Hyperloyalism, snitching

I'm making this report after an encounter I had with Civil Protection at very, very low-pop hours. I want to preface this by saying I pin no blame on anyone in specific, but the behavior itself. Hyperloyalism. Snitching when it in no way benefits you, solely because you wake up every morning and say "Hail Breen".

I had a cop character of mine snitched on recently, and I can't say what for certain pushed the player behind it (who will remain nameless unless they wish to add) to do it - whether it was for brownie points, or this terrible idea of loyalism. I also have some reasons to believe the person who snitched on my cop did it out of fear, which is reasonable given the hints that they might've been discovered otherwise. This got me thinking about the mindset of hyperloyalism, and this constant dogmatic snitching we've taken up to doing.

Tonight was different though. There was no gain, and the roleplay was rushed with no time to even read the actions that were being done. Tonight, at very, very low-pop hours I am arguing with @Labmann's character, Edward Urey. We trade insults, and eventually he says 'Well, you're a slave!' as some sort of argument. I shoot back by showing him I was not, and what did he do? He mingewalked away to a civil terminal and reported me to the cops while I was mid-typing, where I was not even allowed to make an action stopping his character. I think the roleplay and just walking away, even if a /me was done, is abysmal. It led to myself getting chased and shot by the cops, to which I had to blast them in defense, causing them to get into a hissy fit. I survived, and purposefully let the last man standing go so he could revive his friends (the cops didn't deserve that, even if they fired first).

I understand player agency is important, and characters should do what their mindset/goals will push them to do, but this constant snitch-snitch-snitch behavior is atrocious and leads to dogass S2K with zero reason. The cops had a system to prevent snitching, using the loyalist system, but it was never abided by. Now any report will result in some code 3 response with guns drawn because someone saw a window break.

Disincentivize snitching.

Inaction is conspiracy is a constantly reiterated message. To not report the witnessing of a crime (presumably the possession of a fire arm given your description) is itself a crime. This is perhaps an individual player problem with the way that it was handled, but it's fairly reinforced by the established dystopian norms regardless of how compelling it is.

In hindsight I made a mistake, and apologise. Though "hyperloyalism" and "Hail Breen" is not at all something that undergirded that action.

This is also the first ever instance my character has ever 'snitched', in his months upon months of existence, which makes this report all the more ironic that I'm being made the example of 'incessant snitching'. I am also, a victim of incessant snitching. But yes, I agree, and don't mean to make myself out to be a victim here. It was an error on my side, the way it was carried out wasn't correct. Poor form from me, I suppose I wasn't thinking.

And I see it prudent to add that I agree that snitching for its own sake is a problem. It's uncreative, does not lend to good storytelling, and most-all benefits poor, shallow roleplay and disincentives risk. I in no way support snitch-for-snitch-ism, have opposed it in the past, and will continue to oppose it. This was an isolated incident where I had a lapse in quality and was not thinking properly.

I accept the blame for this, and the consequences that occurred thereafter. Fine with any reasonable punishment for this incident if it comes my way. And, I will be diligent in future to prevent this from happening.

being in a cell for 2 months has desensitised edward urey to face-to-face human interaction!!!

Remove request devices and perhaps the terminal option, make them go up to Officers in person and then explain what they're reporting. Snitching, and the rules, is fine as it is. But the ability to summon Civil Protection at a whim is really a problem.

I've had this happen several times in the past, a while ago one of my characters punched a Civil Protection unit and a CWU member who had just had his throat slit and removed from surgery in the last ten minutes or so rose from his medical bed like dracula to immediately start shouting into his request device, before the Officer could even get out his own /me.

In fairness to him he didn't actually make the request immediately, and he wouldn't have been wrong for reporting it, but being able to do so from the position he was in took the agency away from those of us involved in the RP. What turned out to be a rather engaging scenario, would have turned into a simple case of CPs storming the building and gunning me down immediately as opposed to what did play out in the end.

I don't mind being reported for crimes, because aside from people intentionally involving themselves in rebel groups to report them (Which I'm fairly sure gets you banned now) if I'm being reported I've fucked up, I've told the wrong person the wrong thing or I've been seen doing something, and I haven't been careful enough to avoid it. But using a request device is just a shitty way to shut down any RP on the spot, without giving me any, or at least very little, chance to escape.

Remove request devices

Request devices should probably be removed. I've never once seen an RP scenario where someone could be stopped from using it.

Yet another W for Terminal 7 honestly. During a Loyalist Housing raid William Stoner's Request Device was stolen. Let that scene take on way more air and had a lot of affects that are still relevant to the trajectory of characters around today.

I'm convinced, down with Device.

Honestly i only ever used a request device once in a S2RP scenario, but I waited ample time to actually make the request itself, 3-4 /mes before ever "posting it". Still, yes it is a bit silly that all of the sudden someone can just call the cops out of nowhere, hence why i usually avoided using it at all unless it was some S2K slop (mostly to not kill the scenario immediately/ give the other person time to run away if they chose to).

Imo the problem with Request devices is you don't need to write a /me before using them so people just abuse the hell out of it.

Y'all... Just report people for powergaming if they instantly use a request device. This would be like removing guns because someone RDMed you.

i lost my gay husband, patrol-784, to hyperloyalist snitching

honestly yeah, request devices is something that should be removed in v3. having a device that can instantly get a bunch of cops to rush over to you is bad for rp and removes any sort of player agency because someone's just going to rat you out for 3 social credits

This isn't the problem, request devices just actively take away from the roleplay and I've never seen a situation in which using it has actually made for good RP

Request devices being added to the luxury permit could address this. Citizens and unions can still use terminals and it leaves snitching to proper loyalists.

Hi! I’m the one who snitched on his Cop Character, and I do want to take this time before my glorious shower-time to point out some of the IC and OOC reasons for the route I took. Firstly, the IC reasons;

My character went along with the initial plan for two reasons: he was morbidly curious, and he felt terrible for the YELLO involved. With that, the second the idea of doing something treasonous was mentioned, it struck a coord in him, but it also terrified him to know what the consequences could be. The same night, he had a very long-winded interaction with the Captain, like about 3-4 hours, where eventually he broke, knowing exactly what would happen to him when eventually the Captain would figure out his involvement.

Now, there were some OOC reasons as well, which I’ll admit are kind of sad. I really love the character i’ve built so far, and even though we’re turning the clock back soon, I want to enjoy playing him as long as I can. i’m incredibly new to the faction, and am unsure of what consequences come both IC and OOC with being involved in something like that. It looks bad on me as someone who JUST joined the faction to already fuck up THAT bad.

So at least with me, don’t worry about hyperloyalism / no real reason, because i genuinely spent irl hours debating what route to take.
