With the map switch to C24 v3, the city now takes center stage for any kind of resistance roleplay.
Currently, rebels are essentially forced to base in the slums, despite two massive apartment blocks on the map going completely unused (not including the also decently sized loyalist apartments). This is a shame because it's a sizeable portion of the map that could see a much better purpose. If we want to bring attention to the city, then allow resistance players to properly establish themselves in the city, instead of being forced to hide in the slums, separating the playerbase.
This is because of the flawed apartment lottery system, which takes away from any kind of interaction between citizens.
Currently, whenever someone purchases an apartment via the Civil Terminal, it's complete random chance which apartment they get, and who their roommates will be. This nearly eliminates any kind of scheming one could do, and prevents anyone from storing illegal items within their apartment, because they have no clue who their roommates are. For all they know their roommate is a T-3 loyalist with a burning passion for selling out resistance members.
You can't rent an apartment and then give the keys to your friend either, you have to be the one to lock and unlock the door. Or the two random roommates who you will probably never see in your time playing. This makes apartments mostly useless, since you can't actually do anything long-term in them at all.
My previous apartment-based suggestion has not entirely seen the fruits of its labour. While implemented in the form of fridges, they're not properly utilized because your two random roommates can freely take stuff out at their leisure, and you can never know they did it.
The potential is there, but goes wasted.
Proposed solution:
| Whenever someone chooses to rent an apartment, they get to pick which apartment they want (provided they are the correct loyalist tier). They can also choose to move in to a pre-existing apartment, but the original owner will first have to accept or deny this request themselves. The owner of an apartment can also choose to invite other citizens to move in with them, by entering their CID in the terminal. They can also choose to pay all rent by themselves, or split it between all occupants. A benefit of an apartment in the city would be the ability to completely negate slum sweeps, since your apartment is in the city. This ensures you, and your items are completely safe in the event of a sweep, especially since the slums gets caught in a sweep many times more often than apartments in the city do. It's much safer. |
Downsides:
| Apartments become scarce. Since you will not as easily be guaranteed an apartment as the previous system, you may be required to find another person who already owns an apartment and request to move in with them. While some may see this as a positive thing, I will put it as a downside for now. With that being said, v3 has considerably more apartments than any other map Willard used recently (i17, v4, t6) so the scarcity won't feel as noticeable. It somewhat takes away from the Combine's dystopia, by allowing citizens to choose their own roommate(s). While it can be deemed unrealistic, Willard is already so far detached from any semblance of canon HL2 lore, that this wouldn't break immersion too much. |
