Whats the difference between Willard and a standard HL2RP server?

HL2’s city is inspired at least in part by 1984. It’s been confirmed by the writers/developers many times.

Willy server networks has an identity crisis where it is intended to be played like an RPG with gameplay systems, but the sheer amount of serious RP players has mutated that design goal into an afterthought. People just want a populated, stable server to invest time into.

Willard was never supposed to be some semi-serious RPG game. The RPG stuff exists almost solely to just eliminate the need for admins to constantly intervene every single time something needs to be done. It's an RP server first and foremost and always has been. A serious RP server at that.

Yes, I agree - but to the opposite.

The RPG side of Willard incentivises less RP and more script and skill hunting to reach your goal.

But it was and is a serious RP server first and foremost and intends to stay that way, being labelled an RPG server happened after launch.

I'd argue Willard's RPG side is fine, but the other things may discourage some things.
Like PK may discourage rebel play or going into sewers, so most folks go into CPs or Loyalists in order to get good stuff without having to risk it.
But that's present on all servers with PK so not really a Willard only thing.

I know you are new to SeriousRP and PKs but trust me, they are highly important. Pks ensure the common narrative shifts, bends and can be corrected or broken. Without them, everything turns into a stagnant mess. Nothing matters cause there is nothing to be gained from mortality. A focal part of most stories.

Also, PKs don't discourage people from playing rebel or any faction. They are apart of the mode itself.

I think I worded it wrong, so let me explain what I meant again.

PK discourages rebels especially than anybody else, because if dying means losing ALL progress, then it's not worth doing as there is nothing to gain, but everything is to lose.

Also, Loyalists and CPs make up such big chunk of the players because as I've mentioned it's safe because you going to sewers are low (unless you are CP, but you've got a gun) if existant at all, and loyalists won't do suspicious stuff so they won't be risking themselves. I've talked to people on the server and many of them (including some guy with 200h on their own character now) say if they'd die, they'd quit HL2RP since they don't want to do everything all over.

And yeah I might be new to PK since I played on bunch of HL2RP servers and none of them had it, but I don't agree with the "into a stagnant mess" I mean Serious RP servers exist without it and work fine, but maybe Willard wouldn't be able to.

From my perspective as a city roleplay skeptic I'd say Willard is the same as every other standard hl2rp server, there's little room to differentiate yourself in this setting and WN mostly tries to by throwing fancy scripting at you.
Biggest issue for me is that the whole server seems to be designed to be a ultra loyalist combine city, even if now it's developing into a (at least lore-wise) less stable urban centre, I feel like it will always be too combine-biased since c24 is deep into Combine territory and away from any tangible outside threat.

Honestly my biggest gripe with hl2rp is that no one ever seems to have tried developing a variant of city rp where Combine control is more shaky and there is constant outside danger instead of relying exclusively in the player agency of rebel mains who are always too comfortable sitting on their scripts or are just too nerfed to do anything relevant. For once I'd want to play a Frontier City setting of some kind where even the most basic citizen character has to fight alongside every other faction to survive endless waves of antlions swarming the town or whatever. I would play the hell out of a short stories event that experimented with settings like that.

HL2 is a technocratic dystopia. everything is ruled by a core scientist elite (headed by breen, a scientist) and the entire reason earth is allowed to exist is to develop portal technology. this is far from 1984, where scientific progress didn't matter + the combine itself is a mishmash from several books released in the 1960s and before. "it's a dystopia" =/= "this is 1984" (except in the case of memes)
Serious HL2 roleplayer: "No, you cannot say Half-Life 2 was inspired by 1984 at all because that diminishes the inter-complexity upon which the official lore was inspired from a multitude of literary works pre-dating the 1960s."

Valve: haha hl2 = 1984-inspired apple commercial

To be frank it was a mac edition trailer.

New to the server and out of curiosity decided to hit the forums and ask what the difference is. I'm confused about skills and different starts - It seems an interesting way of doing things but just how radical is the change from other serious HL2RP servers of old? (Ie, like LemonPunch.)
it feels really real. it feels like a sandbox with people. it feels cool to interact with people and do shit. cool shit. bing bing bong.

the difference?

willard just survived a lil bit longer than your average hl2rp, but at its core, it's still the same as anyone else

potemkin server

Wasn't one of Willard's biggest selling points the Xcom-esque combat system though? And I'm sure it launched with the idea of automated crafting and smuggling and such.

Most of the early scripting was specifically put into RPG elements so staff didn't have to handle everything, as you said.

Oh yeah, definitely.

But it's focus is still on serious RP, that's what it is afterall.

Being labelled as a hl2rpg specifically though is something that came after it launched.

I just like the development and scripts

PassiveRP is a big thing in HL2RP too, SeriousRP isn't about just lolwebuling and shooting up every CP and Citizen you see, you form connections, create a story.
It isn't VR Chat, people want to play, explore areas, commit crimes, craft items, make bases, trade and so on.
This is like New Vegas, but if you removed the fun.
