It strays farther and farther from the original idea daily.
I don't think it's getting any better.

what's bro yapping aboutI think you both said the same thing. I agree with this reply post, and, also, the title of this thread.
Ask anyone who played the original servers. Even if you compare Cat and Lemon (not that they were super serious) back in 2010ish to HL2RP or WN now....night and day.
Backstory:
I came into WN after a 10 year break. Holy shit - the improvements in game, changes to content packs (a really big one), the framework (BIGGEST one), changes to way forums work, advantages to the community from the release of this new thing called "Discord" I had to learn about. It felt like a whole different game.
So coming from someone who basically took a time machine and saw nothing in between (so granted it's not a full perspective since I missed the whole change to IX and impulse - and something else right?), if HL2RP ever "dies" as people talk about on and off, we're pretty much living one of the better evolutions of this game there was. Like dude, I've been perma banned and even I keep trying to come back on.
The original servers and the immediate "improvements" afterwards 2010/11 timeframe were a new kind of roleplay for players, and in a type of environment for a game about a theme that only kind of surfaced just prior in Fallout 3's release around 2008 and STALKER 2007 (Sci-fi/post-apocalyptic or post-war).
Point Being:
Nothing wrong with nostalgia, but even on the serious servers "back in the day yadah yadah" it was literally like playing DarkRP for an hour to get to 2 hours of SeriousRP. Now adays if you play WN, you see a complaint on the forums, by one player, against another player who gets accused of not taking the game seriously in the server based on some action in game that lasted 5-30 odd minutes, which was some interruption to the complainant player after an entire half day or full day of serious RP for one or both parties. That's a pretty good improvement in my book.
It was like a warzone sometimes trying to fight to get good RP. Nowadays, people just do it (or at least attempt it). It's awesome.
I'm sorry if this seems like a rant..... But every now and again on the forums... I just see these posts.
Or polls, when the manager or an admin polls and asks: 'How's the state of WN RP?" and everyone just mass replies 'Terrible, dog shit, you suck, this is fucking awful." And everytime I see those posts my reaction is the same like
Besides, consider briefly that a constructive post, outlining specific faults, and submitted on the complains/suggestions/feedback part of the forums would do more for any decay you believe might be happening, rather than a general discussion thread that's going to degenerate into beautiful memel0rdery and witty sass.![]()
A lot of peeps here may not know how good they have it. This game has come strides. Not saying your post is a hit piece. Not saying people don't appreciate WN or HL2RP today. And criticism is always good. However, comma space, there's more appreciation to be had for how far HL2RP has come, WN or any server, than hate or distrust.
- And these large, coordinated, well-run, mostly non-dumpster fire events like what WN does now? Forgetaboutit.
- The storytelling and a server lore actually changing by the actions of players? Nope.
- People just kept punching each other in the ration line? Yep. That or idling in game until the ration terminal opened.
Nothing against your post. Every now and again it's important to make those arguments. Honestly, as someone who probably played the same time with you, let me truly say that it's very cash Galunga of you @funger for having the Galungas to be the Devil's Advocate. But in terms of "the original idea...."
Kid you not....an entire server population fluctuation could be timed every day by rational terminals going online/offline. Not saying this doesn't happen now. But bro, I'm tailing about like half a server at times, take your pick on any server lol. There were some good times, and even great times.
However that was the state of much of the old HL2RP. So, if it *did* die a long time ago, then this rebirth is pretty Galunga.

this guy gets it.The tragedy of HL2RP is that it never managed to make the Uprising and its immediate aftermath (the actual fun part of the game) the core setting of its status quo instead of basing it all around the 20 minutes walk that you get for sightseeing concentration-camp oppression that Valve designed solely to present us with the Combine at the start of the game.
I truly believe that some really interesting settings could be explore in the Uprising and aftermath but I've never seen it done quite to my liking. The tragedy of HL2RP is that it never managed to make the Uprising and its immediate aftermath (the actual fun part of the game) the core setting of its status quo instead of basing it all around the 20 minutes walk that you get for sightseeing concentration-camp oppression that Valve designed solely to present us with the Combine at the start of the game.
Now we are the free menI think a great ending to HL2RP would be John Freeman winning against Breen in the colosseum and then he dies but he remembers his wife saying 'Now we are free' before that.
