WN Skills tier list

Cooking is S-tier. Like... easy +15 skill levels in every single skill (that's a whopping 120 skill levels). Like imagine not having to train any single skill above level 30 really to reach max level (because starting attribute points also give +5-6). Crafting to make all the shit.

Smuggling helps as a source of a lot of things, but with effort you can get that elsewhere. Just a big QOL really to turn excess shit into chips into useful shit without needing other players. Guns is debateable. I have 0 guns on my rebel, 0% experience in it, and it is completely useless to my playstyle. But some people use (need) it, and leveling it gives proper boosts.

Speed gives quite decent benefits in fights, but really you want a good gun first and be able to use that good gun. Medicine makes a lot of useful shit, but most of it is at lower levels already. Still, can do cool shit with it if you bother, just not as universally OP.

Melee sucks and I should rework it. Although getting consistent damage with heavy melee weapons might be underrated atm.

Speed and guns are a little overrated. I found their effects of guns to be meh as long as you meet the minimum threshold for the weapon you're using.
More than 30 guns will ever come in useful. and the crit chance difference between 50 guns and 30 guns was like 100% -> 90% when shooting at unarmored people.

Speed is useful to run away faster and run further in TBC.

Nobody uses fucking Melee

Some levels in medicine is useful to make decent medical items (Disinfected bandages, anything less is worthless because it has no desinfectant value.) If you want to go bananas and always have a major boost option in the back pocket, get level 35 in medicine for the pills. 20/25 might also be enough for medium level pills. I'd say Medicine is basically the stat you dump a lot of extra leftover points into because the extra bandaging value you get from medicine is pretty nuts on the healing department. Like 50 healing doubles/tripples the effectiveness of your medical items.

Smuggling, crafting and cooking is for making shit, and like Gr4ss mentioned, food boosts are borderline busted.

What level should I get cooking to, for example?

To 30 with your default stats helps, as you'll want those recipes so you can cook your shit to get your stats kickstarted if you ever run out of boosts. Lets you make a +5 perception boost (doughnut, creamy leech stew) to get 40 cooking from where you can make all the good stuff.

If you aren't going to do roasted beef/happy pie + salmon steak though (or high level baking) you can get away with topping out at 30 cooking with a level 20 cooking boost. In that case level 20 with your default attribs and keep a +5 perception item stored to hit 30, or level 24 so you can use a +3 perception boost to get to 30 (or 21 for +3 perception, +3 intel boost).

And if you got credits to spend on vegetable soup (really cheap +4 intel), level 20 cooking also works. Add a +3 perception boost to hit 30 cooking and you can now make +5 boosts in strength & agility with antlion/headcrab meat to run +3/+4/+5/+5 already. If you also cook leeches you can do +5 perception when the +3 runs out, and make new vegetable soup for cheap yourself.

tl;dr you want to go either 30 or 40 cooking with boosts, and you can ideally boost there simply with your unboosted cooking level to easily kickstart your skills. With the amount of stat boosts you'll have, putting some levels into it shouldn't hurt too much though - you'll have high skills across the board already and can still easily do multiple skills to level 50 with food boosts.

Embrace the vort play style. Don't make the same mistake as I did and dump all of your points into melee for no reason :angrycop:
