This event was great. As a Combine player, we were able to successfully commit to engaging combat against Antlions and fight a few rebel incursions. The inclusion of Triumph as an NLR zone was an excellent addition that made taking potshots against each other viable without feeling like you're sacrificing a year of character development for a few minutes of fun.
As OTA, I feel like we've been granted a lot of freedom in this event to take action when necessary, never feeling like our reactionary force is unjustified. We've done vort escapes, quite a few in fact, they went good and bad. You win some, you lose some. There was almost always something to keep Combine players doing something, whether it'd be fighting NPC's, event rebels in very rare occasions, or players most of the time.
CWU kind of got fucked near the end but to no fault of their own, and the cause was just. Fortunately it was near the end of the arc so it was fitting. Not too bad, and I feel like the CWU players quickly found something else to do in the meantime. Emergency repairs using the tools they had left, for one.
During my limited time playing as a rebel, I've been nothing but engaged in meaningful RP. Joining a group, supplying them with gear, and eventually taking on the most significant attack in Willard's history. And all of this in less than two weeks. Good shit, wasn't bored for a minute. Definitely looking forward to continuing this.
Rebels finally got shit done during this arc. And you know why? Because they finally had A GOAL. I can not stress this enough. People love to complain about rebels doing fuck all, me included, but ultimately it's no fault of their own. What do you actually expect them to do if you're not providing them anything? This arc they were given a set of Combine generators and Thumpers to eliminate. Doing this would increase the Antlion threat, and eventually overwhelm the Combine. And they sure as hell did. CT was confident that rebels wouldn't do anything this arc, but were happily proven wrong. This map change is the direct result of 100% player-led initiative. No staff, nor CT ever told them to do this. They came up with all of this themselves and organized it. And THAT is the coolest effect this arc had.
Player initiative is awesome, but moving forward, each faction needs clear and achievable goals to accomplish and work towards. That is how things get done. Rebels will die back down into doing meaningless things like shotcopping unless they have clear goals to accomplish which inspire lasting change.
