The past week has been an absolute mess due to, what I consider to be, two very mild jokes in memetopia. In summary, I believe I have become the target of specific staff members, specifically because of bias held.

Staff in Question

Neonity
The one who posted a staff chat message, which has been posted below, who I have censored since this is a public post.
Potentially other staff members who may be directly (through personal vindictiveness) or indirectly (by believing the two listed above) in support of this.

Preemptive Actions

In an effort to avoid making this thread, I took the following actions to try and fix the situation:
- Talking with DeNuke to understand why this is happening and what for.
- Talking with RAD-X to understand why this is happening, and who to even talk to about it.
- Contacting the head of staff, Neonity, and receiving no response.
- Making a ban appeal, which was accepted. (Though this was for nothing, as will be shown soon.)

The Bans/Warnings in Question

1691171047042.png
These were received, as seen, on the 22nd of July. I was not banned following these warnings. The ban came a while after, on the 31st of July if I were to go by a pic posted in just a second after the next one.

1691171084791.png
This was received today, August 4th, after a ban appeal had been accepted and I was unbanned. Keep in mind, there were no warnings before this ban, nor had I done anything (or at least thought I had done anything) to cause this.

E 1.png
This is what I can only assume followed the ban. Each of these points, and the images he posted, will be elaborated below.

Timeline of Events

Due to me being banned from the server as of now, it has proven difficult to establish a timeline of events because the posts I made that are the center of all of this were so minor in my eyes that I didn't even make note of it. All I can go off is what was provided to me from the staff chat. All the evidence below was acquired from a staff member who was kind enough to show me what exactly I was banned for since the warnings were given and the posts immediately removed.

First Post of Contention

This post is what I believe caused the first warning, that of "Racism". According to the staff chat above, it is stated that Neonity believes I "made" a meme about George Floyd. This is what I assume the image was, as I remember posting it, though I did not make this. This is actually from tenor gifs.
ezgif-3-ce68861462.gif

Personal Opinion

I don't see why this was marked as "Racist". Low brow and maybe offensive to those who liked George Floyd, I can see, but not racist. Nothing in this meme implies hatred towards, or bigotry towards any race.

Second Post of Contention

This post is what I was warned for "Transphobia" over. I remember this clearly because I was warned shortly afterwards.
1691171859243.png
Transcription of the pic since it is low quality:
"I say 'Was that you?' because this isn't the first time I've been served up this Incredibly embarrassing piece of shit MS paint drawing. No reason to assume she's lying about drawing it? So yeah, you suck at art, never put mouse to mousepad in any art program again."

"'Hey look at this terrible crime against art that looks nothing like you, aren't you triggered????' Ya sure if that helps you feel less like the failure you are I guess lol"

Personal Opinion

I also don't see why this was labelled as "Transphobia". Nothing in this meme states or implies transphobia. The most it is, is insulting towards a specific person for being ugly, but this person is not involved in our community at all, nor is there presence even of note in our community.

Third Post of Contention

This post is what I assume I was warned for "Antisemitism" for. I do not have the video itself, but it's essentially a charicature of a "chud" being told that he'll never solve a Trigonometric problem by an old charicature of a jewish person. The video then shows the chud working and explaining through the problem and solving it using formula, followed by him stating "Take that, Mr. Zog!" (which CAN be seen as antisemitic, because of its conspiracy-related origin), and the jewish person saying "Noooo too high IQ!"
1691170832983.png

Personal Opinion

I understand that this may be offensive, though I personally only found it to be mildly so. Knowing that, I completely understand the warning for it. However, it was never my intent for this to convey any message of hate, bigotry, or antisemitism. This is a meme. It was done in jest. As far as I'm also aware, no one responded with personal offense towards it. So again, I understand the warning, but I wouldn't understand any claims beyond "You posted an offensive meme." such as, as stated in the ban above of, "common bigotry and unnecessary hatred." I don't feel that I need to explain why Black Humor (link attached) is not considered indicative of the personal beliefs or intentions of those who use it.

Other Points of Contention

These posts are what were provided above in the staff chat as to support the claim that I am a "bigot" with "unnecessary hatred."

1691173051216.png
I don't remember what channel this was in, but like everything else here, it was done in jest. I'm sorry if it didn't come off as funny. What is to be noted however is that no transphobia actually followed this. Nothing was posted in relation to this post.

"has directed scarlet, a trans community member, to a site dedicated to stalking & harrassing people that explicitely targets trans people"
This was used as part of the claim of transphobia. This is an outright lie. Again, I do not have access to the Discord, but anybody can verify this should the post not have been deleted. What exactly was said, as close to as I remember, was:
"Hey Scarlet. What do you think about Encyclopedia Dramatica?"
Encyclopedia Dramatica is a satirical wiki site which makes obviously satirical posts about all sorts of things. Its defining attribute is that it doesn't hold itself to any rules over vulgarity, and so will use all sorts of language to convey satire about a wide, wide range of topics. It does not "explicitely target trans people," it targets literally everybody and everything. This is a misunderstanding at best, and an outright lie at worst. I suspect that it is a lie, because it is being used in support of another lie.

At no point did I ever direct Scarlet to it, as this is a lie. I never said "Hey, go to Encyclopedia Dramatica." What I asked is what they thought of it. Note that nothing followed this question. I don't remember what Scarlet said in response. I don't know what Scarlet personally did when they read that, nor did I care beyond their response, to which I did not respond too. I don't see how this even remotely implies "transphobia" in the slightest.

"has posted 4chan-tier memes targeting trans individuals"

There was no meme posted that could be construed as targetting trans individuals aside from the one I posted above, which as I have shown, wasn't transphobic at all. This statement is a lie.

Evidence of Bias

I believe that I have been the subject of bias. I believe this bias is in regards to transgender individuals, as well as hatred towards me, personally. It should be noted that no single one of these should be seen as justification to assume, ultimately, that the staff are biased. It is the collection of all these combined which shows that there is bias among staff.

First Evidence: Prejudiced Perspective

As stated above in that staff chat, they state that I am posting memes to target trans individuals, and I quote, "probably more shit I haven't even seen yet." This is an assumption. This is further supported by the following statement, in which they claim that I "made" a "racist" George Floyd meme, and then states that it is "100% in-character". This shows that there is already a bias based on a perspective which cannot actually be verified, which is then being used to justify punishment.

Second Evidence: Personal Beliefs

I do not want to assume what the beliefs of someone else are, as has been done to me, without proper evidence. What I will do however is look at the language and nature of my punishment to show why there might be a bias towards specific beliefs that would cause them to act irrationally in regards to what I have done.

For context, I had already made a ban appeal that was accepted. This ban appeal was specifically over the warnings above, which I personally believe should only have resulted in one warning at most, but accumulated to 3- only to find out later that my ban was not only based on 3 warnings, but other things that they themselves listed, which I have shown above.

- From what I've shown above, we can see that a harsh stance is being taken in defense of LGBTQ standings, which is a hotly contested and political topic in the western world. Again, the emphasis is on the "harsh" stance. I've been warned three times, only one of which was really legitimate.
- We can see that multiple posts were used to support their claims, most of which were not offensive in the slightest, and was essentially an example of "pulling at straws" to make a point. There is no reason I could see for staff to do this other than a personal bias towards their beliefs.
- Knowing the status of (some of) those involved, while not certain, it can be reasonably suspected that there is an implicit bias to defend their own personal standing and status out of perceived grievances, or by unfairly punishing over what they perceive as a minor grievance.

Why I Believe that the Punishment is Unfair

1. All but one of the warnings given were not accurate and not supported by actual observation of the posts in question.
2. No ban message in regards to the ban surrounding this message, along with no ban time. It was safe to assume that this ban was indefinite, especially since it was likely done manually.
3. No indication was given as to what post I was being warned for. All I got were accusations and nothing more, which is why I lot of this report involves memory and gathering evidence.
4. No name was placed with the bans or warnings, making me unable to actually hold anyone accountable for it, even if they had happened to be legitimate.
5. I had made a ban appeal which was accepted. After being unbanned (which was not immediate as the appeal said it would be. I had to contact another staff member after 2-3 days to get unbanned.), I was banned once more after having done nothing.
6. This new ban said that the unbanning was "pre-emptively done", and that a role would be made to essentially bar me from what I assume to be most of the discord.
- Knowing Willard's dev pace, there is no reason to believe that this will be done shortly.
- Because I believe there to be bias in this decision, as evidenced above, there is no reason to believe that this will be done at all.
7. There is evidence of bias behind this decision.

In Summary: I believe I have been permanently banned from the Discord by specific staff members for what could only amount to one real warning for a mildly offensive meme due to an unrelated bias against me, as evidenced above. This report exists because an unban appeal was not honored after its approval, communication could not be made with Neonity, and there is evidence of things beyond just the ban that are influencing this.

Contacting the head of staff, Neonity, and receiving no response.
I do have to come upfront about this as well. I tried contacting them previously about my situation between me and the server before reaching out to Maniac (aka Crabs, when they still were apart of the HoS) and received no response, until Maniac talked about it to them.
While if there was no time to respond to the message when it was sent, surely one would do so at a later time, given **its your job**.

I want to comment on this at some point but, its a novel. I'll have to read it and see if I can't gather my opinions a bit later. There is one thing I want to comment on though:

This is not a job. Its a hobby. Everyone in this community is a volunteer, just trying to help out where we can. Sometimes people reach out and they don't get a response. It happens. We've got a community with hundreds of people in it, and just a few people volunteering to manage it. I believe that they currently put in more than enough effort, and I'd never ask any more of them than they do currently.

People need to be more patient. If you reach out and someone doesn't reply, try reaching out again a bit later. Or perhaps, try and reach out to someone else.

Anyways, here are my thoughts on this @Equinox.

What you consider to be not offensive may be considered offensive to others. This whole thread is basically you just saying that you being muted on the discord is unfair because you think that this stuff isn't offensive to members of the community.

Well, for starters, thats just flat out wrong. All of these 'jokes' you listed above were offensive to me, as a member of the LGBTQ community. I can assure you that these inflammatory posts were offensive to many others as well. So, either you can continue to be ignorant about that fact, or you can apologize for what you've done. Those are your two options.

Also, you're claiming that @Neonity and, by extension, the rest of the staff team and @Imperator RAD-X are biased against specifically you as an individual, and that we're too protective of the community members that are offended by these inflammatory posts. As if you had a target on your back.

In reality, you do have a target on your back @Equinox. You have a long history of racism, transfobia, etc. in Willard discord servers. You've been shown to repeat this behavior over and over again. Shortly after returning to Willard you've started blatantly harassing people once again in our discord. A public discord, which strives to follow discord's TOS, and is intended to a positive and safe place for everyone that wants to be a part of the community.

At the end of the day, you knew what you're getting into. You know this community, you know the rules, and you knew it was wrong when you posted it. Since you've done this repeatedly and, despite many warnings and temporary bans, you have continued to do it, I think you deserve being muted in the discord. Sorry. You made that choice when you posted those things, knowing full well it'd get you in trouble.

I also just want to point out, for everyone reading this that isn't apart of this situation- Equinox sent a single message to Neonity (who was in game at the time). I assume you sent her the single message and, when she didn't reply after a few minutes, you immediately started typing up this thread in which you claim she is ignoring you. In my opinion, thats very deceptive.

Alright, meme aside I'ma throw my hat in the ring.

I will say, and this may come off as a hot take just hear me out, people need thicker skin. I, personally, think a joke shouldn't go further then a joke. Both the person stating the joke shouldn't take it further then it being a joke, just as the same as the listener shouldn't take it more then that.

Now, I will say this. George Floyd meme? Fucked up, but if its in tenor gifs I can see why he thought it wouldn't be offensive. But it doesn't stop the fact he posted it, but whatever. The second one, meh. I generally laugh at anything, and cant really get offended and I personally think it shouldn't of been taken as seriously as it was but to each their own. Now.. The last one, I haven't watched the video I'd have to see it to get the full picture. But generally having Anti-Semitic remarks is a big no no on my part, and is a easy way for me to lose all respect for you.

Now, do I think he was trying to be anti-semetic? I don't know, no real way to prove that unless someone else wants to chime in on this. Do I think he's trying to be Trans-Phobic? Maybe, considering what M!nt has said.

Now, onto what I think on all of this as a whole.

Its the internet.
Now, I can get it if he's out right trying to offend everyone and @ing people yeah.
But if not, and he's just posting for the sake of posting yeah warn him and mute him for it but a permanent ban for it is a bit much, and this is on the basis that all of this is meant to be a joke, which I do believe. I wonder heavily on what happened to 'Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will not harm me'. Yes, its offensive. Does it hurt you? No, it doesn't and really it shouldn't however thats just how I am, and how I was raised.
I do believe Equinox meant no real harm on this but rules are rules? Should he be warned? Yes, he broke the rules. Should he be perm banned from the discord? No, absolutely not.

I want to comment on this at some point but, its a novel. I'll have to read it and see if I can't gather my opinions a bit later. There is one thing I want to comment on though...
Perhaps it has something to do with this happening before countless times (even in way smaller places), as well as seeing myself capable of answering everyone at most within 12 hours. I don't mean to sound like an asshole about it or like I'm better at or whatever but I've never understood what the struggle is or how it is so. 🤷

will respond to this tomorrow probably maybe
I think it should be a "I will respond to this tomorrow."
Considering this is a staff report directed at you, therefore I'd like to think you will respond to this. Rather then put it on a 'Probably Maybe'

To be fair I didn't even respond to the report made against me :angrycop:

This meme is racist because it's mocking a racist attack that claimed the life of an african american man, it was the boiling point in which White Supremacy in America caused a racial minority to be brutalised by the police for a reason that did not warrant it whatsoever. It sparked the Black Lives Matter movement, a social cause that angled against white supremacy and police brutality in america. Even members of our own community on this thread can see why making a meme like this isn't just objectionable but obscene. This is is a screenshot from a video in which a black man is, in a racially motivated act of violence, strangled to death on the sidewalk edited to look like a funny minion meme. It's abhorrent.

1691187473133.png

This meme is transphobic because it involves a soyjak-ified version of a trans woman with ones features accentuated to look male (jowls, balding hair). The subject of this photo is Kathryn Gibes, a woman who has been the target of harassment from a variety of internet cesspits from lolcow sites to kiwifarms. literally just google "kathryn gibes" and scroll down past the first few links and you'll come across the most abhorrent transphobia and homophobia you've seen recently (Well, I know *you* won't since you almost certainly hang out there often anyways)

1691187616713.png

This meme is anti-semitic because it features 'The Happy Merchant', a charicature originating from the chan boards. You're more than welcome to learn up on this charicature's antisemitic history from the anti-defamation league, but in essence it emphasizes traits antisemites typically associate with jewish people in an attempt to incite racial hatred - https://www.adl.org/resources/hate-symbol/happy-merchant

Now, with all of this we had more than enough reason to permaban you from the discord, but we decided that it'd be unfair to keep you from seeing all the announcements and in-game information associated with the server, since your bigotry only seemed to extend as far as posting on discord. Therefore, we made a role which prevented you from spreading said bigotry while keeping you in tune with what's going on in the game. If you wanted to talk about being timed out for 'im about to get transphobic' (That was me and not Neonity, BTW.) It's because you had already directly messaged one of the trans members of the community who's under constant targeted harassment by Pepper asking what they thought of Encyclopedia Dramatica. At the time of messaging them, this was prominently displayed as the page for 'Transgender'

k6I0is6.png
(btw, clicking on the 'offended?' screen would send you to a very long list of extremely explicit gore and pornographic shock images)

We had more than enough reason to believe that you saying 'im about to get transphobic' wasn't a joke.

Frankly, I wanted to perma-ban you not only from the discord, but in-game too, but this community, in my opinion, is too lenient on bigots, and so we tried to give you some breathing room in the form of a role where you couldn't spout all this disgusting shit, but I guess that could be seen as an 'unfair punishment'

These are memes in a discord chat literally meant for memes. How about you just grow up and stop getting so offended? Fun-fact, the type of people who throw around the word "bigot" at people are generally actually the bigots. "Takes one to know one." That phrase comes to mind.

If you're so bothered by their humor, which aligns with other peoples', but not yours, then just block them so you don't have to see their messages anymore? Are they attacking anyone? I don't think so. I really don't care about these memes; people have their own freedoms and rights, but it comes to show that people, like the ones throwing around "bigotry", think that they have some right to not get offended on the internet. What's more gross than your perceived disdain towards his behavior is the fact that you guys think you have some right to make him get on his knees and grovel to you for forgiveness or he's just kicked out of a community that he's probably contributed to a lot more than most. Not to say just because someone does something good that it means that their bad is washed away- quite the contrary; but, I think the abuse of power over another because you can't get a grip on your feelings is quite lame and immature. I'm glad I live in America where I can say what I want to regardless over your hurt feelings. This type of belief is the reason why living in the EU is bad if you're looking for freedoms.

If jokes hurt your feelings, maybe you shouldn't go to a comedy show. In this case, the meme discord. Common sense. I'm sure you guys would get pissed off if talking about LGBT stuff was banned and you'd get excommunicated for it. So, instead of making sure everyone has the rights that you want, you wish to cast down anyone who opposes you. How authoritarianistic of you.

You guys are the same people who believe that people don't have a right to speak "hate speech"

It is just even crazier to me that you guys are getting so amped up about somebody's joke. Like, are you serious? Where's their attack? Where's their deliberate attempt to harm someone? Is there pornographic material? How about bloody content? Is someone being unprofessional in a meme discord? Well, that's wild that somebody isn't being "politically correct" in a server meant for jokes. What a joke.

I believe that they currently put in more than enough effort, and I'd never ask any more of them than they do currently.
If this isn't a job, then what are you even volunteering for? A position? It's practically the same thing. It's a job- a volunteer job. Why do you feel the need to word-smith that? If you are in any position, you have a job to carry out, that's what is meant.

You do not need pornographic or gorey material for your 'jokes' to target marginalised groups, Eternal_Light. I am glad you enjoy Free Speech, but freedom of speech does not mean freedom from the consequences of your speech. I've explained in detail how each of these jokes has a subtle edge that is targeting groups of people who have been historically targeted

If you're so bothered by their humor, which aligns with other peoples', but not yours, then just block them so you don't have to see their messages anymore? Are they attacking anyone?
The harm comes in making people who belong to the groups these 'jokes' target feel less welcome. Blocking them is only a one-person solution and when the posted content is explicitly harmful to these marginalised groups, action is taken

You guys are the same people who believe that people don't have a right to speak "hate speech"
yep

Willard is not a nation state; it does not guarantee your rights, nor does it protect you from authoritarianism. It is an opt-in roleplaying server which aims to create an environment conducive to inclusivitiy for all marginalised groups. There *are* communities where talking about LGBT stuff gets you 'excommunicated' try one of the 1942 rps and try saying you're a trans person on there.

I'd like to add on to this by saying that this person is spending a lot of effort being upset over a Discord mute that doesn't even fully exclude him from the community (given how he can still make forum posts, play on the server, and view announcements and such on the Discord despite not being able to speak on it) and is acting like he's some kind of persecuted martyr over actions that happened in a virtual space on the internet in one single, relatively small community.
I personally have said some very politically/ideologically charged things on associated Willard discord servers before and have been muted once as well (looking at it from a good-faith centrist position, my statements usually lean heavily in the opposite ideological direction compared to Equinox's posts), though I at least have the self-awareness to understand that what I said was, indeed, things that would go against the desires of what kind of environment the staff wants to create and I completely accept that I received consequences for exercising my own right to free speech in the community as people like Equinox and Eternal_Light would put it, and have at least made efforts to tone some confrontational behavior down in community spaces as much as I can allow myself to. I'm sure that there are quite a few members of the community who've done similar as well, and have made efforts to improve their public behavior since then as well.
So I personally also find it especially cowardly and also pathetic that he would go to such lengths, like he's a defendant in a judicial court, to try and downplay or outright deny his own actions even though (once again, from what I see as a good-faith centrist position), I myself have made statements of a similar level before (albeit in the opposite direction), as have likely quite a few other people as well, and I've actually accepted the consequences of doing so and have no real hard feelings towards staff or anyone for doing their job that they aren't even really obligated to do, as well as that he'd put this much effort to defend his position within a virtual community in an online space that shouldn't even be affecting his life enough to have him expend this much energy on Discord community drama.
