Half life 2 roleplay died a long time ago, what you are doing is a mix of several different kinds of things.

It strays farther and farther from the original idea daily.
I don't think it's getting any better.
Are you referring to the server's current City RP or the current mega-event? I'd like to hear your thoughts on how we can improve

I think you both said the same thing. I agree with this reply post, and, also, the title of this thread.

Ask anyone who played the original servers. Even if you compare Cat and Lemon (not that they were super serious) back in 2010ish to HL2RP or WN now....night and day.

Backstory:

I came into WN after a 10 year break. Holy shit - the improvements in game, changes to content packs (a really big one), the framework (BIGGEST one), changes to way forums work, advantages to the community from the release of this new thing called "Discord" I had to learn about. It felt like a whole different game.

So coming from someone who basically took a time machine and saw nothing in between (so granted it's not a full perspective since I missed the whole change to IX and impulse - and something else right?), if HL2RP ever "dies" as people talk about on and off, we're pretty much living one of the better evolutions of this game there was. Like dude, I've been perma banned and even I keep trying to come back on.

The original servers and the immediate "improvements" afterwards 2010/11 timeframe were a new kind of roleplay for players, and in a type of environment for a game about a theme that only kind of surfaced just prior in Fallout 3's release around 2008 and STALKER 2007 (Sci-fi/post-apocalyptic or post-war).

Point Being:

Nothing wrong with nostalgia, but even on the serious servers "back in the day yadah yadah" it was literally like playing DarkRP for an hour to get to 2 hours of SeriousRP. Now adays if you play WN, you see a complaint on the forums, by one player, against another player who gets accused of not taking the game seriously in the server based on some action in game that lasted 5-30 odd minutes, which was some interruption to the complainant player after an entire half day or full day of serious RP for one or both parties. That's a pretty good improvement in my book.

It was like a warzone sometimes trying to fight to get good RP. Nowadays, people just do it (or at least attempt it). It's awesome.

I'm sorry if this seems like a rant..... But every now and again on the forums... I just see these posts.

Or polls, when the manager or an admin polls and asks: 'How's the state of WN RP?" and everyone just mass replies 'Terrible, dog shit, you suck, this is fucking awful." And everytime I see those posts my reaction is the same like

A lot of peeps here may not know how good they have it. This game has come strides. Not saying your post is a hit piece. Not saying people don't appreciate WN or HL2RP today. And criticism is always good. However, comma space, there's more appreciation to be had for how far HL2RP has come, WN or any server, than hate or distrust.

Besides, consider briefly that a constructive post, outlining specific faults, and submitted on the complains/suggestions/feedback part of the forums would do more for any decay you believe might be happening, rather than a general discussion thread that's going to degenerate into beautiful memel0rdery and witty sass.

  1. And these large, coordinated, well-run, mostly non-dumpster fire events like what WN does now? Forgetaboutit.
  2. The storytelling and a server lore actually changing by the actions of players? Nope.
  3. People just kept punching each other in the ration line? Yep. That or idling in game until the ration terminal opened.

Nothing against your post. Every now and again it's important to make those arguments. Honestly, as someone who probably played the same time with you, let me truly say that it's very cash Galunga of you @funger for having the Galungas to be the Devil's Advocate. But in terms of "the original idea...."

Kid you not....an entire server population fluctuation could be timed every day by rational terminals going online/offline. Not saying this doesn't happen now. But bro, I'm tailing about like half a server at times, take your pick on any server lol. There were some good times, and even great times.

However that was the state of much of the old HL2RP. So, if it *did* die a long time ago, then this rebirth is pretty Galunga.

i've only been in the serious rp scene for about 5 years but i have the cognitive resources necessary to recognize that trying to stay true to a utilitarian dystopian regime and expect interesting stories and characters to flourish is not fun nor really possible

really the only way to make it bearable is to add a somewhat interesting gameplay loop or drastically change the setting because retail hl2 city rp is just a terrible horrible no good very bad setting for rp

I have been playing HL2RP for a good chunk of my 10,000 hours on GMOD (Over the course of 11 years) and I will say it has been quite the experience.

It's not for everyone... Some love it, and some hate it. But the reality is, that for a lot of people, it's addicting. People get addicted for a few months, then leave for longer and eventually return like myself. Some genuinely have a passion for it and stick around for years. HL2RP in all reality was the pioneer for Serious RP when it comes to a lot of video games now such as FiveM and GTA 5, etc. Thousands of people enjoy RPing every day across various games, and while HL2RP has shrunk both in player base and opportunity, I still enjoy it and love it. That is both for the lore of HL2, and the communities. Not to mention how vastly different it is compared to years ago, and truth be told... what Willard has done with its server and its unique mechanics MAKE me want to play for hours on end.

Personally, before I came to Willard Networks I had quit HL2RP back in 2019. At that time I was a media developer for several large communities such as LemonPunch, and Nebulous.Cloud, and even worked a bit with TnB unofficially. After years on break and being bored from playing the typical shooter, I decided to give it another go. And what brought me back? Well, there was one fateful event I made a scenepose about during an interaction I had with Civil Protection... "Hold it right there..."

^^^^

This post was inspired by an interaction I had with CIvil Protection during my first week back. Honestly, the shit was like crack and I was immediately hooked again... and now I'm back on the wagon for god knows how long. I've already been here for a few months.

The tragedy of HL2RP is that it never managed to make the Uprising and its immediate aftermath (the actual fun part of the game) the core setting of its status quo instead of basing it all around the 20 minutes walk that you get for sightseeing concentration-camp oppression that Valve designed solely to present us with the Combine at the start of the game.

this guy gets it.

Getting beaten daily for very miniscule things is not fun for the players. Expanding upon this already dystopian setting has attracted an audience nobody really expected. Willard has been going strong for a good few years now, and though a little slower than a few months ago, still very much active. I have to say though, the server has definitely leaned into the more "unserious" side for longer than I hoped, with ridiculous rule changes that ruin the immersion of the server. Best we can do is to voice our complains in a constructive manner and try to change the server for the better.

wholistic faithful recreation of HL2 cannon into a multiplayer Garry's Mod RP setting will make sure that your server gets a consistent 3 players and be closed in around two months

What even is the original idea, and why do you think we are here and not there

Also, for planners and staff or whatever, don't listen to these, you can't please everyone, focus on people that actually play your servers other than old hags that are just reminiscing about something older on a video game

i wish willard was faithful to vanilla hl2rp... imagine how fun it would be for everyone involved, especially civilians. my favorite part would probably be my character getting pk'd because someone dared to do something interesting

This server has the most dynamic and interactive story to date while still achieving that iron-grip dystopia 'formula'. The problems are all out of character. Choices and personas that are pushed onto the server that ultimately make problematic scenarios or devastating repercussions.

I truly believe that some really interesting settings could be explore in the Uprising and aftermath but I've never seen it done quite to my liking.

I think a great ending to HL2RP would be John Freeman winning against Breen in the colosseum and then he dies but he remembers his wife saying 'Now we are free' before that.
