So, as some of you may or may not know, Helmets, as of current... Are pretty useless. Now, they've always been kind of useless, as in, not having a function, however, this has become even WORSE in the current map. Now, let's quickly approach what the issues, for me with Helmets are.

First of all, is LACK OF ANY COLD INSULATION
And second of all, NO UTILITY IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM

Helmets, are currently purely "drip" and "vanity" items. Issue is, there is NO reason to wear it, because not only will your ass freeze off (unless you've got heavy+ gear on everything else), and even on C8 and 24, why bother with it, it's a resource waste, and outside of S2RP (which is rare as is), it's rarely considered, hell even WITH IT, it's rarely considered.

So, as a man of ideas (Some better and worse), here's what I think helmets could use.

GIVE HELMETS ANY SORT OF COLD INSULATION
Sounds simple. Helmets, having 0 Cold Insulation, not only kind of makes no sense, but means, that if you DO CHOOSE to wear it, you're sacrificing a beanie (Extreme Insulation btw), forcing you to either get other types of clothes + gas masks just to EVEN IT OUT.

IN my opinion, if you choose to wear a Helmet, you should get at least LIGHT to MEDIUM , which if you ask me, sounds a lot more fair. Considering it's a not super cheap item to get, AND considering the fact that a Bandana which is a lot CHEAPER, provides the same type of insulation (Medium).

Now, before you say that "Helmets don't provide any insulation irl!", here are some pictures of Ardennes Offensive (Battle of the Bulge) aka. Winter, and, while some soldiers did carry beanies under it (WE WILL BE BACK TO THIS SOON), SOME OF THEM did not. Again, pictures below.

THIS MEANS, that Helmets on their own either A) Provide some cold insulation B) People didn't mind the cold (Hair + Body Warmth) or something else entirely. And if these real life examples, prove this, then it could work out.

HOWEVER if that would be too good, or isn't something planned, then allow BEANIES and HELMETS to be combined via. Crafting. The recipe would be:
- x1 Beanie (Any Kind / Or specific for each type)

- x1 Helmet / Medic Helmet (For Medic variant too)

(YOU COULD ALSO SOMEHOW MAKE IT SO YOU CAN WEAR BOTH AT ONCE, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE BODYGROUP HELL)

This, would not only provide more STYLE, but also utility to a item that lacks any. This solution is better if giving Helmets themselves insulation won't happen. That being said though, If giving Extreme Insulation to this combination would prove too strong, let's say that instead of providing Extreme, let's say it would give HEAVY Cold Insulation which, while worse, would still be a very solid choice, considering it would be basically 2 Headgear in one. (IRL Battle of the Bulge example pic below)

NOW, MOVING OFF OF INSULATION, LET'S TALK
UTILITY

I genuinenly am of the belief, that helmets could use a genuine utility, that goes beyond insulation or combining with other headgear. Yes, I say we give Helmets ARMOR. HOW MUCH?!

5

Helmets getting 5 Armor, may not seem like a lot, but it would increase low tier Rebel Armors, just a HUNCH. Basic Uniform would go from 15 to 20 (15+5), meanwhile Light Kevlar would go from 25 to 30 (25+5). In my eyes, the fact helmets don't provide anything already, is odd, and really shows their uselessness, and lack of need.

Now, that aside, let's also say, that if you LOSE all of your Helmet's armor, repairing it, would require:
- x1 Crafting Bench / Metal Workbench - If stationary repair
- x1 Piece of Iron
- x1 Helmet itself
- x1 Toolkit - MAYBE if "field" repair (like Kevlar can be), is allowed.

When repairing the helmet, you would repair it, akin to how you fill up a Water Bottle. Approach the Bench (whichever one is better), have the helmet in your inventory + Iron, and right click on the helmet, choose an option "repair", and BOOM your Iron goes, and Helmet is repaired. You could also remove the need for a bench, and require a toolkit, using one of it's "uses" and the piece of Iron.

Would this be cheaper than Repair Plating? Yes, but Helmets in-game, aren't made from same material + having less armor, makes them not as big of a deal, not to mention, if it needed a bench, no field repair would be a problem. NOT ONLY THAT, but even if Field Repair existed, you would need to grab and use up Iron, a rather important resource. It would be a useful thing for people who can spare, but not for poorer / lower ranked Rebels and Cells.

Aaaaand that's it.

Anyway, do you agree with both? With one of these? Hell, do you disagree with neither? I personally believe that giving some utility to a pretty iconic Rebel piece, not only seems fair, but is also fitting.

here are some pictures of Ardennes Offensive

Here's a picture of the Vietnam War. The soldier here is wearing a helmet. He must have been protecting himself against the notoriously extremely cold Vietnamese climate and not to protect himself against getting shot in the head, because that would be ridiculous.

That's why I propose both? Giving armor + Insulation. ALSO You can't compare Ardennes during Winter to 'Nam, which is hot and humid all around.

Like smh, that's just disingenuine. I could have brought pics of other Wars that took place in Winter / Cold environments, it's just these looked best for what I meant.

Are we going to ignore that in all of these pictures, the people wearing the helmets have beanies underneath it?

The helmet is to prevent the bullets from skulling you, the beanie is to protect u from the cold.

Point and case, the soldier in Nam doesn't have a beanie, the one in the cold does.

After rereading this, I saw that you mentioned the above.

Message rescinded.

I haven't made/used a helmet (Since I have no incentive to) but an item requiring both Iron and rivets should provide you with at least SOME protection. Five is a little low on the protection it offers so I'd personally go with ten; to repair it you'd need a toolkit and two pieces of Iron, providing five additional armour each.

I don't see the point in providing it with insulation when you have other, better options (Like the Beanie) I'd be perfectly fine with mild insulation but any more than that then you're just trying to make a metal beanie.

I would like to see an upgrade to the helmet, however, something like a "Harderned" or "Strong" variant of the helmet: requiring steel, rivets and Adhesive; would offer 25 Protection, giving the max armour a rebel can get being 75.

That's why I said it should be LIGHT to MEDIUM at most. Either LIGHT just like the CWU Hardhat, or Medium, since it does cover more of the head than the Hardhat.

Also, 10 armor for just a helmet? I mean, it could work, that's a neat idea.

Excluding the third one with the visible Beanie, not all soldiers on the pictures have them, and even if they do, they're very hard to notice. I specifically chose these pictures, since Soldiers either don't ALL have, or are hardly seen. This is also why I offered idea of combining the Beanie with the Helmet, maybe at the cost of lower Insulation level.

No armor for helmets

I'm sorry dude but rebels already look identical. The helmet is the only drip slot you got.

"But it's a helmet and I want armor."
No. It's drip or drown in this world and if you don't look good on the battlefield, you shouldn't be there.

Considering most people won't wear it now due to the cold, I don't think that's a good thing either. In C8 / 24 it didn't matter. But now? If you wear it, you're basically throwing :/

Ah yes I am.going to wear a metal helmet on my head in -50 degree weather nothing wrong will happen... right?

If you wear you're basically throwing

I'd sport it. Why not? It's a bit nippy out? Your ears are cold? Nah, I'm a stud. If i need to warm up I'll hold my smoking gun barrel towards my face. Cause I just took out 2 PTs while they were positively dazzled by my non standard fit. CPs won't even need a name for that BOL
it'll just be "That cool looking dude."

What I'm shaking uncontrollably from frostbite? Know what they call that where i am from? Recoil compensation...I pity the fool.

I mean, like I said, you could also combine beanie + helmet, or make it light insulation like the CWU hardhat. Which is odd how it has it, but normal Helmet does not.

Also it is throwing, since you will only be wearing it in places, where you need heavy / extreme insulation to not die in 10 seconds

I always used to wear it incase of s2rp situations

Even Outlands aren't that cold YET

Also, pics above, Soldiers literally wearing them without beanies too, you can google many others where it's the case, even in Invasion of Russia during WW2.

Like, I'm not asking for it to give Extreme insulation, I just say maybe Light (MEDIUM AT MOST) , considering CWU one does.

An actually alright suggestion for gameplay, even if a bit unrealistic. I'm downvoting it. Fuck you and your good ideas.

This is a good suggestion. Give the helmet light insulation so that it isn't completely inferior to the beanie (which you should be able to just put on beneath your helmet anyways realistically, also it will still be completely inferior to the beanie cause there's no reason to not wear the cheaper item that offers more so)

I don't know why anyone would argue in favor of keeping any item in a useless spot other than because they'd just like to clown on the person who posted this. We added cold mechanics for a reason and the items in-game should be a reflection of the new system.

Don't give them armor though.
