Are you applying for an event character?:
Yes!
Character that you are applying for (if applying for Event Character):
51st Ensign
---Section Three--
Character Name:
Hans Straussberg
Brief summary of the character:
An unlucky man whom previously lived in prosperity before the war. The Portal Storms took away it all, and Combine subjugated him - fastforward years forth, and now he's a Conscript left on the Outpost, cut off from the Combine. Disgruntled with being ditched, forced to live off headcrabs and Antlions, while having to fend off any other dangers and bear witness to his comrades falling like dominoes. And yet, he lives on, even if merely curious how many days can he survive through before his fall.
Full Backstory (required for Event Characters, but others may do this if they want to):
Hans, as an individual, was never truly worthy of being elevated above the countless seas of grey souls when it came to his past. Personally, even Hans himself would rather leave the history behind - a bygone era he could never return to in his life.
Born into a wealthy family from West Germany just ten days after the fall of Berlin Wall, Hans had little to complain about regarding his circumstances, considering he lived on a rather nice estate. He had abundance of resources a child like him would need, the best tutors a kid of his sort could dream of - in short, he practically lived in a land flowing with milk and honey. In truth, his parents rarely had time for him, always occupied with ‘business’ and similar matters, delegating most of the parental duties to the maids. Sometimes he longed for a mother’s voice, but what could he do? It's not like she was there to hear his concerns
Still, despite his affluent position, Hans was more than willing to help his parents whenever he could, whenever they had time and were around - whether with cooking or cleaning…despite everything, he was not some spoiled brat with his ass higher than his head. Maybe the humility he had was brought into fruition by the housekeepers? Who knows.
He had heard rumors that his family’s wealth came from shady connections in the past-one theory even claimed that his lineage had ties to the German cabal from World War II, allowing them to grow rich off the lives of more unfortunate individuals, but…those were just stupid rumors.
Right?
Everything seemed to suggest that his future studies would bring him a bright future and make him a worthy successor of the Straussberg lineage…
Unfortunately…what he didn't know is that the only thing the future brought was chaos, unrest, turmoil-and, generally speaking, one big fuckfest.
Through TV he had learned that portals had begun appearing all over the world, allowing all sorts of oddities and horrors to enter Earth, commencing to spread confusion and chaos on global scane. As luck would have it (or lack thereof), one such being arrived at his home - a Vortigaunt, which brought with it the massacre of everyone working on the estate. The only person who survived was Hans, who managed to hide in time—and when the creature left, it abandoned the young boy to fend for himself. He didn'
The sight of blood and torn corpses seared itself into his memory. He didn't know if his parents died, because they weren't ever there. Sadly, the situation did not allow him time to mourn the fallen, so he grabbed a backpack, supplies, and set out, eventually reaching the battered Berlin. Up until 2004 he managed to survive somehow, though when the Combine arrived, Hans hid in the ruins of the city, enduring the worst seven hours of his life in terror.
Once everything was over and he could come out, the newly - formed authorities quickly detained him and sent him to a camp, where propaganda was drilled into him along with lessons and sometimes periods of hard labor. It was difficult for him to adjust, but since the alternative option was 'disappearing’ all complaints remained solely within the confines of his thoughts.
When Hans was finally released back into circulation upon reaching the proper age, now residing in one City amidst countless others world-wide, the young adult quickly found his place among the new crowd.
Grueling work cycles, miserable housing conditions, and the downright abhorrent attitude of Civil Protection toward the population left much to be desired, but he somehow managed to live by. Over time, Hans had joined the ranks of the local Civil Workers Union detachment, where his innate knack for technology was noticed, allowing him to climb the organization’s ladder…until the news of conscription into the Conscripts reached him. Naturally, since Hans still preferred ‘better living conditions’ (even if that was probably a lie), he enlisted - and, after some service, with some missions he had to do here and there on behest of Combine, he was shipped off to THETA, where he remains to this day. Living on perhaps out of spite towards fate, toughened by horrors. Still steady.
Why do you want to play this character?:
I'd want to give Conscripts a try, given how for me, the concept of being essentially a cheap, disposable grunt...has its own charm.
