is a yes from me honestly.

I prefer for them to be a mix between digital units and physical items

The ration units would just be given over time (capping at four with one per hour) with units being able to stop the clock for individuals via the datapad or for dispatch/RL's to outright stop units being given district wide in case of emergency (rations deduction). Dispatch/RL/High Ranking CCA can also grant additional rations units and even go beyond the cap of four.

The loyalist-level determines what type of rations are granted by the machine. Everyone is still given the same amount of rations but Biotic-Tier/Medium-Tier/Premium-Tier are given their own type of rations which grants more tokens (no tokens for Biotics) or a better food supply.

To get around the fact that the rations-units cap at four and the rations quality is limited by loyalist-tier are the coupons, which are a free redeemable override and gives the exact listed ration item on the coupon regardless of the amount of units or loyalist-tier. This can happen so long as rations are not outright closed (which should almost never happen outside of emergencies). However the use of coupons are logged and if questionable individuals are caught using coupons then units are likely to investigate.

You wouldn't be given absolutely no food, you'd just have less food given out.

The way my thing would work is each ration item would be worth a certain amount of these ration units. So, a regular civ would have too few units to obtain them with, with loyalists being given more daily ration units to redeem higher value items.

So, ration units would basically be a currency used solely for purchasing food at ration centers. It was a thing in post-ww2 Britain. You get a certain amount of units per day, you use the units to get rations, units can be awarded to you/deducted from you resulting in more/less quantity/variety of food.

Coupons might work in the way you described them, but I'd still change a good bit about what you put if I ever implemented this into HL2RP

I utilize something very similar to this for my own server, and it works quite well.

To get the dispenser to give you a ration, you must give it a Workforce Coupon. You get Workforce Coupons by participating in Work Cycles, carrying out labour tasks manually-assigned by Civil Protection officers, or sometimes by turning in low-tier contraband items.

No items on my server are just 'automatically generated' or spawned in, however. All items (including rations) are either manually fabricated and produced during Work Cycles using an extensive fabrication plugin that I've made, or imported from other cities/Combine Fabrication Plants for a few tokens that are then deducted from the City's stock. (We had an IC economy crash the past month, thank fuck we fixed it lol)

You also use Workforce Coupons to apply for different organizations and factions such as the Civil Workers' Union, the Civil Medical Union, the City's Congress, Civil Protection, and more.

All of these systems have shown to work quite well with one another thus far, since the need to actually work to get food encourages participating in Work Cycles, thereby encouraging more roleplay, so I would say that you are in the right direction with this.

Pretty much that, yeah. Except coupons are like a seperate, non-transferrable, and replenishing currency you use to redeem different ration items (egg paste, water) instead of a ration packet.
