TBH I don't think they killed that many. Most of the Vortigaunts on Earth appeared after the end of the Nihilanth and the ones that did do the killing were mostly localized to the South-Western Part of the US and Northern Mexico.

In that case, I'd probably think Vorts are pretty cool, they have magic powers and live thousands of years. I probably wouldn't like talking to them though, they would end up making me feel stupid

I don't think so at all, Vortigaunts in many ways show a collective of understanding and kinship that in my opinion humanity should aspire for in some respects. I think they are fascinating, and not only because some things they can achieve with the harnessing of the Vortessence, but beyond as to what makes them Vortigaunts.

Although I think it'd be strange to find common grounds sometimes, or understand them on certain occasions.
