Post your horror stories from HL2 RP here

Heres mine;

A few years ago I decided I would try my hand at running a HL2 RP server (even though I had no idea how to even set it up). I ended up using clockwork as the framework and got a 15 slot server (I had planned to start off with a smaller size and increase it if needed).

I contacted a few people I knew that would be interested in helping out, only one of these people had any experience with lua, so I ended up having to rely on this person for all of the stuff regarding scripting or setting up the framework, I didn't really know the person all that well and should have seen the red flags when they were right in my face.

The person in question was named Verniy, he seemed like a normal person (despite having an anime profile pic) when I spoke to him in voice chat. After I gave him access to the server and he set things up, more red flags started to appear, the biggest of which was the character he played.

He played a vortigaunt named Gangut, seemed normal at a first glance, but he told me that this is a character he has re-used on multiple different servers. It got worse when he told me about the name.

He said the name Gangut was actually the name of a type of russian battleship, it seemed fine at first, but only later did he tell me his anime waifu was also named Gangut (it was from some show or game where the characters are anthropomorphized battleships), meaning he named his vortigaunt character after an anime character.

After he set everything up, all he did was try to make his character the center of the world, he would have grand-elder levels of power, able to teleport entire cargo freighters with ease, the rest of the people I had on the staff team just put up with it. Verniy eventually gave guns to a bunch of citizens to "start a resistance", the problem was that he gave guns to a a majority of the players on a 15 slot server, so it was pretty much just combine vs rebels after that.

The players he gave the guns to threatened to all leave if we took the guns away, meaning if we tried voiding the situation and taking their guns, we would lose pretty much the entire player base excluding the staff.

While I was offline Verniy allowed all the rebels to break into the nexus somehow, I rushed on to try to stop it, but it was too late, and if we fought them and killed off their characters we would lose all of the players, so I was forced to let it all run its course. Though afterwards the rebel players said that they had a ton of fun, though it was at the cost of all the union players.

Because the rebel players had pretty much done what they wanted, they all left, the rest of the staff gave up as well, leaving just me and Verniy, I gave it up shortly after, and was bombarded with constant discord calls by Verniy, because he wanted me to get back on the server to get people to join, after this I just ghosted him and eventually took the server down.

One of the reasons why I didn't remove him after I saw the first red flag was because he owned the clockwork key and had access to the server, though I eventually bought my own key and it pissed him off because he couldn't say he's the co-owner anymore

But the biggest reason why I didn't remove him was that I was stupid, and he constantly tried guilt tripping me into letting him stay. He constantly told me that the other members of the staff team (namely the ones that were vocally against Verniy) were just trying to screw with me and ruin the server, and I was dumb enough to believe it at the time.

Damn, that is kind of fucked up. So here, what kinda stuff do we post? Bad experiences or actual spooky and scary rp experiences

I played on Terranova and was an Aspiring CMU

The CMU lead on that server was very inactive so all we had to lead was our CA representative, and a CWU Lead who was very active

Well, the character who played CWU kept trying to force romantic interactions with all the femchars on the server

the first time he was successful was when he tried hitting up the CA representative, who was a femchar

turns out the CA rep took the ERP to dms and found out the CWU lead was Dr. Pepper

THEN, during the commotion, we found out that the CA rep was also a suspicious character nonce because the investigation showed the CA rep had been an alt the whole time

Anyway, thats how I got lolmoted into the simultaneous lead of both the CWU and CMU in one day

A long time ago on Shockcore Gaming,
I was an avid Rebel character during the 2014-15 period of its server life. Held a lot of sway in the slums, since at the time I was the largest Rebel leader at the time, in charge of at least ten uniformed rebels. We had planned to use a canon brainwashing device to turn captured Cops into sleeper agents in preparation for a uprising we had planned.

We got one, and tested the machine on a cop. Then turned him loose expecting him to open up the doors on the final assault. Unfortunately, a day later I came online to find that the brainwash machine was literally exploded. Relastically, there was always one or two of my men on server at any given time. So we knew that no one compromised our base location.

It was the vending machine on Industrial 17.

So later, my co lead shoots me a dm and says that the brainwash machine has been voided by the Headcop admins, which at the time were Tiddlywinks, and Diabeetus. But it appeared they forgot to let me know since I was receiving the info from my co lead.

Anyway, we expected the brainwashed cop to help us when we kicked off the uprising, while being a tiny bit confused about it.

When the uprising was scheduled to happen, my group took to the slums, giving every blue suit we found guns. Numbering at a total of 8 uniformed rebels and four pistol armed bluesuits.

We took to the streets in force for a assault on the primary nexus. While we were preparing, the server suddenly crashed. Later, I’d find out that the two admins who snubbed us before, took down the server conveniently right at the same time I was starting the uprising. Which left me a little tilted.

The next day, I came on to find my headquarters was completely destroyed. As if someone tipped off the cops. However, only me, my co lead, and three longtime developed rebel chars knew about the location. Which made me immediately suspicious.

When finally we went for a regularized raid on the checkpoint from the slums to the plaza, we were all suddenly ambushed by “DAGGER” units. Who used sniper rifles, and were untouchable with return fire, essentially super l33t soldier cops. Like they roleplayed that they were using stealth fields and were hidden in the rooftops. Who also closed off our escape route which was that little trash drop off in the checkpoint. Which was “welded” shut. When we checked on preliminary recon, that it was openable and couldn’t of been welded

We didn’t stand a fucking chance. I was the first to go down from massed sniper fire. And once I went down, the cop lead was next and promptly died. Then everyone else retreated, that was the death rattle of my group since after that. I chose to not ever lead any sort of serious rebel group again.

Fidel and Diabeetus used their admin sway to kill us all by exploiting their power there. Someone attempted to file a complaint, but it was snubbed by them on flimsy evidence. Last I heard, Fidel had his power removed and permabanned. And Diabeetus was found out to be a Pedophile. And that was it. Haven’t seen either of them since.

Dr. Pepper
One server I did play on (and managed in a senior position) back in the day in 2017 or what ever year it was, and it had him playing on the server.

He was supposed to be banned the moment we saw him playing on the server... but to my surprise, he wasn't. I started questioning around as to why he wasn't banned yet with active staff (to which he kept on getting unbanned when he was), to which many of the staff had, and quite literally, angrily replied to me that "we were allowing him to play on the server."

... Yes, you read that right. The server owner actively allowed Doctor Pepper on the server, and when I question about it - the reason was: "This is a chance for everyone to start fresh."

Not to mention someone else in the staff team also had his "sympathies" for the guy and he was also in a senior position. Needless to say, I haven't really talked about this up until now: but that's the moment I started my first, and very last staff rebellion. I tried everything in my power to explain to the owner that the decision was beyond ridiculousness. But moving on...

At that point in time, there was a whole group of people dedicated to hunting him and exposing him and what-ever. Here they arrived, immediately started causing some problems. The meme peaked when they named themselves the "Pepper Intelligence Agency" (ikr what a name lmao) on Discord and they came into our Community Discord. So after a good discussion with a couple of the guys from that group with some of the staff - we each named ourselves as counter-terrorism branches like "FBI, CIA, KGB" - for me I labelled myself as MI-6, and some of the other staff joined in.

I didn't want the server to die, I really wanted it to succeed but drastic measures had to be taken because we were being ignored. I gave a couple of the guys admin on off-hours and we planned an OP to just fuck with the guy until he left and record. Needless to say he was persistent and he would still continue to play. They just pretended to be part of the staff team but the reality was that we were secretly also getting players onboard with committing mass-destruction on the citizens - none of us cared if we got demoted, perma'd or what ever... that was until the boys managed to actually get Pepper properly exposed, and he HAD to be banned.

Players finally rejoiced, but then the massacre with loads of RPGs and M249s happened anyway, which caused a Judgement Waiver that lasted approximately up to an hour and a half. Server went down for a while and came back up, though the server wasn't so popular because of the decisions made by the highest managerial staff for that specific community.

TL;DR - Launched a staff rebellion because mister nonce got owner protection from the very community I was supposed to represent. Chaos ensued and server ended up dying and majority of playerbase leaving.

Are you guys scared that one day Willard might close? When I first joined nebulous, I never thought of it closing due to the mass amount of players there, but this year though... rip hl2rp for them.

And in regards to Dr Pepper, does he have some kind of mental illness? I know he's a pedo and all, but why hasn't he been put in jail or something?

Back in January this year, that was a very real situation that loomed over our heads, and that was the second time we faced that dreaded thought considering the fall of TeslaCloud back in 2018. We were in the worst possible moment in which an HL2RP Community could exist within; corrupt staff, poor map choice, faction disorganisation, non-functioning systems... list goes on, it was awful. But we worked at it still, despite the pressures. We managed to pull of a sort of "No Man's Sky", essentially.

All communities will die or close eventually, though it's good to remember that Neb is now something far more than just HL2RP where its focus lies on a much more challenging field that will be GTA RP and other projects they'll be interested in. I could say HL2RP is running its course - but I don't think it is, at least in its entirety. I think it's in for a strong revival given enough dedicative passion. Taking into consideration that it's heading in a direction away from City RP (as that is seen as the main hub for all future passive RP to transpire) to more private experiences like Short Stories, which will be the future of the gamemode until Valve decides to come out of hibernation again.

glowie parents and the chris-chan treatment of being locked in a room all day where the extent of his harm is on niche Garrys Mod servers

That fucking guy is like whack a mole he goes down then pops up somewhere else years later, He's like that fucking turtle master of disguise guy

way from City RP (as that is seen as the main hub for all future passive RP to transpire) to more private experiences like Short Stories, which will be the future of the gamemode until Valve decides to come out of hibernation again.
I think out of city/outlands style rp can work as a standalone thing and for passive aslong as there are urban areas. Say imagine we were to rip an urban section out of a city map like C17i or C24. And were to place it in an outland map such as Ineu valley for example being the most popular. If we move away from city rp it appears majority of the passive rper's who create the bulk of a servers blood. We would need a healthy balance, And Imo if we went down this road I feel it would be best that we tried to include a run-down urban section in an outlands majority map, So Imagine a small walled in city situated in a large outlands. The urban sector perhaps is maybe 1-2 city blocks. If we look at maps such as https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=575135767 for example. If you were to go into hammer and wall in the city portion and retro-fit it to be a livable/run down combine city you could still have the massive threats and adventures that wait in the outlands but with the excitement of characters all working together to try and take a shitty run-down city and turn it into something beautiful and new. In the city you'd have bombed out destroyed remnants of infrastructure from either the seven hour war or from a rebel bombing of some kind.
So it would resemble sort of a 1984 Oceania setting, All the while fighting the elements outside. With Outlands and out of city servers/rp the main thing to keep your population engaged seems to be needing events and if theres hubs to passive in such as reclaimed combine cities or newly established ones perhaps, That gives them one such venue.

This makes me depressed yet hopeful. I have so many memories of hl2rp. Friends, relationships, friendships. Seeing hl2rp die would be horrible. Then again, everybody gotta die someday. Memories, games and shit included.

Seems like in all these instances toxicity and bias were the main two elements that lead to each bad interaction, mainly on CW.

- Either the staff or the leads favored a faction at the expense of others, playing to win rather then for roleplay.
- Degenarcy corrupting and influencing others into one-sided server descisons (such as Powergaming a faction, godmodded characters, etc.)
- The owner or it's GM's taking direct control of the roleplay to godmod or to power up a faction at the expense of other factions.
- The majourity of players being reactionary, not doing anything pivital and only in it to S2K and have temporary fun and leaving when there's nothing left.

I still see this sort of attitude still lurk around here, as well as the old days of CW, I feel like Willard has improved but the lingering feeling I felt pre-hiatus still is there and the signs that destroyed most of these communities are present in Willard, Somewhat the first and fourth.

The issues overall boil down to all of us, the community, players and staff. If we don't learn from these mistakes we'll simply repeat them.
