Did you enjoy the most recent slum event?

Honestly it had potential but it felt like the more zombies I killed to help free some stranded citizens in a bar like 50 more would show up. Not to mention there doesn’t seem to be an actual origin of these zombies, they’re not coming from certain spots or anything they’re kinda just appearing. Staff would see me trying to get some citizens to the main city on my vort and spawn like 30 zombies after we finally got a path cleared. It would have just been nice to have even 1 second of peace and a tangible place they could be coming from.

Plus, literally the ONLY path back to the main city was the main exit through the slum force field (which the CPs locked anyways) which felt pretty lame as there was 3 options:

Sit in the slums on a rooftop or in a building and slowly starve to death

make a break for the main city through countless hordes of gonomes and zombies who would lock you in TBC

Or go into the sewers and die of spore poisoning

I did like how CPs are actually having some consequence for triggering all this though with the gonomes smashing through the gates rather than them sitting in triumph all cozy (although not NEARLY as punishing as the slum-goers got for simply existing)

Not to mention how random, defenseless citizens have to sit in TBC and let themselves get mauled to death by zombies meanwhile CPs have it easy and get to S2K the zombies with their guns

I'd just like to take this time to share some absolute gems from our headcrab RPers.

[LOOC] John Headcrab: roll agility
[LOOC] Olivia Armstrong: nah, p2l
[LOOC] John Headcrab: it is p2l
[LOOC] Olivia Armstrong: rolling isn't p2l, that's rolling

* Olivia Armstrong tracked the fast zombie as it moved from the shelter to her balcony; she brought her hatchet crashing down, attempting to bury it into the parasite which controlled it.
Olivia Armstrong yells "GAH!"
* [A long legged head crab with a gaping...] Swipes at the womans leg leaving a nasty gash with his long claw
[LOOC] Olivia Armstrong: What about my /me?
[LOOC] Long Leg: you didint attack
[LOOC] Long Leg: Yeah so hit me
[LOOC] Long Leg: you have a hatchet you can do dammage
[LOOC] Long Leg: Or is it bugged

*** [A long legged head crab with a gaping...] Climes onto the woman torso digging down almost to bone the zombie takes his right claw swiping at the womans hands

*** [A long legged head crab with a gaping...] Moves back off of the woman torn up from the hatchet swings dashing off in panic when all that can be seen left of the womans legs are cuts deep to the bone with green crust forming around most likley infected

No hate to the players, but very few even knew what p2l was, I could see the cog moving in their brain as soon as they realised they couldn't rely on an agility roll to PK me.

At one point I saw an antlion guard in there, what?

And theres the simple fact the slums is entirely cut off right now. Rebels in the city can't get to slums, even if they could, half of them have their gear propblocked inside the apartments.

I'm almost convinced the fact stuff happened inside Indigent was because of outcast characters being made, and the idea was to remove slums from being used for the time being. I don't really understand this because; if people aren't enjoying the city... give them a reason to, don't just force them there.

I appreciate staff accommodating us when we were there, and I did enjoy it- but only because I was on a character I didn't give two shits about, my main was locked off in victory with no way inside.

My introduction to the event was flagging on one of my alts who were logged out in the slums and getting mauled by a fast zombie before the intro splash screen was fully transparent. (Thank God it wasn't this gonome.)

Sadly, it did not get much better after this as this event was advertised like some sort of Ravenholm theme park (nestled right between Walt-Mart and Kaji Restaurant, by the way!) but there were fast zombies (even gonomes at certain points) right at the entrance who told me I must be this tall for this ride. This event is especially funny considering people who create outcast characters now start in a zombie infested building with literally all exits propblocked. (Not to mention relocated citizens who are stuck in Triumph Street from 28 days later if the CPs forgot to set the Triumph tunnel forcefield to blue)
Have a BOL? Fuck you. Logged out with contraband on you or in the slums at all? Fuck you. Want to at least see inside the slums/experience the event? Here's a few zombies spawned at the only entrance of the slums and a few player zombies with the pill pack to boot. How has all hell broken loose in the Indigent but Triumph is completely fine? Do none of the recently infected people have CIDs on their persons?

There is also the matter of cops and scanners during the event, let's take a look at one of the event texts.

Alright, now let's count the sweeps afterwards.

So, have the combine declared it a lost cause or not? Mixed signals right now.
On another note, was the ongoing event mentioned anywhere as an announcement other than the one done in-game? I know I'd be very confused if I didn't have this knowledge as context.

With my schizo rant over an almost 16 year old game over, I'll just leave you with this meme I stole.

Admin wrote it, not us. After seeing multiple gonomes we decided that going too deep into slums is a very bad idea. At first the only safe areas within slums was the square and corridor areas which is the area you've mostly see us in the screenshots you've provided. The same area we stuck around at from time to time for a few reasons. Explosive barrels, that one rebel, our restrictor getting destroyed so we had to push back the zombies, setting up turrets.

Admin assumed and intended that we CPs wouldn't dare enter any parts of the slums at all because of the state of things. Unfortunately, we're Civil Protection (we're stupid).

Edit: I like the event (from the CP side of things lol). The whole idea of slums going through a state of chaos and the people there trying to survive is interesting and provides a struggle for them to go through. Though, the constant swarm of zombies in the area (along with CPs doing a few things to fuck over the slum dwellers) was overkill. They were just constantly stuck there which is never really any fun.

the time to max out your gun skill/melee and agility is now...

seriously just get in tbc and run around and shoot stuff, it'll be max in no time.

I'm probably just going to echo the same shit as everyone else, but I flagged on an alt and nearly got killed instantly because I forgot that I logged out in the slums. I had to flag off in the sewers because all the exits (including elevators) were propblocked or biolocked with restricted access.

I made a new character because most of mine are just fucked in the slums, only to find I was now trapped in Triumph. I really don't get the thought process behind this event, who is it supposed to be fun for, exactly? You spawn in and get owned by zombies before the screen finishes loading.

The only actual reliable RP hub on the server is now turned into Sunrust ZS with an unlimited amount of zombies getting spawned right in front of you. If you didn't log out wearing armor, carrying a gun, and happen to be in a decent spot that isn't propblocked, you're just utterly fucked. What are all the players who have to survive in the slums due to BOL's or whatever else supposed to do right now? Guess they can go fuck themselves. What's there to experience? Clearly you're just not supposed to go to the slums at all anymore. It's just a lame trap for people who don't know what's going on/new players.

Maybe this was all some weird experiment to see how the city would thrive if the slums were off-limits. I'm sorry, but the city is boring as fuck right now and most people just don't enjoy being forced to that area of the map. Like @Kappatalist said, give people a reason to actually WANT to be in the city instead of just herding them there.

I'm sure there were good intentions behind this event, but I'm struggling to find out what they are. It all feels incredibly restrictive for players and not very well thought out. Not sure if the slum apartments being burned down for X amount of times now and being totally propblocked is part of this event, but I'm not touching that.

For the people that got to experience the struggle of attempting to battle their way out of the slums through coordination with a vort, melee weapon combat and baiting zombies into more favorable spots, it may have been fun, but here are my takes:

First of all - where the fuck did the zombies come from? Did the people running this event forget that there is a ladder? Multiple, infact, which need to be climbed in order to even reach the slums? How did the gonomes get on the fucking ceiling? How did a god damn antlion guard get there? Rule of cool doesn't work when it's not even cool but just completely nonsensical.

Second of all - whats with the zombies getting spawned right infront of our eyes? We clear a path through baiting zombies one by one but OOP theres 20 more two seconds later.

I was part of the group of people that got stranded within. It was fun, sure, but it was still borderline asinine how the zombies were set up and how there was a convenient antlion guard at the only alternative exit there is. Because of course there was, why wouldn't there be?

Overall, the event was very poorly thought out, seemed to just be slapped together, and somehow is outside of the capability of civil protection to handle despite the fact that the majority of the zombies currently present could easily be dispatched by an entire armed civil protection team.

Yeah, big L on this event.

Seems to be the common consensus is this event was an excuse to revive CityRP before the Short Story came out and kill off SlumsRP. I don't know about you guys and whilst I didn't participate in the event I don't believe this is the method the Staff Team should be taking to revive CityRP at the expense of Rebel/SlumRPers.

All in all. I predict this will blacklash very poorly for the Main Server four days before the SS even begins. I hope that the Staff Team realizes that to keep CityRP interesting, destroying the Slums is not the solution, but putting a band-aid on the symptom. This is the core issue of the server as I see it.

EDIT: I didn't play in the event. But I rate it 4/10 based off of information I am aware of currently.

actually quite enjoyed it, it felt very atmospheric and desperate. granted i logged back in to a point where i had a safe place to figure out a plan and make sure my inventory was clean first

props to whoever set up the xen thing/pipe jump, that felt very atmospheric

npcs were a bit unforgiving in terms of spawns but also didnt do too much damage so that was alright imo

my only concern is that maybe you jumped the gun a bit doing it so early in the week. try to give some attention to the stranded citizens in triumph/victory until the week break if possible, that would be my main piece of feedback

The simple truth of it is - as the staff team are now realising - RebelRP cannot sustain a server by its lonesome. In the short term it can, but long term they have even less to do than the city and that isn't good for anyone. The problem is that rebels - and slum dwellers - have no reason to come to the city and help make roleplay there, even if it benefits everyone if they did.

After all they have guns, gear, access to loot spawns, food and water. They can be entirely self sufficient without ever needing to come back to the city and the longer they stay there the more people will go there for roleplay and the worse the impact will be. V4 is only going to compound on this issue because the slums are even larger.

As sloppy as this event seemed they genuinely don't have much of a choice but to try and force the balance to shift back or the server will gradually die.

this post is incredibly one sided and out of the loop. are you saying rebels wanted this event because there's nothing to do? or are you saying there's more to do in the city because there definitely isn't. this "event" ended up propblocking half of everyone's flag-off points and containers, while relentlessly spamming zombies in an utterly unfun zombie survival gamemode way where nobody has guns cus its all locked in their containers, and if they did have their guns, cops would suddenly get brave and sweep the zombie infested indigent zone

this thread isnt about server balance, this thread is about numbskull event planning

I had fun, I got an excellent opportunity to introduce the slum dweller character I had in the freezer for a while, but now I have all my characters stuck in Victory I guess.
  • Biggest problem was people spawning right in the middle of NPCs, luckily I usually disconnect somewhere inside and away from sight, so I just got TPd straight to a safe rooftop, but most of the people were swarmed as soon as they reappeared in the middle of the park, and instead of being offered a TP or even being phys-gunned away, they just got warned after they flagged off as if that was the common sense solution.
Now my biggest concern is that for the rest of the week we're gonna be forced out of Indigent (and Triumph too?) and I didn't feel like anything was planned to happen in Victory to make use of the sudden influx of citizens. I just walked aimlessly for an hour after reaching the city.
  • What I would have probably done different:
  1. Since most slum dwellers would spawn in dangerous locations, the admin PSAs should have been used to give them a forewarning and offer them an immediate TP to a safe spawn zone in Indigent instead of immediately warning players who flagged off as if there was any bad faith in avoiding to spawn in the middle of a shitfest of zombies and fast headcrabs like I've seen yesterday.
  2. Next time staff should give advanced notice to the factions that are supposed to give the regular citizens some roleplay. Anything like "a bunch of half-starved refugees are going to flood into the city, feel free to prepare some roleplay for them". Politicians could have offered refugees some cheap populism, CWU could have done some simple workshifts to get as many people working as possible, CMU could set up a proper refugee camp or whatever. The possibilities were there, but no one took them, and I bet that in a few days we'll have loyalist regulars complaining that there's nothing to do.

Quick thoughts it was fun after killing zombies for 2 hours to get my friends out of slums then holdoung out in waltmart it was like a movie

I think you missed my point, because I wasn't saying either of these. I wasn't supporting the event either because this was probably the worst way the issue could have been tackled. I doubt the fact this event which blocked off the slums for basically everyone and made it hyper-dangerous coming off the heels of a thread complaining about the fact the slums has killed the city was a coincidence at all.

Cutting off the main side of the map keeping the server afloat right now so suddenly so poorly isn't going to make things better, and while I absolutely agree that the issue of the slums being the RP hub needs to change for the sake of the server its clear that this wasn't planned in advance much at all - any potential this genuinely could have had, as @afibon said, probably won't be utilised.

I don't blame people for being pissed about this lol, because it just gives them further incentive not to play if they have a rebel or slum dweller which only makes the current problem even worse.
